For each mechanism, we discuss how it works in nature, how it might work in cancers, and its implications for therapy.Nonthermal physical intervention technologies are able to reduce populations of foodborne pathogens on/in fresh produce. As highly perishable and living organisms, fresh produce is inherently sensitive to any physical or chemical treatment in terms of quality damage. The aims of the present review are to summarize current knowledge on non-thermal technologies (ionizing radiation, UV and pulsed light, ultrasound, high hydrostatic pressure, and cold plasma) with an emphasis on their impact on quality of fresh produce and to discuss advantages, disadvantages, and considerations for the commercialization of each technology. The impact of nonthermal physical technologies on fresh produce quality is related to pathogen inactivation mechanisms of each individual technology, and the nature and intensity of changes in quality due to the technologies depend on the treatment intensity/time and other processing conditions. Common symptoms of quality deterioration due to nonthermal processing include tissue softening, browning, and loss of nutrients. In general, there is a lack of systematic assessment, particularly sensory evaluations using taste panels of the product quality after treatments. For emerging technologies, such as cold plasma, more studies are necessary in order to assess quality changes during post-treatment storage at relevant temperatures. Quality of fresh produce must be carefully investigated to facilitate the commercialization of technologies.
Asthma is the most common chronic condition of childhood. Urban, minority children from families of lower socioeconomic status have disproportionately higher rates of asthma and worse outcomes. We investigated the association between the presence of asthma and asthma severity among American, urban, minority children and reported quality of life (QOL) of children and their families.

We performed a prospective, cross-sectional study comparing QOL of urban, minority elementary school-age children with and without asthma. A convenience sample of children was enrolled from the pediatric emergency department (ED) and a specialized asthma clinic, at a large urban children's hospital. We measured child and parent QOL using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Version 4 (PEDSQL4), and evaluated associations with asthma, parental educational attainment, and frequency of ED visits.

We enrolled 66 children, 76% were African American, and 61% were female. Overall child QOL was higher for those without asthma (
 = 0.017,
 = 0.59). Children with asthma also visited the ED almost twice as frequently (
[64] = -3.505,
 < 0.001,
 = 0.8), and parents of children with asthma reported a lower overall QOL (
 = 0.04,
 = 0.53) than those without asthma. Among children with asthma, a higher overall child QOL was associated with decreased asthma severity, more ED visits, and higher parental educational attainment.

The aim of this study was to examine the association between exposure to night work (intensity and length of exposure to night work) and blood pressure (BP), considering the impact of on-shift naps. A cross-sectional study was carried out at a hospital based on a questionnaire and measurement of BP. The outcomes were systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and casual hypertension (HTN), i.e., SBP > 140 mmHg, or DBP > 90 mmHg, or reporting a prescription of antihypertensive medication. The sample comprised 449 fixed 12 h night workers who were (unofficially) allowed to nap during the night shift for up to 3 h. Approximately 42% of the sample reported napping. Among non-nappers (but not among nappers), those exposed to more work nights (≥5/fortnight) showed a DBP that was 3.66 mmHg higher than that of the reference group. The likelihood of casual HTN was more than three-fold greater among non-nappers working more nights/fortnight than among those working fewer nights/fortnight. A similar tendency was observed in a subsample of workers who did not take antihypertensive medication. The results were less consistent regarding length of exposure to night work (in years). HSP27 inhibitor J2 nmr A possible explanation is that workers who usually take on-shift naps could experience suppression of the BP increase derived from the many nights worked, while the non-nappers did not experience this suppression. The results may be explained by the relationship between napping, melatonin secretion, and attenuation of circadian misalignment. Napping likely contributes to creating a "physiologically nocturnal environment" that tends to favor the circadian system and, therefore, health. Possible negative effects related to sleep inertia deserve attention. The findings encourage new studies on this topic to improve the management of night work at hospitals in regard to workers' health.Plasma surface modification is an effective method for changing material properties to control cell behavior on a surface. This study investigates the efficiency of a plasma polymerized 4,7,10-trioxa-1,13-tridecanediamine (ppTTDDA) film coated on a polystyrene (PS) Petri dish, which is a biocompatible surface with carbon- and oxygen-based chemical species. The adhesion, proliferation, and migration properties of bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) were profoundly enhanced in the ppTTDDA-coated PS Petri dishes without extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, when compared with the uncoated PS Petri dishes. These observations indicate that ppTTDDA-coated PS Petri dishes can directly interact with cells, regardless of cell adhesion molecules. The increased cell affinity was attributed to the high concentration of carboxyl group on the surface of the ppTTDDA film. Such a carboxyl surface showed an excellent ability to promote culturing of BAECs. Plasma surface modification techniques are effective in improving biocompatibility and provide a surface environment for cell culture.
