To do that, specific mortality from COVID-19 has been standardized for each Italian province and per age group (10 groups) ranging from 0 to 9 years to >90 years, based on the 2019 national population figures. The link between air pollutants and COVID-19 mortality among Italian provinces was studied implementing a linear regression model, whereas the wide set of variables were examined by means of LISA (Local Indicators of Spatial Autocorrelation), relating the spatial component of COVID-19 related data with a mix of environmental variables as explanatory variables. As results, in some provinces, namely the Western Po Valley provinces, the SMR (Standardized Mortality Ratio) is much higher than expected, and the presence of PM10 was independently associated with the case status. Furthermore, the results for LISA on SMR and PM10 demonstrate clusters of high-high values in the wide Metropolitan area of Milan and the Po Valley area respectively, with a certain level of overlap of the two distributions in the area strictly considered Milan. In conclusion, this research appears to find elements to confirm the existence of a link between pollution and the risk of death due to the disease, in particular, considering land take and air pollution, this latter referred to particulate (PM10). For this reason, we can reiterate the need to act in favour of policies aimed at reducing pollutants in the atmosphere, by means of speeding up the already existing plans and policies, targeting all sources of atmospheric pollution industries, home heating and traffic.Sludge drying reed beds (SDRBs), as a natural biological technology, have positive effects on surplus sludge treatment. However, few studies focus on the sludge leachate purification in the SDRBs regarding the wetland plant species and sludge loading rates. In this study, four SDRBs planted with two wetland plant species (Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia) were investigated for leachate purification under six sludge loading volumes and feeding frequencies (9L/3d, 6L/3d, 4L/d, 3L/d, 2.5L/d, and 2L/d). Results showed that the lowest Escherichia coli content of 630 number/mL was determined in the P. australis SDRBs, with 86.2-92.8% lower than those in the T. angustifolia controls. PBIT mouse However, similar removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH4+), total phosphorus (TP), and heavy metals were obtained in the SDRBs with both plant species. Moreover, the optimum sludge loading volume and feeding frequency of 3L/d was determined in the P. australis system, with pollutants (COD, TN, NH4+, and TP) mass removal efficiencies in the leachate being over 94.9%. In addition, the principal component analysis indicated that water loss and oxidation-reduction potential had positive influences on pollutant removal in the planted SDRBs. Overall, the best leachate removal efficiency was obtained in the P. australis SDRBs under the sludge loading volume and feeding frequency of 3L/d.The high energy consumption of high apparent electrical resistivity (AER) in sludge during the later stages of the electro-dewatering (EDW) process is a difficult problem; however, analysis of sludge AER may contribute to a reduction in energy consumption. In this study, the variations in the AER of activated sludge and potential mechanisms related to sludge properties were systematically examined. First, a sludge cake was divided into four horizontal layers, in order to investigate the sludge AER in each layer. Then, the effects of variations in water distribution, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), pH, metal ions, sludge conductivity, zeta potential, temperature, and sludge microstructure on the AER in each layer were explored. The results showed that the sludge AER began to increase from the bottom layers to the top layers when the moisture content (MC) was decreased to 60%. The formation of nonionic chemical systems and the gas barrier layer could increase the AER in the top layers, and the increase in sludge AER in the bottom layers was due to the decrease in MC and sludge conductivity. In addition, electrolyte release and electromigration had a significant effect on the sludge AER. This work identifies potential causes for the increase in AER, and provides a reference for solving problems related to high AER in sludge during the later stages of the EDW process.Wastewater based epidemiology is increasingly being considered as a potentially useful tool for early warning about eventual new COVID-19 outbreaks. In addition, some authors are investigating on the detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage sludge. However, no paper has been published up to date indicating how this virus could be quantified in soil samples. In view of that, we review available data searching for methodological approaches that could guide on the quantification of SARS-CoV-2 (and even other pathogenic microorganisms) in soils.
