How to Properly Start a Wood Burning Stove
Wood stoves can be a great way to save energy and also heat a room. They do require some maintenance.
Many modern wood stoves meet EPA emissions guidelines. You can check for an EPA sticker on the grate or underneath it to make sure your stove doesn't release harmful pollutants.
How to start a Wood Fire
The smell and the sound of a woodfire can be an excellent addition to any home. However, it is important to know how to properly build a fire in your stove. Incorrect techniques can lead to the fire not burning efficiently and creates creosote or smoke. The following tips can assist you in starting the fire that will warm your home with minimum effort and with the highest security.
Make sure to check the condition of your logs and coals before you start the fire. If they are wet it will dampen your fire and hinder proper burning. You may also want to open the flue to let any ash that has fallen into the stove.
Start by placing a few small newspaper pieces that are dry in your stove. This will help to spark the tinder and ignite your kindling. Once they start to ignite, add a layer of larger pieces of kindling to the top of the pile. This should be done with the crosshatch pattern to ensure that there is air between each piece.
If you own wood stoves that have an automatic control for combustion that will automatically deliver an air stream that is controlled to your fire as it grows. This allows the fire to burn continuously without the need to open the door of your stove often to keep it in check.
Avoid using too much tinder as it will cause the fire to burn at an extremely fast rate and not utilize the fuel efficiently. If you have a nice fire and a bed of tinder in your stove, begin the main fire by placing two large logs of the base across the grate. Then, you can lay small logs perpendicular to these and on the top of the base logs. This "top-down" method of building a fireplace will result in an effective and long-lasting fire that doesn't engulf larger base logs.
Once your fire is well established Close the damper and keep it closed. Doing this too soon can cause the fire to smother and will not allow for proper air flow, which will lower the effectiveness of the fire.
Adding Wood
Stoves aren't only beautiful pieces of home decor They can also help you save money by supplying efficient wood heat. They can be utilized together with a central heating system or furnace to provide additional heating for large homes. Many of the latest stoves that burn cleanly available on the market use advanced combustion principles that is able to separate the burning volatile compounds from combustible gasses and tar. This is done by supplying air in two different stages. The first stage is for the vaporization and the second is to supply fresh air that has been pre-heated. This enhances the combustion process and helps reduce the odors.
The amount of heat that you get from your stove is contingent on the kind of wood and the amount of moisture, as well as the size of the logs. The logs should be stacked in a well-ventilated space for several months prior to when you attempt to burn them to allow the wood to dry. If the logs are wet they will release lots of steam, which is essentially wasted energy.
It is best to add wood to the pile at intervals and not all at one time. In addition, adding too much wood at one time can cause the temperature of the firebox to increase and produces a vortex that sucks smoke and unburnt volatile compounds back into the flame which could reduce your stove's efficiency.
You should avoid the use of other combustibles, like cardboard or paper in your stove, as they are not wood and have very different physical properties that can't be burned without creating dangerously high temperatures and exorbitant emissions. Also, you should not use compressed combustibles like wood briquettes because they have a very different chemical and physical composition to real firewood and aren't approved for burning in wood-burning stoves.
It is crucial to have a professional install and test your wood burning stove. A certified WETT technician will test the installation for safe operation and safety, and also ensure that your chimney is functioning properly. These professionals can also offer maintenance services to keep your stove and chimney in top condition. They will look for leaks in the areas connected to your chimney and fix any issues they discover. They will also make sure that the occupants of the house are aware of and follow the evacuation procedure in case of an accident.
Adjusting the Damper
A damper controls how much heat escapes through the chimney when you aren't using your stove. Additionally, it can also help control the fire. If the flue opens but the damper is not closed, the fire will not be able to burn as it should and smoke will billow into your home. You can adjust your damper to ensure the best flames by playing around with different positions.
Typically, you should keep the damper open enough to let air flow in and out of the flue while the fire is burning. This allows the fire to get going and also helps keep it lit so you can enjoy it for long periods of time. The proper opening will keep the fire from being starved of air and will keep it from blowing smoke.
To adjust antique wood stove , make sure that the fireplace is heated and that the wood stove is hot. This will ensure that the chimney stays warm and has good draft. After that, the damper for wood stoves can be adjusted.
After the fire has been burning for an extended period, close the damper about three quarters of the way. This will stop the warm air from the room from getting into the chimney, while still permitting smoke to escape.
This is the best way to keep your fire lit and keep it from getting too hot. If you close the damper too much, it could stop the draft from working, however if it is too open, a cold wind could blow through your home.
You can check to see how much the damper is opened by placing your hands near the top of the inside of the flue pipe. If you feel a slight breeze rubbing against your hand the damper is probably in the open position.
The damper's setting can vary a little from one stove to another and even between different kinds of wood. You can play around with different settings to get an idea of the most suitable setting for your stove.
Clean up
It is important to clean your stove and flue after the start of a fire. This will help lower the risk of a chimney fire which is the main cause of wood stove related fires in homes. Creosote is a sticky substance that builds up on the inside of the stovepipe and can be very dangerous. The moisture and the unburned parts of wood that cannot escape the fire are responsible for this chemical. It could also be caused by poorly lit fires.
Regular cleaning helps keep away the buildup of creosote. This can be done by sweeping your chimney at least once every year. It is also recommended that you have your stove and fireplace professionally cleaned and checked at least every year.
It is also recommended to clean the ash tray and the grates regularly. It is recommended to use only seasoned wood for burning, as this will produce less creosote and ash. It is also an excellent idea to avoid burning cardboard, paper or plastic items. These items can release dangerous chemicals to the air and flue which can be released into your home.
It is also necessary to clean the glass of the wood stove on a regular basis. Many newer wood stoves have self-cleaning glass, which means they do not require much scrubs. If you are not able to clean the glass of your wood stove as clean as you would like, there are stove glass cleaners available that you can use on the window.
Other tips for maintaining your wood stove are to turn the vent off when you are not using it, and opening windows or doors to increase the flow of air. This will keep the fire burning more hot and efficiently. The wood stove will not need to perform as hard to circulate air. It is also a good idea to not stack logs or leave them in the flame for long periods of time as this could cause warping and splitting. Finally, it is recommended to avoid using compressed combustible wood logs in your wood stove because the paraffin they contain can melt and then flow down the flue which could damage it.
