In Turkey, primary care staffs have observed an increased rate of vaccination refusal in recent years. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of vaccination refusal and hesitancy in Turkey, in addition to the demographic features and underlying reasons. The present descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in İstanbul and Tekirdağ, two big Turkish cities that are exposed to widespread internal migration. To reflect Turkey's demographic structure, 1004 participants were selected using cluster sampling based on birthplace, age, and level of education, from all individuals who attended family medicine outpatient clinics at Namık Kemal University and Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital. A face-to-face questionnaire method was used. Data show that this decline was mainly the result of the increasing rate of vaccine rejection and hesitation, for which the most important reason was found to be distrust of vaccine companies. It can be concluded that individuals who display vaccine refusal and hesitation are mostly born in the developed geographical regions of Turkey and have high income and educational levels. According to these results, we anticipate that vaccination rates may fall in Turkey in the coming years.Purpose Age-related macular degeneration leads to retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell death and loss of central vision. In vivo studies have shown that the RPE layer has an innate, but limited, ability to repopulate atrophic areas. We aimed to establish a semiautomated, in vitro, wound healing assay workflow for targeted screening of compounds able to influence RPE wound healing. Methods The ARPE-19 phenotype was evaluated using bright-field microscopy, immunocytochemistry, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. selleck compound ARPE-19 monolayers were simultaneously scratched in a 96-well format and treated with Hoechst-33342 and an array of compounds. Initial wound dimensions and wound healing were subsequently evaluated using the EVOS FL Auto 2.0 imaging platform combined with automated image analyses. Results Long-term cultured ARPE-19 cells displayed a more in vivo RPE-like phenotype compared with recently seeded or short-term cultured cells. No statistical difference of initial scratch width was observed between short-term and long-term cultured cells, but more wells were excluded from analyses in total in the latter case due to scratch width, scratch smoothness, and imaging errors. Furthermore, the previous time spent in continuous culture had an effect on the observation of an altered wound healing response to different treatment conditions. Conclusions We have established a semiautomated, 96-well format, in vitro wound healing assay with a reproducible workflow. This would enable screening of a significant number of compounds and greatly advances the potential of identifying novel therapeutics that may enhance the innate ability of RPE cells to repopulate atrophic areas.Purpose To investigate the feasibility of retroperitoneal laparoscopic ipsilateral nephrectomy of a benign nonfunctional kidney after percutaneous nephrostomy, and to compare this method with open surgery. Materials and Methods Data from 70 patients who underwent simple nephrectomy from January 2014 to October 2018 at three large centers were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent percutaneous nephrostomy because of renal or ureteral calculi with severe hydronephrosis or pyonephrosis. Simple nephrectomy was performed via retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery (retroperitoneal laparoscopic group; n = 33) or open surgery (open group; n = 37). The retroperitoneal laparoscopic and open groups were compared regarding preoperative variables (age, sex, location of surgery, hypertension, diabetes, BMI, preoperative serum creatinine level, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade, fistula duration, fistula size, number of fistulae, and urinary tract infection), and perioperative variables (operation tg time (P = .002), gastrointestinal function recovery time (P less then .001), duration of bedrest (P less then .001), and duration of postoperative hospitalization (P less then .001), and lesser postoperative hemoglobin decline (P = .035) compared with the open group. Conclusions Retroperitoneal laparoscopic ipsilateral nephrectomy is feasible for a benign nonfunctional kidney after percutaneous nephrostomy. The surgical method should be selected based on the surgeon's experience and the specific situation of the patient.Hip abductor deficiency is most commonly encountered in the context of degeneration of the hip, and techniques for reconstruction pioneered by arthroplasty surgeons. We adopted a local muscle transfer technique utilizing the anterior half of the gluteus maximus for abductor reconstruction following soft tissue tumour excision in a young female patient. The patient of concern had a solitary fibrous tumour located between the right gluteus medius and minimus detected as an incidental finding. Marginal excision of the mass resulted in removal of the gluteus medius. The anterior half of the gluteus maximus was transferred and attached to the decorticated lateral greater trochanter by means of suture anchors and transosseous sutures. The patient initially demonstrated a Trendelenburg gait and limited abduction against gravity. By 1-year post-operation, there was return of normal gait and recovery of hip abductor power. This is the first report of anterior gluteus maximus transfer being successfully applied for soft tissue reconstruction around the hip subsequent to tumour excision.Literature in the past 5 years has demonstrated that veterinary students globally are experiencing poor mental health. This has detrimental consequences for their emotional well-being and physical health, as well as implications for their future careers. Considering this issue, a systematic review was devised to investigate what interventions were being used, and what effect they had, in veterinary students. The review process involved a search of five databases, from which 161 records were retrieved. Following this, the screening process revealed seven articles eligible for appraisal. These studies investigated seven different interventions, six being cohort-level workshops/courses and one being a collation of several individual strategies. All seven studies reported that the interventions were effective to some degree in improving the mental health of their participants. However, the lack of repeat interventions and control groups limited the external validity of each intervention. A comparison to the research in medical students is briefly discussed.
