Why Buy a Category B+ Driving License?
If you need to drive a car and trailer that weighs over 26,000 pounds, you will require a class B licence. It is possible to add an endorsement to the CDL class you already have by taking a new knowledge and skills test.
A successful passing of a test in category C1+E can upgrade your licence to include full B+E eligibility. (Subject to the weight limit that applies to your B licence.) This is only applicable to UK drivers.
Passenger Endorsements
This endorsement is required if you plan to operate a vehicle that has 16 or more seats (including the driver) in order to transport passengers. You must pass the P written test and the road skills test for passengers to obtain this CDL endorsement. School bus drivers need an additional CDL endorsement and must undergo an FBI background investigation.
The Class B endorsement with a passenger endorsement permits the operation of vehicles that have a maximum GVWR of 26001 pounds, as long as the towed vehicle is not over 10,000 pounds. Commonly, these vehicles include city tour, school, and city buses. This class of CDL is typically used by professional bus drivers.
This endorsement is not required by drivers working for a company that does not transport property or people such as Realtors plumbers, plumbers, or meter readers. However, your employer could require you to obtain this endorsement to satisfy security or insurance requirements. The regular (Class D) Driver License with Passenger (F) Endorsement is added to Commercial Driver's License If your job involves providing taxi service, shuttle bus service or delivery services for flowers or pizza, couriers, or an ambulance driver. Any CDL Classification can have a For-Hire endorsement added. The code for endorsement is located on the front of your license, below the expiration date, and next to the letter "E".
Endorsements for Hazardous Materials
The Hazardous Materials endorsement demonstrates to employers that you're qualified to transport certain types freight. This specialized credential can boost your career prospects and help you land higher-paying driving jobs, particularly in the trucking business. It requires a higher level of safety awareness that goes beyond regular rules of the road to include handling passengers, managing onboard emergencies, and leading evacuation procedures.
You will have to take a written test on hazardous materials and pass an extensive background check conducted by the Transportation Security Administration. This is because these materials are explosive, corrosive, or toxic, so only qualified individuals are able to handle these items. This endorsement is required for truck drivers who transport chemicals and liquid gas as well as construction site workers who bring materials to their job sites.
You may also need an P (passenger) CDL endorsement to operate vehicles that transport passengers, like city and tour buses. School bus drivers need an additional S (school bus) endorsement to operate these vehicles. You can also add a tanker or N (tank vehicle) CDL endorsement to your driving license to transport the resources in liquid and gaseous forms, like oil and gas, dairy and beverage waste management, as well as agriculture. Certain companies, like Schneider offers a combinations of HazMat and tanker (X) endorsements that allow you to haul both types of freight without the requirement for a separate endorsement for either.
Whether or not you need additional endorsements to operate certain commercial vehicles will depend on the specific requirements of the company you are applying to work for. Continuing is important to do your research about the endorsements your potential employer would prefer or needs. This will allow you to spend your time and money in a responsible manner. This will help you determine what qualifications you need to acquire before beginning your journey as a driver and minimize the risk of spending money on unnecessary endorsements. Many companies reimburse drivers for the costs associated with obtaining CDL endorsements. This is the ideal way to begin your career in driving.
Combination Endorsements
The right endorsements give drivers access to vehicles they wouldn't otherwise be able to operate. They can broaden their options and become the most sought-after resource for job opportunities. Schneider suggests that drivers speak to industry professionals and career counselors to be aware of the types of endorsements that are most beneficial for their preferred career path.
The T combination endorsement permits, for instance, CDL Class B and A license holders to drive multiple trailers, including double and triple ones. This requires advanced driving and an understanding of how trailers move in relation to one the other. They are more at chance of being jackknifed or turning as compared to a single-trailer vehicle. Additionally, the X endorsement grants Class A and B CDL holders the ability to haul HazMat freight through a tanker truck.
Trailer Endorsements
Those who transport passengers for a living need to be able to have their Regular (Class D) driver license augmented with the For-Hire (F) endorsement. Taxi drivers shuttle service operators, couriers delivery services (flowers or pizza) and ambulance drivers are all examples of drivers who require this endorsement. Some employees who are paid on commission or for their own business and don't transport people or property in the course of their work (such as plumbers or meter readers, Realtors) might also require the For-Hire Endorsement.
The "T" endorsement permits CDL holders to operate vehicles with triple or double trailers. Schneider does not reimburse drivers who have this endorsement. The "X" endorsement allows holders of Class A and B CDL to transport HazMat on tankers. This combination of endorsements could be called a "combo", or an "all dangers" endorsement.
