This study aimed to explore the effects of glutamine on hypermetabolic reactions in burned rats and its underlying mechanism.

Fifty-five Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups, namely, the control (C), burned (B), and burned+glutamine (B+G) groups. Rats in the glutamine treatment group were supplemented with 1 g glutamine per kg body weight. Changes in body weight and resting energy expenditure in all groups were observed daily. Blood glucose and glucose tolerance level were measured on days 1, 3, 7, 10 and 14 after burn injury. On days 7 and 14 after injury, the rats were sacrificed, and the weight and protein content of the skeletal muscle were measured. Moreover, the level of glutamine, inflammatory mediator, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), glutathione, and the activity of glutamine metabolic enzymes were measured.

The hypermetabolic reaction after burn injury was significantly inhibited by glutamine administration, and the range of variations in the resting energy expenditure and body weight indicators was narrowed remarkably (P < 0.05 or 0.01), whereas the weight and protein content of the skeletal muscle returned to normal (P < 0.05 or 0.01). Glutamine could increase glutaminase activity in various tissues, promote the utilization of glutamine, and appropriately reduce the degree of organ damage and inflammatory response (P < 0.05 or 0.01). Furthermore, glutamine could promote the synthesis of the reducing substances NADPH and glutathione (P < 0.05 or 0.01).

Malnutrition among the elderly is an important health concern in Myanmar. The country is challenged by both an aging population and poor nutritional status. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malnutrition and elucidate its associated factors among the elderly in Loikaw, Myanmar.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August 2019. Using a multistage sampling method, 747 elderly individuals (313 men and 434 women) were recruited. The nutritional status of these participants was assessed using the Mini-Nutritional Assessment tool, with a face-to-face interview method. Body mass index, mid-upper arm and calf circumference, blood pressure, and random blood sugar levels were also assessed. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed.

The aim of this study was to identify which anthropometric measurement (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], or waist-to-height ratio [WHtR]) is a better predictor of type 2 diabetes and hypertension in the Chilean population.

The study included 13 044 participants (59.7% women) from the Chilean National Health Surveys conducted in 2003, 2009-2010, and 2016-2017. BMI, WC, and WHtR were the anthropometric measurements evaluated. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg or on medication for hypertension. Diabetes was defined as fasting glucose ≥7 mmol/L or on medication for diabetes. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve and the area under curve (AUC) were computed to derive the specificity and sensitivity using a bootstrapping approach.

Compared with BMI and WC, WHtR was the anthropometric measurement with the highest AUC curve in both sexes for hypertension (AUC for women 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67-0.73; AUC for men 0.71; 95% CI, 0.69-0.74) and diabetes (AUC for women 0.71; 95% CI, 0.66-0.77; AUC for men 0.71; 95% CI, 0.67-0.76). The sex-specific cutoff points of WHtR to predict hypertension were 0.59 and 0.55 for women and men, respectively. Those used to predict diabetes were 0.60 and 0.58 for women and men, respectively.

WHtR was a better predictor of hypertension and diabetes than BMI and WC in Chile. The definition of cutoff points specific for the Chilean population could be implemented in future screening programs aiming to identify high-risk individuals.
