Sapphires is the rarest and most valuable blue colored natural gems. The sapphire is a very desirable gemstone because of its beautiful royal blue colour, durability (second only after diamonds), and luster. In the gem trade, sapphire refers only to the blue variety (such as the mineral Corundum) without any prefix. Sapphire includes all colors and varieties of Corundum, with the exception of Ruby, the red variety.
Sapphire corundum made in a laboratory is a synthetically-produced crystal whose hardness is second only after diamond on the Mohs Scale, making it extremely strong. Durability is crucial because gemstones can chip. It grows as cylindrical sticks known as boules and is produced through a labor-intensive, slow and expensive process.
The most important quality of a Sapphire is color. The color of a sapphire should be as pure as possible, but the saturation also matters. The top sapphires can reach vibrant saturation (pure, royal blue), as the majority of gems in the market are greyish. The tone is another important consideration. Dark sapphires are much in the market but they never reach very high values.
Padparadschas, which are orange-pink in color, are also very valuable. A sapphire that is also known as the Color Changing Sapphire changes colors depending on how it's lit. In natural light, this color-changing Sapphire turns blue, but in artificial light, it displays a violet color. However, the yellow and pink Sapphire have become very popular, and are now often seen in jewelry.
Sapphires range in price based on their price. Sapphires are priced anywhere from $25 to over $11,000 a carat. The most expensive sapphire was sold on record costing $135,000 per carat. The quality of a sapphire will determine the price. So a big, low-quality one would be more expensive than a tiny, high-quality one.
Blue sapphires often have inclusions. However, they are more clear than rubies. Several types of inclusions can be found in various sapphires. This is illustrated by the inclusions of long, thin minerals called needles. They may also contain feathers or cloudy white lines that make sapphires appear opaque. It is rare to find blues sapphires of high clarity. They are therefore very valuable. Rarity increases the price.
Kashmir produces some of the most valuable sapphires. The Himalayan mountains are the only place where these precious stones can be mined. They possess beautiful coloration, but what sets them apart from the rest is their very fine silk. This gives the stone a velvety texture. It produces a glow, which minimizes extinction. This effect is only seen in Burmese rubies.
Sapphires: Why are they so expensive?
The price of sapphires can vary from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars depending on the color and size. The most costly colors are intense pinks, highly saturated blues and padparadscha. The large size of blue sapphires is another reason why they have the highest price. A pink or padparadscha will only sell for the same price if it weighs over 100 carats. The existence of stones such as these with exceptional color and transparency is extremely rare.
Blue Sapphire stone of sapphires is largely determined by its color, size and weight. Clarity and details are also important. clarity will always be possible to re-cut a sapphire stone, so it is more important.
A 1 to 2-carat top-quality stone could retail between $800 and $1,000 per carat. The price of a quality stone 2 to 3 carsats would be approximately double that per carat. This would come out to around $1600-$2000 per carat. Prices can be extrapolated for larger or smaller stones but there is no linear formula or exponential formula. Prices change over time.
Prices of Synthetic and Natural Materials
It is impossible to tell the difference between synthetic and natural gemstones. This means that the quality is too high. Synthetic gemstones have a superior appearance because they are free of impurities. However, their prices are lower than other natural gemstones. However, sapphire is a gemstone of very high quality. It's also incredibly rare. It is therefore a very expensive gemstone.
Getting a well-cut, high-quality carat sapphire would cost more than other gemstones since a quality sapphire is made to the very best value and is a very rare gemstone which makes the demand high and increases the price.
