Acute kidney injury (AKI) in preterm infants is associated with prolonged hospitalization and high mortality. Diuretic therapy has been used to enhance urine output in preterm infants with AKI. Treatment with diuretics, prescription patterns, and relationship with length of stay (LOS), mechanical ventilation (MV), and mortality in preterm infants who also had AKI have not been fully evaluated.
This multicenter retrospective study used the Pediatric Hospital Information System database. We included 2121 preterm infants with AKI diagnosis from 46 hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) born <37 weeks gestational age (GA). Treatment with diuretics, practice patterns across 46 NICUs in the USA, and associated outcomes including LOS, MV, and mortality were evaluated.
Seventy-six percent of infants received at least one dose of diuretics (median treatment 18 days). Diuretic prescription varied significantly across hospitals and ranged from 42 to 96%. Diuretics were used more frequently in infants winderlying severe illness in these infants and not the cause of more severe illness. Prospective studies are needed to best determine patient safety and outcomes with diuretic treatment in preterm infants with AKI. A higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available as Supplementary information.Anaerobic digestion is a mature technology; however, the mechanism of cell proliferation during starvation has not yet been clarified. In this study, a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) treating food waste was exposed to deliberate starvation for 12 days. The cell density and the variability of digestate characteristics during starvation were monitored. Starvation increased cell density from 2.8 × 1010 to 7.9 × 1010 cells mL-1 within 2 days and reduced the residual substrate. This increase in cell density was suggested owing to a switch of the anaerobic digester microorganisms' substrate preference to the complex fractions because the easily digestible fractions were exhausted. The prolonged starvation of more than approximately 3-6 days induced an increase in the free ammonia concentration to an inhibitive level of more than 0.10 g-N L-1 for anaerobic digestion microorganisms due to the excessive ammonification of residual nitrogen, thereby resulting in a drastic decrease in cell density. Our results demonstrated that a deliberate starvation operation in an appropriate timeframe applied to a CSTR treating food waste is beneficial to proliferate cells and, at the same time, reduce residual substrate.
To investigate the relationship of ocular blood flow (via arteriovenous passage time, AVP) and contrast sensitivity (CS) in healthy as well as normal tension glaucoma (NTG) subjects.
Mono-center comparative prospective trial METHODS Twenty-five NTG patients without medication and 25 healthy test participants were recruited. AVP as a measure of retinal blood flow was recorded via fluorescein angiography after CS measurement using digital image analysis. Association of AVP and CS at 4 spatial frequencies (3, 6, 12, and 18 cycles per degree, cpd) was explored with correlation analysis.
Significant differences regarding AVP, visual field defect, intraocular pressure, and CS measurement were recorded in-between the control group and NTG patients. In NTG patients, AVP was significantly correlated to CS at all investigated cpd (3cpd r = - 0.432, p< 0.03; 6cpd r = - 0.629, p< 0.0005; 12cpd r = - 0.535, p< 0.005; and 18cpd r = - 0.58, p< 0.001), whereas no significant correlations were found in the control group. Visual acuity was significantly correlated to CS at 6, 12, and 18cpd in NTG patients (r = - 0.68, p< 0.002; r = - 0.54, p< .02, and r = - 0.88, p< 0.0001 respectively), however not in healthy control patients. Age, visual field defect MD, and PSD were not significantly correlated to CS in in the NTG group. MD and PSD were significantly correlated to CS at 3cpd in healthy eyes (r = 0.55, p< 0.02; r = - 0.47, p< 0.03).
Retinal blood flow alterations show a relationship with contrast sensitivity loss in NTG patients. This might reflect a disease-related link between retinal blood flow and visual function. This association was not recorded in healthy volunteers.

Intron retention is a stage-specific mechanism of functional attenuation of a subset of co-regulated, functionally related genes during early stages of pollen development. Sivelestat mouse To improve our understanding of the gene regulatory mechanisms that drive developmental processes, we performed a genome-wide study of alternative splicing and isoform switching during five key stages of pollen development in field mustard, Brassica rapa. Surprisingly, for several hundred genes (12.3% of the genes analysed), isoform switching results in stage-specific expression of intron-retaining transcripts at the meiotic stage of pollen development. In such cases, we report temporally regulated switching between expression of a canonical, translatable isoform and an intron-retaining transcript that is predicted to produce a truncated and presumably inactive protein. The results suggest a new pervasive mechanism underlying modulation of protein levels in a plant developmental program. The effect is not based on gene expression inductio, linked to alternative splicing regulation, may contribute to the intron retention observed.
For perennial inhalant allergens such as house dust mite (HDM), the German guideline on allergen-specific immunotherapy explicitly recommends provocation testing. This procedure is time-consuming, expensive, and potentially dangerous for the patient. Recently it has been discussed whether provocation tests are really necessary for diagnosing allergy to Dermatophagoides species. Thus, our study aimed to analyze the concordance between nasal provocation tests with Dermatophagoides species and anamnestic data.
We retrospectively analyzed the concordance between patients' histories including self-reported symptom scores and the results of provocation testing in 471 individuals with proven sensitization to Dermatophagoides species.
