Complete medical examinations were performed on 25 wild golden-crowned sifaka (Propithecus tattersalli) from northeastern Madagascar. Each animal received a complete physical examination and weight, body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate were documented. Blood samples were collected for packed cell volume, estimated total white blood cell count, serum biochemical profile, fat-soluble vitamin analysis, trace mineral analysis, and Toxoplasma gondii serology. All animals examined were adults and determined to be in good health and body condition. No ectoparasites were observed. Fecal samples were collected for endoparasite examination and bacterial culture; while no endoparasites were observed, fecal samples from two females cultured positive for Bacillus cereus. One male lemur had a positive antibody titer to Toxoplasma gondii immunoglobulin G. These baseline health data provide an important foundation for continued monitoring of this critically endangered species.Improvac® is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone vaccine developed to reduce "boar taint" in the meat of male domestic pig. The use of Improvac for contraception of zoo and free-living animals has been increasing in recent years. This study reports the use, efficacy, and side effects of Improvac on five male sea lions. Administration of two injections of 600 µg of Improvac (gonadotropin releasing factor analogue-protein conjugate) 4-5 wk apart were delivered to two Patagonian and three California sea lions to reduce testosterone-related aggression, anorexia, and lethargy that occur during the breeding season. Behavior and physical changes were recorded for all individuals, and blood samples were taken from one Patagonian sea lion to measure plasma testosterone concentrations over time. Observations revealed a descension of the testes into the scrotum, orchitis, lameness, anorexia, and lethargy in all individuals for the first 3-5 d after the first administration of the vaccine. Plasma testosterone concentrations rose after the first dose of the vaccine and remained elevated for 1 mo, decreasing after the second injection to undetectable levels. Improvac administration can cause a peak of testosterone and breeding behavior just after the first inoculation, as previously described in swine and elephants, but has not been documented in pinnipeds. BAY-985 IKK inhibitor None of the treated animals in this study showed breeding behaviors during their normal breeding season (July-September).Fifty-three free-ranging moose (Alces americanus) cows were darted from a helicopter with 3-4 ml of a premix combination of butorphanol (27.3 mg/ml), azaperone (9.1 mg/ml), and medetomidine (10.9 mg/ml; BAM), equivalent to estimated dosages of butorphanol 0.26 ± 0.08 (mean ± SD) mg/kg, azaperone 0.09 ± 0.03 mg/kg, and medetomidine 0.11 ± 0.03 mg/kg. After a mean chase time (from sighting to darting) of 6.1 ± 5.5 min, the mean induction time (from darting to recumbency) was 8.3 ± 2.6 min. This combination provided a safe and reliable sedation for minor procedures that lasted 30-60 min. Heart rate (50.4 ± 7.0 beats/min), respiratory rate (21.3 ± 11.1 breaths/minute), ETCO2 via nasal canula (43.2 ± 7.0 mmHg), and rectal temperature (38.5°C ± 0.7°C) mostly remained at expected values for wild cervid and bovid species anesthetized with this drug combination. SpO2 (90.0% ± 3.7%) was suggestive of moderate hypoxemia despite intranasal oxygen supplementation (1 L per 100 kg/min). The recovery time to standing was 6.7 ± 3.8 min after reversal with IM naltrexone (3 mg/mg butorphanol) and atipamezole (5 mg/mg medetomidine). Despite a larger volume to inject, this protocol offers an alternative to highly potent opioids, and should be considered for practical or staff safety reasons. On the basis of the results of this study, the use of 4 ml of BAM is considered a safe and effective protocol for immobilization of cow moose under comparable settings. This study investigated the efficacy of isoflurane in Madagascar hissing cockroaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa). Cockroaches (n = 12) were placed in a 2-L anesthesia chamber with isoflurane initiated at 5% at 2 L/m. Movement of antennae, mandibles, and legs and righting reflex were assessed, with full induction achieved when all responses had ceased for 2 m. Cockroach movement became ataxic on average (±SD) 3.5 ± 0.9 m after isoflurane treatment, and induction occurred on average 18.7 ± 4.4 m after treatment. Loss of righting reflex was the most consistent indication of full induction. Cockroaches fully recovered on average 16.2 ± 5.6 m after removal of isoflurane inhalant. Induction was uneventful, and no mortality or obvious morbidity was observed in treated cockroaches up to 30 d posttreatment. The authors conclude that the use of inhalant isoflurane is both safe and effective for anesthesia of Madagascar hissing cockroaches.Spotted turtles (Clemmys guttata) are an endangered species and are commonly encountered in the pet trade and in many zoological collections across the United States, yet peer-reviewed published reference intervals (RI) for common clinicopathologic tests are unavailable for this species. The objectives of this study were to calculate partial RI for routine hematology, biochemistry, and electrophoretic analyses, as well as to perform an initial comparison of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) in this species. A single blood sample was obtained from a single collection of 32 apparently healthy captive spotted turtles weighing at least 100 g and was submitted for standard hematologic and biochemistry analyses, as well as electrophoresis via CZE and AGE methods. Partial RI were calculated for corresponding analytes for each type of testing. While CZE and AGE protein fractions were found to have good correlation, some significant differences were observed, reinforcing that RI should be reported with the specific method used for their determination. The spotted turtle electrophoretograms were distinctly different from those previously reported from turtles in the same taxonomic family, including differences in the number and relative prominence of protein fractions.
