To prevent airway obstruction and recurrence, surgery is considered an appropriate option in cases of localized RDD arising on the upper respiratory tract. We report an extremely rare case of extranodal RDD without lymphadenopathy in the BOT, and provide a detailed discussion of its clinical and histopathologic features and treatment with a brief review of the relevant literature.Experimental studies indicate that 3D crystalline metal nanoclusters (NCs) intercalated under the surface of graphite have flat-topped equilibrated shapes. We characterize the shapes of these facetted NCs sandwiched between a blanketing graphene layer and the underlying graphite substrate. Specifically, we focus on the cases of fcc Cu and hcp Fe NCs. Calculated shapes of fcc Cu and hcp Fe NCs are consistent with the hexagonal footprints observed in scanning tunneling microscopy studies.The purpose of this study was investigate whether replacing or discontinuing drugs that are inhibitors or substrates of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) may improve the clinical course of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). A retrospective observational study included 43 patients with active CSC. Twenty seven patients (32 eyes, group 1) were using drugs that act as substrates or inhibitors of CYP3A4. In 25 of these 27 patients, treatments including steroids, calcium channel blockers, anticoagulants, statins, beta-adrenolytics, angiotensin receptor antagonists, antidepressants, muscarinic receptor antagonists, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, and others were discontinued or replaced with medications not affecting CYP3A4. Sixteen patients (19 eyes, group 2) not using any medication that affects CYP3A4, were given eplerenone, rifampicin, or laser treatment. Main outcomes measures were assessed by functional and anatomical images obtained using multimodal imaging techniques. The average follow-up time was 12 ed in 1 eye. We concluded that patients with CSC should not take substrates or inhibitors of CYP3A4. These drugs should be replaced with alternatives that act through other metabolic pathways.Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease in the world. It is characterized by recurrent eczematous skin lesions, fluctuating course and chronic pruritus. Increasing evidence suggest that AD is more common in adults than previously thought. The disease is characterized by an impaired skin barrier, aberrant Th2-type cytokine production and intensive pruritus. Epithelial keratinocytes constitute the first physical, chemical and immunological barrier, classified as a part of the innate defense system. These keratinocytes secrete various factors, e.g. alarmins such as thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and interleukin 25 (IL-25). Serum levels of substance P (SP) have been reported to be increased in patients with AD and correlated with itch intensity. Several previous studies reported a positive association between AD severity and house dust mites (HDM) sensitization. The aim of the study was to analyze IL-25, TSLP and SP concentrations in blood serum of adult patients with severe AD, depending on the degree of allergy to HDM. There were 31 adult AD patients enrolled into the study and a control group that consisted of 20 healthy subjects. AD was diagnosed on the basis of Hanifin and Rajka criteria. SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) and visual analogue (VAS) scores were used to assess the intensity of pruritus and blood content of specific IgE to HDM, as well as TSLP, IL-25 cytokines and SP was measured. Our study presents the evidence that IL-25 serum concentration is increased in patients with atopic dermatitis and this cytokine plays an important role in pathogenesis of this disease. HDM could stimulate the release of IL-25 which aggravates the disease severity. Our results corroborate previous findings on the role of TSLP in atopic dermatitis.Na,K-ATPase is the main system effectively excluding the superfluous sodium out of the cells on the expense of energy derived from hydrolysis of ATP. In brain 3 different isoforms of the catalytic α-subunit are known. The present study was focused to energy utilization and ability to bind sodium by the Na,K-ATPase as well as expression of all 3 isoforms of the catalytic α-subunit concerning its sex specificity in two selected regions of the brain, in cortex and in cerebellum of rats. Western blot analysis showed higher expression of all 3 catalytic α-subunits of Na,K-ATPase in cerebellum when compared to cortex which was not followed by higher activity. On contrary the total activity of the enzyme was lower in cerebellum comparing with cortex in females with no significant localization dependent differences of activities in males. Concerning sex dependence only the expression of α3 isoform was higher in cortex of male rats with no differences in the levels of α1 and α2 isoforms. However, the total activity of Na,K-ATPase in cortex was similar in male and female groups. On the other hand in cerebellum of females the total activity of Na,K-ATPase was significantly lower as compared with males. The obtained data indicate localization and sex dependent variations in maintenance of sodium homeostasis in the brain.The complement cascade is a part of innate immune system that responds rapidly to defend the host against invading microorganisms and complete the action of immune cells. The activation of the complement system leads to increased inflammatory response, fibrosis of tubulointestinal tissue and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The purpose of this study was to determine whether the type of renal replacement therapy has an effect on activation of the complement system. The study included 79 patients with CKD stages 4 - 5 according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines on conservative treatment (CKD4-5) (n = 28), on peritoneal dialysis (PD) (n = 21) and undergoing chronic haemodialysis (HD) (n = 30). The concentrations of complement components C3a, C5a and C5b-9 were determined in plasma using the ELISA method.
