5 Espresso Machines Projects That Work For Any Budget
Espresso Machines - The Best Espresso Makers in the UK

If you're seeking the ultimate coffee experience, you can't beat an espresso machine. They're a labor of passion but give you control over every aspect of your coffee.

They typically have an espresso tamper to smooth the grinds and steamer to froth the milk for cappuccinos and lattes.

1. Stovetop

There are approximately 98 million cups of coffee consumed in the UK every day and we have a fantastic range of espresso makers that can be used on stovetops to help you brew the perfect cup of coffee. Also known as moka pots, these appliances utilize pressure to make espresso-like coffee, without the need for any messy filter papers. They are a simple and easy-to-use device that will improve any kind of coffee, and can be used with milk to make cappuccinos or lattes.

Moka pots have an inner chamber that is filled with water, while the coffee grounds are placed in a basket between two pipes which lead to the upper chamber where the finished beverage is served. As the water heats up in the bottom, it pushes its way through the grounds at high pressure and seeps up into the upper chamber where the aromas are released for you to take pleasure in. The result is a fragrant strong, rich and robust coffee that is delicious on its own or with sugar and milk.

When buying a mokapot, the first thing you need to think about is the pot's capacity. It is essential to ensure that the dimensions of the bottom chamber and the capacity of the basket are sufficient for your needs as a larger unit will require a longer wait time while a smaller one may not be able to build up enough pressure. We suggest that you consider the material the machine is made of. Stainless steel machines are more durable and stronger however they cost more.

Other factors to consider is whether the appliance will work with your chosen heat source (gas or electric) and any additional add-ons that might be available like steamer wands for milk that can be used to heat and froth milk to make cappuccinos and lattes. You may also want to consider the number of cups that you can make in one go and this could be a useful factor in selecting the right size unit for you.

We also suggest to check the base of the moka pot to ensure it fits on your burner. Certain models, such as the Stelton collar coffee maker have a base that is narrow that makes it difficult to place the machine on a gas burner. However, larger bases such as those of the Bialetti venus and London Sip stovetop coffee makers, provide better results. We also preferred models with thicker walls as this was found to transfer heat more effectively and prevent it from spreading out too fast.

2. Capsule

Similar to the stovetop models, there are capsule coffee machines that can make cappuccinos, espresso and so on by using pods. This is an excellent option if you don't want to have to deal with messing with brewing, grounds, and cleaning up - they offer an easy, quick and easy method of getting your caffeine fix in the morning.

You'll need to purchase the coffee pods separately. There are a variety of brands available, including Nespresso Dolce Gusto, and Tassimo. There are various sizes to choose from so you can select the size and kind of coffee that best suits your taste. The smallest is the Nespresso Essenza Mini, which is ideal for small areas and can make one cup at one time. There is a larger model that can handle larger cups, but they're more expensive.

For a more sophisticated option that also yields better tasting coffee it is recommended to use the Illy Iperespresso is an elegant alternative for coffee lovers. It's not the most expensive machine, but it does make excellent coffee. It's also simple to use. It has a clever feature which allows it to automatically adjust its settings according to the brand of pods it's using. This makes it one of the most flexible machines, in our opinion.

espresso coffee machines should look for an item with a milk carafe in case you're looking to test all the drinks you can make using a pod machine. This will allow you to experiment with lattes and cappuccinos. You can still make the most popular drinks using a capsule machine without a milk carafe but it's more of a hit and miss affair.

If you're considering purchasing a capsule machine, check that it is compatible with ESE pods. It will have an adapter or basket that will fit these smaller pods. Some of our machines in our collection have this feature, meaning you can use them with Nespresso compatible pods, as well as Dolce Gusto or Tassimo pods.

3. Manual

As the name suggests these are espresso machines operated manually designed for those who prefer a more traditional approach. They look like the OG espresso machine that was invented in Italy back in the early 1900's and operate by pumping water manually into a portafilter before locking it and pushing water under 9 bars of pressure, resulting in an espresso shot.

A manual espresso maker is usually more of a labour of passion than a capsule machine as they require you to heat the water separately from your coffee, then pour it into the chamber above the coffee that has been ground or pods, and then press down on the plunger or lever to create pressure and push the water through and into the cup below. This method is difficult, time-consuming and tedious to master, but the end result is worth it.

Some of the more modern models like the Flair 58 and the Sage The Barista Touch Impress have taken a different approach to make it easier to control, they have utilised an electronic temperature controller known as a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative). This technology is found in immersion circulators and high-end toasters. It is designed to stabilise brew boiler temperatures. The great thing about this is that it takes away much of the guesswork regarding the optimal temperature for brewing and lets you adjust the temperature of your espresso with accuracy.

There are several big names that produce manual espresso makers. The likes of Rancilio and La Pavoni are familiar names to most people who will have worked in a coffee shop or cafe. They make the large two or three group-head commercial espresso machines that you see in a coffee shop but in 1997 they came up with the Silvia, which is a semi-automatic, manual espresso machine with a few bells and whistles to help ease the burden out of the making process.

Fully automated espresso machines do all of the work for you, they grind the beans, tamp, pull a shot and some will steam your milk at the press of a button but they can also cost an astronomical amount of money so you must have an adequate amount of cash to be capable of affording one.

4. Semi-Automatic

Semi-automatic machines are the best option If the idea of re-creating the perfect espresso shot in your favorite café in your home appeals to you. These machines let you adjust your preferences over time and also adjust the amount of your espresso drink based on your mood at any given moment.

The machines include a portafilter as well as a steam wand. The brewing process in these machines is similar to superautomatics, but with additional manual steps, such as grinding the beans and inserting them into the portafilter. They also require more knowledge and skills to operate since the brew cycle is not controlled by a computer.

A good semi-automatic machine will have a removable portafilter and a tamper for firmly compressing the coffee grounds inside the portafilter before brewing. You can also adjust the amount and pressure of water used in the process of brewing. This means you can customize your shots according to your personal preferences and to the specific type of coffee beans you are using.

A semi-automatic machine should also include a temperature control that can be adjustable. This feature allows you set the brewing temperatures for your coffee beans based on the way they taste. It will also help you avoid temperature swings, which is especially important in the case of the boiler that brews the coffee. The brew temperature could vary by as much as 20oF in a cup without a PID controller. This swing is reduced to 0.1oF with a PID.

Some of the higher-end models include a milk froth to create milk-based espresso drinks. This will help you create delicious lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos. The frothing jug must have a comfortable grip and an spout that makes pouring easy.

It is also a good idea to choose an item with a filter that is removable basket and an automatic dosing system for the grounds. You'll be able not have to do the manual grinding and tapping yourself. It also makes cleaning the machine easier.
