ment.C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major acute-phase protein, and it is produced by the liver in response to a pro-inflammatory stimulus. Given that human and canine CRP have a similar molecular structure, the assays used for human CRP detection have been used to measure CRP concentrations in dogs. We evaluated the use of a human CRP assay (Biotecnica CRP assay) and validated its application in dogs. We analyzed 91 canine serum samples with a fully automated analyzer. Our validation was based on the evaluation of imprecision, limits of linearity, limits of quantification, and an evaluation of interferences. The new assay was also compared with the Randox CRP assay, a validated assay for the measurement of CRP. Intra- and inter-assay repeatability were less then 8% and less then 11%, respectively. The tested assay proportionally measured canine CRP in an analytical range up to 60 mg/L; however, hemoglobin, triglycerides, and bilirubin interfered with the determination. Good agreement, with the presence of proportional systematic bias, was observed between Biotecnica and Randox assays. The Biotecnica CRP assay provides reliable measurement of CRP in canine serum, provided that samples are free of interferents.Recent trends indicate that HIV and STI infection rates are rising among adults over the age of 50, and African American women have the highest rates of HIV infection across racial and ethnic groups of women in the USA. Limited research has examined factors that contribute to HIV risk among older African American women. Vorapaxar datasheet The current study used Collins' Black Feminist Thought to examine and understand attitudes and perceptions around HIV and sexual risk behaviours among African American women aged 50 years and older. Participants were recruited from two faith-based organisations in the mid-Atlantic region of the USA. Overarching themes and subthemes included those of expectations among African American women (carry yourself as you were raised, and carry a big burden), risk factors (not at risk, sexual networks and loneliness) and protective factors (maintaining high standards and education). Findings from this study have implications for the development of future HIV prevention programmes involving older African American women, who have largely been overlooked by past and ongoing HIV prevention trials and safer sex promotion efforts.Gene polymorphism is one of the few factors that increases the risk of prostate cancer. T to C substitution in the 5' promoter region of the CYP17 gene is hypothesized to increase the rate of gene transcription, increase androgen production, and thereby increase the risk of prostate cancer. Nevertheless, the inconsistencies originating from studies on CYP17 polymorphism and prostate cancer prompted this meta-analysis, to decipher the association between CYP17 polymorphism and prostate cancer. Most case-control studies addressing CYP17 polymorphism and prostate cancer were exhaustively searched from Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed. The various genotype distributions as well as the minor allele distributions were retrieved. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% CI and estimates of the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium were calculated. Analyses were performed using the RevMan v.5.3 software and SPSS v.21. There was high-pooled heterogeneity (I2 = 87.0%, OR = .42, CI [.39, .45], and p less then .001) among the A2 versus A1 allele. With the per-allele model (A2 versus A1), ethnicity was a major risk factor to prostate cancer, with Asians recording the highest risk (OR = 12.61, 95% CI [8.77, 18.12]). From the genotype models, A1/A1 versus A2/A2 (OR = 3.02, 95% CI [2.65, 3.44]) and A1/A2 versus A2/A2 (OR = 4.39, 95% CI [3.86, 5.00]) were all significantly associated with prostate cancer. Although some genotype models were associated with the risk of prostate cancer, we should be mindful when interpreting the results of this study because of the limited number of studies and the small sample size used. This study investigates associations between internal migration and health among middle-aged and older adults in China, including variations associated with type of migration (rural-to-urban, urban-to-rural, rural-to-rural, urban-to-urban). Data were drawn from China's Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011, 2013, 2015). Lagged panel and fixed-effect regression models address associations between migration and health outcomes (self-rated health, depression) while controlling for pre-migration and post-migration selection effects. The results reveal the positive implications of rural-to-urban migration for the self-rated health of middle-aged but not older adults. They also point to the positive effects of migration within and to rural areas for the self-rated and mental health of older adults. Overall, although migration may be beneficial to the health of internal migrants in China, complexities associated with age, type of migration, and the health outcome involved need to be taken into account. The objective of this study was to explore how home care workers and the agencies that employ them interact with their state's nurse practice act in the provision of care. Using a qualitative case study approach, we selected four states with varying levels of restrictiveness in their nurse delegation regulations. We conducted interviews (N = 45) with state leaders, agency leaders, and home care workers to learn how these policies affect the home care workforce's ability to perform care tasks for their clients in order to allow clients to remain in their own homes. We found that increased training and input from registered nurses is needed to identify appropriate health maintenance tasks to delegate to home care workers and support development of training strategies. The federal government could support the development of evidence-based guidelines for training and competency testing as well as for appropriate delegation of health maintenance tasks.
When patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder are suffering from acute mania (involuntary), hospitalization is often necessary. Patients are often quite disruptive, which makes it difficult to regulate their behavior and manage them in their current condition. The nursing team must also ensure the safety of the other patients on the ward. Nursing practice in this domain appears to draw primarily on tradition and experience.

To achieve consensus on a standard for nursing practice for patients suffering from mania who are admitted to a closed psychiatric ward.

Previously, professionals, patients, and informal caregivers in the Netherlands were interviewed about the nursing care and their lived experiences. Based on these findings and on the results of a literature review, 89 statements were formulated. A three-round Delphi study among professionals, patients, and informal caregivers was carried out. The accepted statements were summarized.

In the first round, 71 statements were accepted, none were rejected, and for 18 statements, no consensus could be reached.
