The current paper uses longitudinal data on births in large U.S. cities from all six waves of the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study to explore the association between childhood experiences of housing hardships and delinquent behaviors in adolescence. About 60% of the sample experiences housing hardship at one or more waves. Inabilities to meet housing costs are common among the sample over 40% are unable to pay their full rent or mortgage payment. Results from multivariate regression and residualized change models indicate that children who experience any housing hardship are more likely to engage in delinquent behaviors than children who do not experience hardship. Exposure to higher average levels of hardship and more waves of hardship are both associated with increased delinquency. Childhood poverty does not moderate the relationship between housing hardship and delinquency suggesting that housing hardship is associated with delinquent behaviors for poor and non-poor children alike. This research builds on existing literature highlighting the importance of examining hardship as a measure of family wellbeing. It also suggests that preventing common housing-related hardships can be beneficial for youth behavioral outcomes.We have reported the design of the MRC-SPECT-II system based on the inverted-compound-eye (ICE) gamma camera to offer a > 1% detection efficiency while maintaining a sub-500 μm imaging resolution [1]. One of the key challenges of using the ICE camera for SPECT imaging is whether one could develop an accurate point response function (PRF), given its complex aperture design and low fractionation accuracy of 3D printing. In this work, we will discuss (I) a combined experimental and analytical approach for deriving the precise PRF, and (II) an experimental imaging study to demonstrate the feasibility of using the ICE-camera for acquiring high-quality SPECT images with a sub-500 μm resolution. In this study, blended gelatin-sodium alginate 3D printed scaffolds with different pore geometries were developed by altering the spatiotemporal alignment of even layered struts in the scaffolds. A significant difference in compression modulus and osteogenic expression due to the difference in spatiotemporal printing was demonstrated. A shift in pore geometry by at least 45° was critical for significant increase in osteogenic gene expression in MC3T3-E1 cells.The study of gene expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) is an effective approach to illuminate the functional roles of genetic variants. Computational methods have been developed for eQTL mapping using gene expression data from microarray or RNA-seq technology. Application of these methods for eQTL mapping in tumor tissues is problematic because tumor tissues are composed of both tumor and infiltrating normal cells (e.g. immune cells) and eQTL effects may vary between tumor and infiltrating normal cells. To address this challenge, we have developed a new method for eQTL mapping using RNA-seq data from tumor samples. Our method separately estimates the eQTL effects in tumor and infiltrating normal cells using both total expression and allele-specific expression (ASE). We demonstrate that our method controls type I error rate and has higher power than some alternative approaches. We applied our method to study RNA-seq data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and illustrated the similarities and differences of eQTL effects in tumor and normal cells.In this work, we present a computational fluid-structure interaction (FSI) study for a healthy patient-specific pulmonary arterial tree using the unified continuum and variational multiscale (VMS) formulation we previously developed. The unified framework is particularly well-suited for FSI, as the fluid and solid sub-problems are addressed in essentially the same manner and can thus be uniformly integrated in time with the generalized-α method. In addition, the VMS formulation provides a mechanism for large-eddy simulation in the fluid sub-problem and pressure stabilization in the solid sub-problem. The FSI problem is solved in a quasi-direct approach, in which the pressure and velocity in the unified continuum body are first solved, and the solid displacement is then obtained via a segregated algorithm and prescribed as a boundary condition for the mesh motion. Results of the pulmonary arterial FSI simulation are presented and compared against those of a rigid wall simulation.Although individuals vary in how optimistic they are about the future, one assumption that researchers make is that optimism is sensitive to changes in life events and circumstances. We examined how optimism and pessimism changed across the lifespan and in response to life events in three large panel studies (combined N = 74,886). In the American and Dutch samples, we found that optimism increased across younger adulthood, plateaued in midlife, and then decreased in older adulthood. In the German sample, there were inconsistent results with respect to age differences and mean level changes in optimism. Associations between life events and changes in optimism/pessimism were inconsistent across samples. We discuss our results in the context of life events and lifespan development.Multimorbidity is the presence of more than one chronic disease condition in an individual. Health-related, socioeconomic, cultural and environmental factors, as well as patient behaviour, all influence the outcomes of multimorbidity. Addressing these complex and often interacting biopsychosocial factors therefore requires a shift in treatment from a physical damage model towards person-centred integrated care with increased patient agency. Education influences behaviour and can be used to empower patients and their carers with greater agency, thus allowing greater responsibility for and control over the management of patient care. In this paper we reflect on our own learning as a community of health practitioners from different disciplines. Recognizing the increasing importance of patient agency in driving the evolution of health care, we describe the concept of a web-based personal digital health hub for integrated patient care. Informed by collaboration between patient, health and education communities, we share our early experience in the implementation of a health hub around a cohort of patients with hip fractures.
