Findings also explore the dialectical nature of settings as both empowering and disempowering. Implications for future interventions are discussed.
Outcomes are unpredictable for neurological presentations of Wilson's disease (WD). Dosing regimens for chelation therapy vary and monitoring depends on copper indices, which do not reflect end-organ damage.
To identify a biomarker for neurological involvement in WD.
Neuronal and glial-specific proteins were measured in plasma samples from 40 patients and 38 age-matched controls. Patients were divided into neurological or hepatic presentations and those with recent neurological presentations or deterioration associated with non-adherence were subcategorized as having active neurological disease. Unified WD Rating Scale scores and copper indices were recorded.
Unlike copper indices, neurofilament light (NfL) concentrations were higher in neurological than hepatic presentations. They were also higher in those with active neurological disease when controlling for severity and correlated with neurological examination subscores in stable patients.

With the number of proton therapy centers treating patients increasing, so does the need for consistent, high-quality clinical commissioning practices. Clinical commissioning encompasses the entire proton therapy system's multiple components, including the treatment delivery system, the patient positioning system, and the image-guided radiotherapy components. Also included in the commissioning process are the x-ray computed tomography scanner calibration for proton stopping power, the radiotherapy treatment planning system, and corresponding portions of the treatment management system. This commissioning report focuses exclusively on intensity-modulated scanning systems, presenting details of how to perform the commissioning of the proton therapy and ancillary systems, including the required proton beam measurements, treatment planning system dose modeling, and the equipment needed.
The Mediterranean diet has been proposed to protect against neurodegeneration.
The aim of this study was to assess the association of adherence to Mediterranean dietary pattern (MDP) at middle age with risk for Parkinson's disease (PD) later in life.
In a population-based cohort of >47,000 Swedish women, information on diet was collected through a food frequency questionnaire during 1991-1992, from which adherence to MDP was calculated. We also collected detailed information on potential confounders. Clinical diagnosis of PD was ascertained from the Swedish National Patient Register through 2012.
We observed an inverse association between adherence to MDP and PD, multivariable hazard ratio of 0.54 (95% confidence interval 0.30-0.98), comparing high with low adherence. The association was noted primarily from age 65 years onward. One unit increase in the adherence score was associated with a 29% lower risk for PD at age ≥ 65 years (95% confidence interval 0.57-0.89).
Higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet at middle age was associated with lower risk for PD. © 2020 The Authors. Movement Disorders published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

To aid veterinary pharmacologists and clinicians teaching clinical pharmacology, core competencies were drafted by a working group. Following this process, a Delphi study was performed to come to a consensus on day-1 competencies in veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics. The described competencies could be useful to a variety of stakeholders in veterinary pharmacology, including those teaching veterinary pharmacology worldwide. Secondly, they could form the basis of vertical alignment of the subject within schools and across the world, as well as serving to frame the integration of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics into competency-based veterinary education.Dithieno[a,e]penalenes (DTPs) with various substituents were synthesized as a class of antiaromatic compounds. Annulation of thiophene rings imparts the pentalene moiety with high thermal stability even without bulky substituents, while retaining antiaromaticity. The higher magnitude of antiaromaticity in DTPs, in addition to the differences in the electronic structures of the fused aromatic rings, resulted in a narrower HOMO-LUMO gap than that of the corresponding dibenzo[a,e]pentalene analog, giving rise to red-shifted electronic absorption that reaches the near-infrared region. Moreover, systematic investigations on the solid-state packing structure revealed that DTPs prefer offset face-to-face packing motifs rather than face-centered π-π stacking. In particular, the thienyl-substituted DTP bearing hydrophilic side chains exhibited thermochromic behavior in polar solvents, which was ascribed to the formation of aggregates. The noncovalent interactions between azides and oxygen-containing moieties are investigated through a computational study based on experimental findings. The targeted synthesis of organic compounds with close intramolecular azide-oxygen contacts yielded six new representatives, for which X-ray structures were determined. Two of those compounds were investigated with respect to their potential conformations in the gas phase and a possible significantly shorter azide-oxygen contact. Furthermore, a set of 44 high-quality, gas-phase computational model systems with intermolecular azide-pnictogen (N, P, As, Sb), -chalcogen (O, S, Se, Te), and -halogen (F, Cl, Br, I) contacts are compiled and investigated through semiempirical quantum mechanical methods, density functional approximations, and wave function theory. A local energy decomposition (LED) analysis is applied to study the nature of the noncovalent interaction. The special role of electrostatic and London dispersion interactions is discussed in detail. London dispersion is identified as a dominant factor of the azide-donor interaction with mean London dispersion energy-interaction energy ratios of 1.
