Evolution Korea
In the past the scientific community in Korea has been hesitant to engage with the creationists in fear that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. The silence is no longer a viable option.
The STR has been fighting to remove evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of how the development paradigm has changed.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with advantageous traits survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. As time passes, this difference in reproduction can lead to the development of completely new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species transformed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that species are evolving into other species in a gradual and predictable manner.
In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. Over time the genetic variability could cause the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. The variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary change. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in muscle mass due to exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by the next generation.
Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their fight to remove evolution from high school textbooks and have also gotten rid of references to the evolutionary roots of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is one of the fundamentals of biology, and helps scientists to understand how living things function and grow. Evolution also shows how different species are connected. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world, and also to make important discoveries, such as developing new treatments.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe as well as life on this planet, and it has been rigorously tested and confirmed over a long period of time. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology isn't in contradict religious beliefs because it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.
In fact many religious individuals have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. Some Christians for instance believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is important for science educators to stand up for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the globe there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. This belief is based on many different reasons. What is Creationism?

While some creationists are not Christian however, many are. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most popular kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs are not as well-known, but they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.
Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require a miracle, and that the founders of modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and special creation, and call their view “theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think about creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.
STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons aren't clear, but could include religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.
The KACR achieved many things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
