Heat concentration is energy intensive and leads to cooked flavor and color changes in the final product, and RO is affected by fouling, which limits the final achievable concentration of the product. The main objective of this work was to evaluate forward osmosis (FO) as an alternative method for concentrating milk. The effects of fat content and temperature on the process were evaluated, and the physicochemical properties and sensory qualities of the final product were assessed. Commercially pasteurized skim and whole milk samples were concentrated at 4, 15, and 25°C using a benchtop FO unit. The FO process was assessed by monitoring water flux and product concentration. The color of the milk concentrates was also evaluated. JKE1674 A sensory panel compared the FO concentrated and thermally concentrated milks, diluted to single strength, with high temperature, short time pasteurized milk. The FO experimon. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of corn grain varying in endosperm type and conserved as high-moisture or dry ground corn on dry matter intake (DMI), feeding behavior, ruminal fermentation, and yields of milk and milk components of cows in early to mid-lactation. Seven ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows (73 ± 39 d in milk; mean ± SD) were used in a duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used with main effects of corn grain endosperm type (floury or vitreous) conserved as high-moisture corn (HMC) or dry ground corn (DGC). Rations were formulated to contain 27.0% starch, 26.6% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 19.1% forage NDF, and 16.5% crude protein. Corn grain treatments supplied 86.6% of dietary starch and contained alfalfa silage as the sole forage. Dry matter intake was increased 1.3 kg/d by DGC compared with HMC. The increase in DMI by DGC was related to a shorter intermeal interval (104.4 vs. 118.2 min/d), and meal sierm. Corn endosperm type and conservation method had little effect on productive performance of high-producing cows.In the Dutch national surveillance system, an increasing number of reports were received in the summer of 2017 from farmers about unusual behavior of their cows. The cows were grouping during the day in summer in one part of the barn and did not move for several hours, which, according to the farmers, led to reduced food and water intake and lying time and resulted in decreased milk production and increased risk of lameness. Many farmers perceived magnetic fields from, for instance, high-voltage lines, automated milking systems, or solar panels as possible causes for the behavior of their cows. Our aim for the study was to study potential factors such as magnetic fields and other factors such as barn climate and insect burden for adverse grouping behavior of dairy cows in the barn. For each case herd, 2 control herds were selected in the same postal area code. A case was a herd in which cattle grouped at least on 7 occasions in a month for several hours. In a control herd, the cows were in the barn during thearmers hopefully results in measures that can prevent the unusual grouping behavior of cows.We reported recently that adding bakery by-products (BP) to the diets of dairy cows up to 30% improved performance and rumen pH, but caused major shifts in the nutrient profile and availability, likely modifying nutrient degradation patterns throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the gradual replacement of cereals by BP on the apparent total-tract digestibility (ATTD), the fermentation patterns, and the microbial community in feces of dairy cows. Twenty-four mid-lactating Simmental cows (149 ± 22.3 days in milk, 756 ± 89.6 kg of initial body weight) were fed a total mixed ration ad libitum (fresh feed was offered twice per day) containing a 5050 ratio of forage to concentrate (dry matter basis) throughout the experiment. The trial lasted 5 wk, whereby the first week was used for baseline measurements, in which all cows received the same diet, without BP. Cows were then randomly allocated into 3 groups differing in the BP content of diets (0% BP, 15% BP, e dairy cows' feeding, a dietary level between 15 to 30% of BP might be a better compromise than 30% in terms of an enhanced DOMI and performance with still lowered risk of hindgut dysbiosis, but this will require further investigations. The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effects of an immunomodulatory supplement (OmniGen AF, OG; Phibro Animal Health Corp.) and heat stress on hormonal, inflammatory, and immunological responses of lactating dairy cows. Sixty multiparous Holstein cows were randomly assigned to 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement using 2 environments cooled using fans and misters, or noncooled, and 2 top-dressed feed supplements (56 g/d) OG or a placebo (CTL). Temperature-humidity index averaged 78 during the 8-wk trial. Blood was drawn to analyze cortisol, prolactin, and circulating tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and IL-10. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated and stimulated with hydrocortisone, prolactin, or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), individually or in several combinations, to assess induced proliferation and cytokine production. At d 52, 6 cows per treatment were injected i.v. with an LPS bolus (ivLPS) to assess hormone and cytokine responses. For cooled cows, feeding OG increased plasma cortisol concentration relative to CTL.
