South Korea has a particularly strong cultural background for the debate on evolution. 26 percent of South Koreans are part of a religious group and the majority of them practice Christianity or Buddhism. One possible explanation is that students who have a religious background tend not to be as well-versed in scientific concepts and theories which makes them more vulnerable to the influence of creationists. To overcome this issue I employ a longitudinal data set that allows me to account for year and state fixed effects and individual-level variation in the beliefs of teachers about the evolution of their curriculum.

Another important finding is that teachers who are more comfortable with teaching about evolution report having fewer personal barriers to teaching it. This is consistent with the notion that a faculty with more confidence is less likely to avoid evolution topics in the classroom. Additionally, they might be more likely use strategies such as an approach to reconciliation that is known to increase undergraduate student acceptance of evolution (Harms and Reiss, 2019; Tolman et al. 2020).
