Here, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of thyroid tumors (n = 164; 76 malignant, 88 benign) was performed and five (5) neural network (NN) models were designed to discriminate the obtained spectral data. PCA-LDA was used as classical benchmark for comparison. Each NN model was evaluated using a stratified 10-fold cross-validation method to avoid overfitting, and the performance metrics-accuracy, area under the curve (AUC), positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), specificity rate (SR), and recall rate (RR)-were averaged for comparison. All NN models were able to perform excellently as classifiers, and all were able to surpass the LDA model in terms of accuracy. Among the NN models, the RNN model performed best, having an AUC of 95.29% ± 6.08%, an accuracy of 98.06% ± 2.87%, a PPV of 98.57% ± 4.52%, a NPV of 93.18% ± 7.93%, a SR value of 98.89% ± 3.51%, and a RR value of 91.25% ± 10.29%. The RNN model outperformed the LDA model for all metrics except for the AUC, NPV, and RR. In conclusion, NN-based tools were able to predict thyroid cancer based on infrared spectroscopy of tissues with a high level of diagnostic performance in comparison to the gold standard.

Brain ischemia was induced via the right unilateral common carotid artery occlusion model. Then, behavioral assessments including the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) were used to evaluate the antidepressant-like effect of PSL. Moreover, inflammatory cytokines changes in the hippocampus including TNF-α and IL-10 levels as well as the number of survived neurons were evaluated in ST mice using immunohistochemistry(IHC).

A significant reduction of the immobility time in both behavioral tests indicated the antidepressant activity of PSL. Moreover, the number of viable neurons increased significantly with PSL treatment, which was similar to control group, compared to the untreated ST group. IHC analysis of ST mice receiving PSL showed a significant reduction in TNF-α and IL-10 levels in the inflamed hippocampusof mice.

Juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus ((j)SLE) is an autoimmune/inflammatory disease that results in significant damage and disability. When compared to patients with disease onset in adulthood, jSLE patients exhibit increased disease activity, damage and require more aggressive treatments. This manuscript summarises age-specific pathogenic mechanisms and underscores the need for age group-specific research, classification and treatment.

In the primary analysis (n = 2331), cystectomy was identified as an important cost driver masking potential differences between cohorts. Therefore, patients undergoing cystectomy (InQ + FU) were excluded from the adjusted study population of n = 4541 patients (WL 79%; BL 21%). Mean total costs of BL-TURB were initially comparable to WL-TURB (WL EUR4534 vs. BL EUR4543) and tended to be lower compared to WL-TURB in the first two quarters of FU. After one year (3rd FU quarter), costs equalized. Considering total FU, mean costs of BL-TURB were significantly lower compared to WL-TURB (WL EUR7073 vs BL EUR6431; p = 0.045).
