Due to rising concerns about water pollution and affordability, there is a rapidly-growing public acceptance and global market for a variety of point-of-use (POU) devices for domestic uses. However, the efficiencies and mechanisms of POU technologies for removing regulated and emerging disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are still not systematically known. OSMI-1 concentration To facilitate the development of this field, we summarized performance trends of four common technologies (i.e., boiling, adsorption, membrane filtration, and advanced oxidation) on mitigating preformed DBPs and identified knowledge gaps. The following highest priority knowledge gaps include 1) data on DBP levels at the tap or cup in domestic applications; 2) certainty regarding the controls of DBPs by heating processes as DBPs may form and transform simultaneously; 3) standards to evaluate the performance of carbon-based materials on varying types of DBPs; 4) long-term information on the membrane performance in removing DBPs; 5) knowledge of DBPs' susceptibility toward advanced redox processes; 6) tools to monitor/predict the toxicity and diversity of DBPs formed in waters with varying precursors and when implementing different treatment technologies; and 7) social acceptance and regulatory frameworks of incorporating POU as a potential supplement to current centralized-treatment focused DBP control strategies. We conclude by identifying research needs necessary to assure POU systems protect the public against regulated and emerging DBPs.The recent advancement in low temperature anaerobic processes shows a great promise for realizing low-energy-cost, sustainable mainstream wastewater treatment. However, the considerable loss of the dissolved methane from anaerobically-treated low-strength wastewater significantly compromises the energy potential of the anaerobic processes and poses an environmental risk. In this review, the promises and challenges of existing and emerging technologies for dissolved methane management are examined its removal, recovery, and on-site reuse. It begins by describing the working principles of gas-stripping and biological oxidation for methane removal, membrane contactors and vacuum degassers for methane recovery, and on-site biological conversion of dissolved methane into electricity or value-added biochemicals as direct energy sources or energy-compensating substances. A comparative assessment of these technologies in the three categories is presented based on methane treating efficiency, energy-production potential, applicability, and scalability. Finally, current research needs and future perspectives are highlighted to advance the future development of an economically and technically sustainable methane-management technology. The enhancement of heat transfer between parallel surfaces, including parallel plates, parallel disks, and two concentric pipes, is vital because of their wide applications ranging from lubrication systems to water purification processes. Various techniques can be utilized to enhance heat transfer in such systems. Adding nanoparticles to the conventional working fluids is an effective solution that could remarkably enhance the heat transfer rate. No published review article focuses on the recent advances in nanofluid flow between parallel surfaces; therefore, the present paper aims to review the latest experimental and numerical studies on the flow and heat transfer of nanofluids (mixtures of nanoparticles and conventional working fluids) in such configurations. For the performance analysis of thermal systems composed of parallel surfaces and operating with nanofluids, it is necessary to know the physical phenomena and parameters that influence the flow and heat transfer characteristics in these systems. Significant results obtained from this review indicate that, in most cases, the heat transfer rate between parallel surfaces is enhanced with an increase in the Rayleigh number, the Reynolds number, the magnetic number, and Brownian motion. On the other hand, an increase in thermophoresis parameter, as well as flow parameters, including the Eckert number, buoyancy ratio, Hartmann number, and Lewis number, leads to heat transfer rate reduction.Germ cells are uniquely capable of maintaining cellular immortality, allowing them to give rise to new individuals in generation after generation. Recent studies have identified that the germline state is plastic, with frequent interconversion between germline differentiation states and across the germline/soma border. Therefore, features that grant germline immortality must be inducible, with other cells undergoing some form of rejuvenation to a germline state. In this review, we summarize the breadth of our current interpretations of germline plasticity and the ways in which these fate conversion events can aid our understanding of the underlying hallmarks of germline immortality.A series of monocationic new guanidinobenzimidazole derivatives were prepared in a four step process starting from 2-nitro-1,4-phenylendiamine. Their antiparasitic activity against Plasmodium falciparum, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania donovani were evaluated in vitro. Two out of 20 tested monocationic compounds (7, 14) showed close activity with reference drug chloroquine against P. Falciparum. To understand the interactions between DNA minor groove and in vitro active compounds (7, 14) molecular docking studies were carried out. Stability and binding energies of DNA-ligand complexes formed by DNA with compounds 7 and 14 were measured by molecular dynamics simulations throughout 200 ns time. Root mean square deviation (RMSD) values of the ligands remained stable below 0.25 mm and root mean square fluctuation (RMSF) values of the active site residues with which it interacted decreased compared to the apo form. All compounds exhibited theoretical absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) profiles conforming to Lipinski's and Ghose's restrictive rules.
A BRCA-2 mutation carrier with a metachronous pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PC) and established peritoneal metastases is presented. Combined modality therapy including Cytoreductive Surgery (CS) and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) was associated with long-term disease-free survival.
A 62-yr. old female underwent successful treatment for stage IIIa carcinoma of the right breast at age 48. 11years later a cystic adenocarcinoma of the tail of the pancreas with peritoneal metastases was diagnosed. Platin based neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by definitive resection of the pancreatic mass with cytoreductive surgery (CS) and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) with mitomycin C was performed. Postoperatively, a retro-gastric fluid collection developed from a pancreatic duct leak, successfully managed non-operatively. Maintenance poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitor therapy was initiated after recovery from surgery. The patient experienced a 30-month disease free survival and was subsequently found to have oligometastases to the brain.
