A Class B CDL can open up many opportunities for trucking. It allows you to drive large vehicles, including straight buses and trucks. You can also tow a trailer when it's part of the vehicle category that is listed in the registration certificate for the vehicle.

The requirements for training and testing, job opportunities and endorsements are different among different CDL classes. So which is right for you?

What is a B+ Category license?

Category B+ is a type of driving license that allows you to drive with a trailer or semi-trailer. The trailer and vehicle must have a maximum authorized mass (MAM1) that does not exceed 3,500kg and the driver must be at minimum 18 years old to be eligible for this license. Category B+ is a fantastic alternative for those who want to be able to drive larger vehicles, but do not wish to take the more demanding Class A CDL test.

State-specific requirements vary and include a noncommercial driver's license as well as passing a medical examination. You may have to pass a written test and take the safety or driving class. You may need to be 21 years old in some states to get a Class B CDL. You should check the requirements for your state.

Drivers who passed their car test before the 1st of January 1997 and possess an e-license of category B can drive a motorcar with a trailer as long the MAM1 (the total weight of the vehicle and the trailer) is not greater than 3,500kg. However they won't be able to drive a vehicle with a trailer that falls under subcategory C1+E or D1+E and must pass the appropriate driving tests to upgrade their licence to allow them to do so.

In a few EEA Member States, drivers who have completed the category B driving test are not required to take the category BE driving test and are able to therefore tow trailers with a maximum authorised mass of up to 12,000kg in their category B licence. This exception is documented by an entry on the registration certificate of the vehicle.

The requirements to obtain a class B CDL differ by state however, the most common requirements are an excellent driving record and passing a medical examination.
