This study investigated the accuracy and duration of intraoral digital photograph examination (IDPE) for evaluating oral health status and explored the feasibility of remote oral health assessment.

Thirty-one healthy college students underwent evaluations of oral health status via clinical examination (CE) combined with panoramic X-ray assessment at baseline, followed by IDPE 1 month later using photos taken at baseline. Methods for evaluation of gingival health included the Modified Gingival Index (MGI) and Plaque Index (PI). Examinations of caries status included the decayed, missing, and filled teeth and surfaces indexes (DMFT and DMFS indexes, respectively). The duration of each evaluation was also recorded.

There were significant differences in MGI and PI between CE and IDPE. There were no significant differences in DMFT and DMFS indexes between CE and IDPE, and there were positive correlations between CE and IDPE for each of the two indexes (DMFT index r=0.56; DMFS index r=0.69). The IDPE duration was shorter than the CE duration.

The feasibility of caries status assessment via IDPE is promising. Digital oral health evaluation merits further clinical consideration.

To examine postnatal changes in the impaired brainstem auditory pathway in term infants after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI).

Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was studied at 2-4 months of age in term infants who suffered perinatal HI. The BAER data obtained at various click rates in these infants were compared with those in age-matched normal term controls to detect any abnormalities.

The infants after HI showed a slight elevation in BAER threshold. Four (9.8%) infants had threshold elevation. At 21/s clicks, there was a slight decrease in wave I latency, and a slight increase in wave III and V latencies. However, the I-V and I-III intervals in these infants were significantly increased (
 < .05 and .05), whereas III-V interval was slightly increased. At higher click rates of 51 and 91/s, all BAER variables showed similar changes, with only small variations. An abnormal increase in the I-V and/or I-III intervals was seen in 4 (9.8%) infants, who were not associated with BAER threshold elevation.

At 2-4 months of age, around 20% of the infants after perinatal HI showed a moderate degree of either peripheral or central impairment of the brainstem auditor pathway. Monitoring postnatal changes could provide valuable information for postnatal care of infants after perinatal HI.

To assess the clinical characteristics of 168 children with adenovirus pneumonia complicated by pulmonary consolidation and atelectasis.

We retrospectively studied patients with adenovirus pneumonia complicated by pulmonary consolidation and atelectasis admitted to Xiamen Children's Hospital from March 2019 to August 2019. In total, 168 patients were recruited and divided into a severe group and non-severe group according to disease severity. Clinical results were assessed.

All children had fever and cough, 29 had wheezing, and 82 had dyspnea. Pleural effusion was found in 53 patients. Mixed infections were present in 95 patients. A total of 105 patients received hormone therapy, 72 received intravenous gamma globulin, and 103 underwent bronchoscopy, among whom 6 were found to have bronchial casts. Of the 168 children, 166 were cured and two died. The patients were divided by disease severity, with 82 in the severe group and 86 in the non-severe group. The two groups showed significant differences in the fever course, pleural effusion, mixed infections, hemoglobin concentration, procalcitonin concentration, and lactate dehydrogenase concentration.

A long fever course, mixed infection, pleural effusion, decreased hemoglobin concentration, and increased procalcitonin and lactate dehydrogenase concentrations may be associated with more severe adenovirus pneumonia.

We herein describe a 78-year-old man with sigmoid colon perforation caused by accidental swallowing of a jujube pit. The jujube pit had become stuck in the wall of the sigmoid colon and was successfully removed by colonoscopy, avoiding an aggressive surgery. As a result of developments in endoscopic techniques, endoscopic closure has become a feasible option for the management of intestinal perforation.
Paroxysmal tonic upgaze (PTU) is an infantile-onset paroxysmal neurological disorder that is characterized by episodes of sustained conjugate upward eye deviation. The paroxysmal abnormal eye movements need to be differentiated from seizures. We report a case of PTU with occipital discharge on electroencephalography (EEG), which made the diagnosis more complicated.

A 6-month-old girl presented with paroxysmal upward deviation or left strabismus of the eyes, with a bowed head, lowered jaw, raised eyebrows, closed lips, and slight grin. Each episode lasted for a few seconds, and episodes occurred multiple times per day. EEG showed spike waves in the right occipital region, and the girl was initially misdiagnosed with epilepsy. After further analysis using video EEG, we corrected her diagnosis as PTU and stopped the administration of an antiepileptic drug.

PTU accompanied by discharge on EEG may lead to a misdiagnosis. Video EEG monitoring, and especially the analysis of EEG traces synchronized with attacks, can provide evidence to distinguish between seizures and non-epileptic events.
