If you're interested in becoming truck driver, you'll need a commercial drivers license (CDL). There are various kinds of CDLs that permit you to drive certain types of vehicles.
Class B is the most popular kind of CDL. It allows you to drive cars that weigh at least 26,001 pounds, and to tow trailers that can accommodate up to 10,000 pounds. Drivers can also earn endorsements to enhance their capabilities.
What is a Class B+ License?
A Class B+ license allows you to drive larger trailers and vehicles than the standard car licence (category b). This is because category B+ licence holders have been through an additional testing process and have been "given" the B+E license with the highest towing limit. The towing limit you are allowed to have is determined by the date your B+E licence was issued by the government. Check out the following section under "Licence towing limits".
A Category B+ driving license is similar to a Commercial Driver's License, or CDL. The difference is that a class A CDL permits you to operate multiple types of tractor trailers and trucks and tractor trailers, while a Class B CDL will only let you drive large single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or more and a towed cargo vehicle which weighs less than 10,000 pounds. This kind of license is ideal for those who wish to find an entry-level job in the trucking business, but aren't yet old enough to get a Class A CDL.
It is worth considering this option if your intention is to relocate to the UK and work as trucker. The British government has altered the procedure for issuance of the category B+ license as of January 1, 2019. You should go to the gov.uk website for more information. The changes mean that it is becoming more difficult to legally get a category B+ licence, however you'll still be able to pull your trailer to the maximum limit provided you pass your B+E exam before the 19th of January, 2021. After this date, you will only be permitted to tow your trailer up to 3,500kg.
What are the requirements for a Class B+ licence?
To get a class B+ license, you need to meet the requirements for your state. These requirements differ by state however, they typically include an uncommercial driver's license as well as meeting your state's age requirement. You may need to pass a physical examination and an alcohol test. You may also be required to pass an oral test and an exam for driving.
If you have an 'category B' licence with code 96 or BE, you are permitted to drive a trailer or vehicle combination that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM (the maximum permitted mass of the combination vehicle and trailer). Check the MAM of your car and your trailer by looking at Section 5 "Classification" on your registration certificate for your vehicle. If you're in possession of a category B license without code 96 or BE, you may only transport a trailer of up to 750kg MAM.
Towing limits for drivers who passed an exam for category B+E prior to 19th January 2013 For UK licence holders, the maximum weight of a trailer that can be driven on the category B or BE licence is limited to 3,500kg MAM and the shared MAM of the trailer and the car cannot exceed 7,000kg. The only exception is if the vehicle and trailer are registered in Norway or another EEA member state, and the vehicles are specifically exempt by an amendment to the vehicle registration certificate that is accompanied by an entry on the driving licence information page or by the category B+E licence certificate (which is available from the DVLA).
You are not able to obtain a Category B+ permit without passing an examination for a medium-sized truck with trailers (category C1+E). This includes passenger vans as well as small HAZMAT vehicles and HAZMAT vehicles that have the necessary equipment for transporting hazardous materials. Visit your local DVLA or view the information about driving licences on the DVLA site to get more details. You may also be able to take practical driver training to prepare you for the test. This could be through an approved driver training school or privately undertaken by you.
What is the cost to get a Class B+ license?
A Class B+ license is a great option for anyone who wants to work in the trucking industry. However, it's important to keep in mind that training programs can amount to a substantial amount of money. Additionally, there are costs for testing and licenses, which differ from state to state. To minimize the financial burden, choose to attend a CDL school that provides financial aid or tuition assistance for their students.
You can also reduce costs by completing an ELDT online course before you begin your training. This will help you spend less time in a trucking school. This could also reduce the cost of lodging near a training center and help prevent new drivers from incurring additional expenses. For example, at C1 Truck Driver Training, the ELDT course is part of the program's fees and can be completed online prior to arriving and thereby allowing students to skip a week of classroom instruction.
A Class B+ is a great opportunity to get into the industry and gain valuable experience before attempting to apply for full-time positions. However, it's important to keep in mind that the vehicle has to be a single vehicle with a GVWR greater than 26,001 pounds and cannot be attached to a trailer. The handling of these vehicles is similar to automobiles, making it easy for those who hold a Category B driving licence to learn how to operate them. These vehicles are a great choice for those who prefer spending their time at home, rather than out on the roads.
Where can I get a Class B+ license?
You can obtain the class B+ license from your local DMV. If you're looking to purchase an RV that is advertised as class B+, you can check online with the DMV to determine the type of vehicle will be registering (i.e. Class A, Class C or Class B). The increased weight of the RV may require additional documents. You will need to provide proof of your financial capability to pay EUR 75,000 as a security.
