Invasive species are among the leading threats to global ecosystems due to impacts on native flora and fauna through competition and predation. The lily leaf beetle, Lilioceris lilii Scopoli (Coleoptera Chrysomelidae), is an invasive pest of lilies (Lilium spp.) and other genera of Liliaceae (Liliales). A habitat suitability model was created using Maxent, to help predict if L. lilii will be able to establish in locations were native North American Liliaceae species grow. The model was created using georeferenced occurrence records from the beetle's native, naturalized, and invasive range. Model results indicate that precipitation in the driest quarter and annual average temperatures are most strongly correlated with L. lilii distribution, and suggest that the species will perform poorly in very dry, hot, or cold environments. The model also indicates that the beetle should be able to establish throughout the range of most North American Liliaceae genera, including species of special conservation concern. This model can be used by natural area managers to identify areas of high habitat suitability that overlap with vulnerable North American Liliaceae species, and prioritize L. lilii monitoring and control activities as the beetle continues to expand its range. The dAdGoxo pair appearing in nucleic ds-DNA can lead to a mutation in the genetic information. Depending on the dGoxo source, an AT→GC and GC→AC transversion might be observed. As a result, glycosylases are developed during the evolution, i.e., OGG1 and MutY. While the former effectively removes Goxo from the genome, the second one removes adenine from the dAdGoxo and dAdG pair. However, dAdGoxo is recognized by MutY as ~6-10 times faster than dAdG. In this article, the structural and electronic properties of simple nucleoside pairs dAdG, dCdGoxo, dCdG, dAdGoxo in the aqueous phase have been taken into theoretical consideration. The influence of solvent relaxation on the above is also discussed. It can be concluded that the dAdGoxo nucleoside pair shows a lower ionization potential and higher electron affinity than the dAdG pair in both a vertical and adiabatic mode. Therefore, it could be predicted, under electronic properties, that the electron ejected, for instance by a MutY 4[Fe-S]2+ cluster, is predisposed to trapping by the ds-DNA part containing the dAdGoxo pair rather than by dAdG.The genus Stromatoneurospora was erected in 1973 by Jong and Davis to accommodate the pyrophilic pyrenomycete Sphaeria phoenix and has traditionally been placed in the family Xylariaceae based on morphological features. However, no living culture of this genus has so far been available in the public domain. Molecular data were restricted to an internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence that only confirmed the familial position, and was generated from a strain that is not deposited in a public culture collection. We have recently collected fresh material and were able to culture this fungus from Thailand. The secondary metabolites of this strains were analysed after fermentation in multiple media. The the prominent components of these fermentation were purified, using preparative chromatography. Aside from two new eremophilane sesquiterpenoids named phoenixilanes A-B (1-2), four other components that are known from species of the xylariaceous genera Xylaria and Poronia were identified by spectral methods (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry). Notably, (-)-(R)-6-hydroxy-3-methyl-4-dihydroisocoumarin-5-carboxylic acid (6) has not been reported as a natural product before. Moreover, DNA sequences of Stromatoneurospora phoenix clustered with members of the genera Poronia and Podosordaria in a multi-locus molecular phylogeny. These results confirmed that the genus belongs to the same evolutionary lineage as the coprophilic Xylariaceae. The results also suggest that this lineage has evolved independently from the plant-inhabiting saprotrophs and endophytes that are closely related to the genus Xylaria. These findings are discussed in relation to some theories about the endophytic vs. the pyrophilic/coprophilic fungal life style.Obesity is a notable risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes, augmenting the concern of obese diabetes (ObD). Anti-obesity and antioxidant effects of red pepper seeds extract (RPSE) have increased our expectations that RPSE would also improve the pathological phenotypes of obese diabetes. Therefore, we hypothesized that RPSE would have an anti-diabetic effect in ObD mice. Animals were assigned either as follows (1) db/+, (2) db/db control, (3) RPSE (200 mg/kg bw), or (4) a comparative control (metformin 150 mg/kg bw). RPSE was orally administered daily for 8 weeks. As a result, RPSE supplementation improved diabetic phenotypes, including fasting glucose, hemoglobin (HbA1c), and insulin levels. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6), and triglycerides were reduced in RPSE-treated mice. RPSE supplementation also diminished the rate-limiting enzymes of gluconeogenesis, including glucose 6-phosphatas (G6Pase) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), in the liver. RPSE supplementation increased the phosphorylation of forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which underlined the mechanism of the anti-diabetic effects of RPSE. Taken together, RPSE has the potential to improve glycemic control by repressing hepatic gluconeogenesis via the phosphorylation of FOXO1 and AMPK in ObD mice.Harpagophytum procumbens (Burch.) DC. ex Meisn. is a traditional remedy for osteoarticular diseases, including osteoarthritis (OA), although the bioactive constituents and mechanisms involved are yet to be clarified. In the present study, an aqueous H. procumbens root extract (HPE; containing 1.2% harpagoside) was characterized for its effects on synoviocytes from OA patients and phytochemical composition in polyphenols, and volatile compounds were detected. selleck chemicals HPE powder was dissolved in different solvents, including deionized water (HPEH2O), DMSO (HPEDMSO), 100% v/v ethanol (HPEEtOH100), and 50% v/v ethanol (HPEEtOH50). The highest polyphenol levels were found in HPEDMSO and HPEEtOH50, whereas different volatile compounds, mainly β-caryophyllene and eugenol, were detected in all the extracts except for HPEH2O. HPEH2O and HPEDMSO were able to enhance CB2 receptor expression and to downregulate PI-PLC β2 in synovial membranes; moreover, all the extracts inhibited FAAH activity. The present results highlight for the first time a multitarget modulation of the endocannabinoid system by HPE, likely ascribable to its hydrosoluble compounds, along with the presence of volatile compounds in H.
