PURPOSE Workers' compensation schemes usually recompense workers below their regular wage. This may cause financial stress, which has previously been associated with poorer health and work outcomes after injury. We sought to determine the level of financial stress experienced by injured workers and the influence of post-injury income source on financial stress. METHODS Analysis of a cross-sectional national survey of 4532 adults who had been injured at work and had at least one day of workers' compensation paid. Financial stress at time of survey was measured on a scale of 1-10 and subsequently dichotomised at the top quartile for further analysis. The effect of current main income source on financial stress, adjusted for demographic and psychosocial confounders, was assessed using logistic regression. RESULTS Sixty-nine percent of workers whose main income was social assistance or insurance and 54% whose main income was workers' compensation were experiencing financial stress. Relative to wages or salaries, workers with a main income from social assistance or insurance (odds ratio 3.33, 95% CI 2.22-5.00) and workers' compensation (1.71, 1.31-2.24) had higher odds of financial stress. Workers with a main income of an aged pension or superannuation had lower odds of financial stress (0.52, 0.28-0.97). CONCLUSION Injured workers receiving workers' compensation or social assistance benefits are vulnerable to increased financial stress. Given the potential negative consequences of financial stress on health, particularly mental health, this study suggests the need for careful consideration of income replacement benefits in the design of workers' compensation schemes.BACKGROUND Lead is a dangerous systemic toxicant and can provoke life-threatening renal injury. The plan of this study was to evaluate the potential impact of curcumin (CRMN) and L-ascorbic acid (L-ascb) alone or together to counteract lead acetate (Pb-acetate)-induced renal damage in rats and to find out the underlying mechanisms of action of these nutraceuticals. METHODS Pb-acetate (100 mg/kg/day, i.p.) was injected in male rats along with L-ascb (250 mg/kg/day) and/or CRMN (200 mg/kg/day) orally for 7 days. RESULTS Pb-acetate administration increased serum urea, creatinine and uric acid. Renal tissue showed a marked depletion in reduced glutathione level and superoxide dismutase activity and elevation in nitric oxide and malondialdehyde levels. Serum C-reactive protein and IL-1β levels were elevated. Up-regulation of the expression of kidney injury molecule, vascular adhesion molecule-1 and Cystatin C were noticed after Pb-acetate administration. DNA fragmentation was also increased in renal tissues. Histopathological examination revealed a destructed partial layer of Bowman's capsule, proximal and distal convoluted tubules. Treatment with the aforementioned antioxidants ameliorated most of the altered measured biomarker levels. CONCLUSION Interestingly, the combination of L-ascb and CRMN showed the superlative protective effect against Pb-acetate-induced nephrotoxicity.BACKGROUND Fluoxetine is one of the most widely prescribed antidepressants and a selective inhibitor of presynaptic 5-HT transporters. The fornix is the commissural and projection fiber that transmits signals from the hippocampus to other parts of the brain and opposite site of hippocampus. The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest of the commissural fibers that link the cerebral cortex of the left and right cerebral hemispheres. These brain regions play pivotal roles in cognitive functions, and functional abnormalities in these regions have been implicated in the development of various brain diseases. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of fluoxetine on the proliferation and/or survival of microglia and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) in the fornix and CC, the white matter connecting cortical-limbic system, of the adult mouse brain. METHODS The effects of fluoxetine on the proliferation and/or survival of microglia and OPCs were examined in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated and normal mice. Proliferating cells were detected in mice that drank water containing the thymidine analog, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), using immunohistochemistry. RESULT Fluoxetine significantly attenuated LPS-induced increases in the number of BrdU-labeled microglia and morphological activation from the ramified to ameboid shape, and decreased the number of BrdU-labeled OPCs under basal conditions. CONCLUSIONS The present results indicate that fluoxetine exerts inhibitory effects on LPS-induced increases in the proliferation and/or survival and morphological activation of microglia and basal proliferation and/or survival of OPCs in the fornix and CC of adult mice.In this cross-sectional study, we examine disparities in physical activity (PA) rates, a determinant of obesity risk, by exploring the impact of household economic hardship, social support, and family structure on adolescent physical activity levels. Bleximenib price We assess whether these factors have a different impact on PA stratified by parental nativity status (Hispanic adolescents of foreign- and native-born caregivers compared with whites). The sample included 1927 white and Hispanic 15-year-olds of foreign-born (outside of USA) and native US-born caregivers from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. We assessed whether economic hardship, family/friend encouragement for PA, married/cohabiting caregivers, and having a resident grandparent was associated with frequency of PA in the past week, while controlling for age, education, and child's sex. We examined the interaction effects of parent nativity on economic hardship and family support. Results indicate disproportionately higher PA levels for white adolescents compared with Hispanic adolescents of foreign-born caregivers (B = -0.41, SE = 0.19, p = 0.03), for adolescents with more family/friend encouragement (B = 0.81, SE = 0.10, p less then 0.001), and for adolescents in cohabiting households (B = 0.28, SE = 0.14, p = 0.04); support and hardship factors did not vary by nativity status. Researchers and practitioners should address differences among ethnic/generational subgroups and family/friend supports that may improve adolescent PA levels, particularly among Hispanic adolescent subgroups. Physical activity levels continue to be dismal especially for racial/ethnic minority groups, which puts them at further risk of consequences of physical inactivity, including life-long complications associated with being an obese adolescent.
