The neuro-physiological response to stress has far-reaching implications for learning and memory processes. Here, we examined whether and how the stress-induced release of cortisol, following the socially-evaluated cold pressor test, influenced the acquisition of preferences in an evaluative conditioning (EC) procedure. We found that when the stressor preceded the evaluation phase, cortisol responders showed decreased evaluative conditioning effects. By contrast, impairing effects of a stressor-induced cortisol release before encoding were not found. Moreover, explicit memory was not found to be affected by the stressor or its timing. Implications of the timing-dependent effects of stress-induced cortisol release on EC and the relation between stress and associative memory are discussed. INTRODUCTION According to previous studies noise causes prolonged latencies and decreased amplitudes in acoustic change evoked cortical responses. Particularly for a consonant-vowel stimulus, speech shaped noise leads to more pronounced changes on onset evoked response than acoustic change evoked response. Reasoning that this may be related to the spectral characteristics of the stimuli and the noise, in the current study a vowel-vowel stimulus (/ui/) was presented in white noise during cortical response recordings. The hypothesis is that the effect of noise will be higher on acoustic change N1 compared to onset N1 due to the masking effects on formant transitions. METHODS Onset and acoustic change evoked auditory cortical N1-P2 responses were obtained from 21 young adults with normal hearing while presenting 1000 ms /ui/ stimuli in quiet and in white noise at +10 dB and 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). RESULTS In the quiet and +10 dB SNR conditions, the N1-P2 responses to both onset and change were present.cies compared to quiet. Same effect on onsets were only observed at 0 dB SNR, where acoustic change N1 was not observed. In the quiet condition, latencies and amplitudes of onsets and changes were not different. Whereas at 10 dB SNR, acoustic change N1 latencies were higher, amplitudes were lower than onset N1. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS The effect of noise was found to be higher on acoustic change evoked N1 response compared to onset N1. This may be related to the spectral characteristics of the utilized noise and the stimuli, possible differences in acoustic features of sound onsets and acoustic changes, or to the possible differences in the mechanisms for detecting acoustic changes and sound onsets. In order to investigate the possible reasons for more pronounced effect of noise on acoustic changes, future work with different vowel-vowel transitions in different noise types is suggested. Granzyme B is known to be a serine protease contained in granules of cytotoxic T cells. We have previously reported an influence of granzyme B expression in T regulatory cells (Tregs) on the risk of acute graft versus host disease (GVHD) onset. However, it is still unknown if conventional T cells (Tcon) use the granzyme B pathway as a mechanism of alloimmunity. We hypothesized that granzyme B in Tcon may affect recurrence within the first 6 months after allogeneic transplantation (allo-HSCT). A total of 65 patients with different hematological malignancies were included in this study. Blood samples were collected on day +30 after allo-HSCT. The percentage of granzyme B positive conventional T cells in patients who developed relapse in the first 6 months after allo-HSCT was 11.3 (4.5-35.3) compared to the others in continuous complete remission-1.3 (3.65-9.7), р = 0.011. The risk of relapse after allo-HSCT was in 3.9 times higher in patients with an increased percentage of granzyme B positive conventional T cells. The findings demonstrated that the percentage of granzyme B positive conventional T cells on day +30 after allo-HSCT could be a predictable marker of relapse within the first 6 months after allo-HSCT. V.BACKGROUND The liver and renal capsule are the most common site for experimental pancreatic islet transplantation, but it is not optimal. Gastric submucosa space may be an ideal site for islet transplantation; however, whether pro-inflammation factors mediated islet dysfunction could be avoided or alleviated is still unclear. METHODS Islets of Sprague Dawley (SD) rat were transplanted into the streptozotocin-induced diabetic SD rats. Transplantation sites included gastric submucosa (GS), intraportal vein (PV) and kidney capsule (KC), and the efficiency of glycemic control and site-specific differences of islet grafts were compared. RESULTS With limited number of islets (800 IEQ) transplanted, improvement of recipient glycometabolism was superior in the GS group. When transplanted with 1200 IEQ islets, the survival of islet grafts were significantly prolonged in the GS group (25.87 ± 4.08 days, compared to 15.97 ± 0.83 days and 17.33 ± 1.41 days in PV and KC groups, respectively, P less then .05). Compared with the PV group, the levels of IL-1β and TNF-α were significantly depressed in GS group after 12 h transplantation (15.5 ± 0.70 pg/mL and 13.28 ± 2.80 pg/mL vs. 262.26 ± 53.37 pg/mL and 138.51 ± 39.58 pg/mL, P less then .05). CONCLUSIONS Gastric submucosal would be a potential ideal site for islet transplantation in rat. Gastric submucosal might alleviate the early islet dysfunction triggered by the IL-1β and TNF-α, and which requires a low number of transplanted islets and have a good glycemic control in return. V.OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the survival and success of glass fiber posts compared to cast metal posts in teeth without ferrule. MATERIAL AND METHODS An equivalency, prospective, double-blind (patient and outcome evaluator) randomized controlled trial (RCT) with parallel groups was designed to compare the clinical performance of cast metal and glass fiber posts cemented in endodontically treated teeth without ferrule (NCT01461239). Teeth were randomly allocated to the glass fiber or cast-metal post groups. All teeth were restored with single metal-ceramic crowns. Kaplan-Meier analysis with the log-rank test was used to test the success and survival between glass fiber and cast metal posts considering a cut-off value of P = 0.05. The annual failure rates were calculated considering the survival data for all restorations and separated by type of post after five years. RESULTS A hundred and nineteen patients and 183 posts (72 cast metal posts and 111 glass fiber posts) were analyzed. Angiogenesis inhibitor The median follow-up was 62 months (IQR 37-81).
