This finding suggests that PKH labelling may not be a reliable technique for the tracking of EVs.This is a seven-year study (1/7/2011-31/12/2017) of radon monitoring at two sites of Campi Flegrei caldera (Neaples, Southern Italy) that in the last 70 years experienced repeated phases of volcanic unrest. The sites are equipped with devices for radon detection, based on the spectrometry analysis of the α-particles of radon daughters. A hybrid method, as combination of three known methods, is applied for the identification of residuals (anomalies) and trends of the time series of Radon. The results are compared with the following indicators of current caldera unrest the tremor caused by the major fumarolic vent registered by a seismic station; the cumulative of background seismicity; the maximum vertical deformation acquired by GPS networks during the current phase of uplift; the temperature-pressure of the hydrothermal system estimated based on gas geo-indicators. The comparisons show strong correlation among independent signals and suggest that the extension of the area affected by current Campi Flegrei crisis is larger than the area of seismicity and of intense hydrothermal activity from which the radon stations are 1-4 km away. These results represent an absolute novelty in the study of a such calderic area and mark a significant step forward in the use and interpretation of the radon signal.Nanoporous Au exhibits high antibacterial activity (AA) without releasing reactive oxygen species or metal ions, instead its AA depends on the work function (WF) because cell walls are affected by peculiar electronic states at the surface. Based on this mechanism, a flat surface without nanostructure should show high AA if the WF of the surface is suitably tuned. To verify this, ultrathin Pt islands with high WF was fabricated on flat Au by underpotential deposition (UPD) of copper and subsequent redox replacement with Pt, and the AA of the Pt/Au substrate on Escherichia coli was evaluated. The Pt/Au substrate showed higher AA than Pt and Au surfaces, and a positive relationship between AA and WF was demonstrated. In addition, first principles calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism for the high WF of the Pt/Au substrate. The findings suggest that the high WF of the Pt/Au substrate is at least partly due to charge transfer from Au to Pt.This study investigated the physiological and ecological changes in P. sepium Bunge and elucidated the physiological regulatory mechanisms underlying the adaptation of P. sepium to drought stress in shell sand. Drought stress led to a significant decrease in the net photosynthesis rate (Pn) and respiration rate of leaves and a decrease in low-intensity light-use efficiency (LUE) and light ecological amplitude. An increase in drought stress led to a considerable decrease in the photosynthetic electron transport rate in the P. sepium leaves and a significant increase in the amount of light energy dissipated as heat. In addition, the photosynthesis process suffered from severe photoinhibition. P. sepium plants counteracted the effects of drought stress primarily by increasing their peroxidase (POD) activity and by regulating membrane lipid peroxidation by secreting greater numbers of osmotic adjustment substances (proline (Pro) and soluble sugars (Ss)) and malondialdehyde (MDA). As drought stress increased, both the stem sap flow rate and the cumulative sap flow of P. sepium decreased considerably. P. sepium Bunge adapts to drought stress through interregulatory activity between photosynthesis, water-related physiological activities, and physiological and biochemical processes, and this species exhibits relatively high adaptive plasticity to drought.Babesia microti is an intraerythrocytic parasite and the primary causative agent of human babesiosis. It is transmitted by Ixodes ticks, transfusion of blood and blood products, organ donation, and perinatally. Despite its global public health impact, limited progress has been made to identify and characterize immunodominant B. microti antigens for diagnostic and vaccine use. Using genome-wide immunoscreening, we identified 56 B. microti antigens, including some previously uncharacterized antigens. Thirty of the most immunodominant B. microti antigens were expressed as recombinant proteins in E. coli. Among these, the combined use of two novel antigens and one previously described antigen provided 96% sensitivity and 100% specificity in identifying B. microti antibody containing sera in an ELISA. Using extensive computational sequence and bioinformatics analyses and cellular localization studies, we have clarified the domain architectures, potential biological functions, and evolutionary relationships of the most immunodominant B. microti antigens.
