Here it is suggested that, at a supracellular level, the brain exhibits such a fundamental behavior as part of its complex response to stress it is hypothesized that the soft gel formed by brain cell cytoskeletons and the surrounding extracellular matrix (the "cytoskeletons-matrix system") undergoes transitions either to sol (fluidization) or stiff gel (reinforcement) as a very fundamental and evolutionarily conserved brain response to stress, alongside more sophisticated neural pathways. Sol state corresponds to increased cell activity (a sort of "fight or flight" response), whereas stiff gel state corresponds to inactivity (an "immobility" strategy). Psychological stress, through simple stress signals such as pH changes, would lead to an initial tissue fluidization in key regions of the brain, followed, if the stress stimuli persist, by reinforcement (slow formation of actomyosin stress fibers and matrix stiffening). It is also hypothesized that the cytoskeletons-matrix system is one of the biological correlates of so-called "background feelings", i.e conscious feelings built on inner chemical-physical states of the body. Optimal dynamics of the cytoskeletons-matrix system would contribute to a core feeling of well-being, while shifts towards fluidization (activation) or stiffening (inactivation) would contribute to background feelings at the basis of anxiety and stress-induced depression, respectively. It is suggested that the cytoskeletons-matrix system behaves as a "self-organized critical system", anxiety and depression arising whenever the system is driven too far from the optimal critical point. When gastrin was found to be normal in PS babies we considered and accepted, the less complicated hypothesis that a Primary Inherited Hyperacidity itself was the driving force. Such a theory explained nearly all the clinical features. When we further considered the expected consequences of an initially ineffective negative feed -back and its later maturation, the known peak acidity in neonatal development was explained. Although the etiology is complex and has not yet been clarified, dopamine is thought to play a role in the etiology. Methylphenidate (MPH) is a psychostimulant drug used as first-line treatment for ADHD and it inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake transporters. Dopamine also has an effect on retina and contrast sensitivity. Despite evidence indicating the effects of dopamine on contrast sensitivity, the results of studies examining contrast sensitivity in ADHD patients are inconsistent. Also, no studies have been encountered examining the possible effect of MPH on contrast sensitivity. The hypotheses of this study are that children with ADHD who have not used MPH will have lower contrast sensitivity levels than the members of the control group, that contrast sensitivity levels increase after the use of MPH, and that contrast sensitivity is a potential physiological marker for ADHD. The studontrast sensitivity is low in children with ADHD and increases significantly after OROS-MPH medication, but still did not reach the levels of the children without ADHD. Our findings suggest that contrast sensitivity may be a potential physiological marker in ADHD.Proper formation of adult insects requires the integration of spatial and temporal regulatory axes. Whereas spatial information confers identity to each tissue, organ and appendage, temporal information specifies at which stage of development the animal is. Regardless of the type of post-embryonic development, either hemimetabolous or holometabolous, temporal specificity is achieved through interactions between the temporal identity genes Kr-h1, E93 and Br-C, whose sequential expression is controlled by the two major developmental hormones, 20-hydroxyecdysone and Juvenile hormone. Given the intimate regulatory connection between these three factors to specify life stage identity, we dubbed the regulatory axis that comprises these genes as the Metamorphic Gene Network (MGN). In this review, we survey the molecular mechanisms underlying the control by the MGN of stage identity and progression in hemimetabolous and holometabolous insects.Pollinator foraging decisions shape microbial dispersal, and microbes change floral phenotypes in ways perceivable by pollinators. Yet, the role microbes play in the cognitive ecology of pollination is relatively unexplored. Reviewing recent literature on floral microbial ecology and pollinator behavior, we advocate for further integration between these two fields. Insights into pollinator learning, memory, and decision-making can help explain their responses to microbially-altered floral phenotypes. Specifically, considering how pollinators forage for multiple nutrients, cope with uncertainty, structure foraging bouts, and move through their environment could inform predictions about microbial dispersal within plant communities. We highlight how behavior connects microbial changes in floral phenotype to downstream effects on both microbial dispersal and plant fitness.
