There is an urgent need for inexpensive, population-wide surveillance testing for COVID-19. We tested newborn dried blood spot (DBS) anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies for all infants born at Yale from March to May 2020, and found that newborn DBS serologies reflect maternal and population-wide infection rates during the study period. This suggests a role for DBS in COVID-19 surveillance in areas where viral testing is limited.We report a case of an 8-year-old Korean girl diagnosed with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome with Q fever coinfection after playing with a dog and being bitten by a tick in a suburb in South Korea. The clinical findings and treatment were summarized. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the youngest patient reported to have been diagnosed with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome and Q fever from South Korea.Bed flow decisions should be based on current information about capacity. The purpose of this project was to develop a real-time, enterprise-wide, capacity management dashboard. The dashboard successfully used information from the electronic medical record to create a comprehensive standardized data source, which was used to drive patient flow decisions optimizing bed space, allocating resources and maintaining safety.
To investigate if there is a relationship between the use of a patient discharge hospitality center (DHC) and hospital readmissions.

Hospital discharge lounges or DHCs have been developed to improve patient throughput. No studies have been conducted to determine if a discharge location influences hospital readmission.

Data were extracted for adults discharged to home or self-care. Patients were stratified by discharge/last department and admitting/discharge service lines. Readmission rates between groups in the stratified data were compared. DHC and control patients were matched on gender, marital status, age at admission, type, discharging/last department before the DHC, discharging service line, and readmission risk category.

There was no significant difference in the readmission rate of the control group (9.74%) compared with the DHC group (9.93%), χ1 (n = 3204) = 0.031, P = .86.

The study aims to describe factors associated and injuries sustained with inpatients who fell while hospitalized and identify the impact of a revised fall-prevention bundle.

Approximately 1 million falls occur in hospitals annually, accounting for approximately 70% of inpatient accidents. Inpatient falls can result in physical injury, increased patient mortality and morbidity, decreased quality of life, and increased length of stay and cost.

We used a retrospective review of patient fall data for adult inpatients who fell while hospitalized.

After reeducation and implementation of all elements of a revised fall-prevention bundle, there were fewer falls per patient day. We identified additional characteristics indicating when patients were more likely to be injured in a fall.

Healthcare personnel working in the emergency department (ED) is at risk of acquiring severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-Cov-2). So far, it is unknown if the reported variety in infection rates among healthcare personnel is related to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) or other factors.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between PPE use and SARS-CoV-2 infections among ED personnel in the Netherlands.

A nationwide survey, consisting of 42 questions about PPE-usage, ED layout - and workflow and SARS-CoV-2 infection rates of permanent ED staff, was sent to members of the Dutch Society of Emergency Physicians. Members were asked to fill out one survey on behalf of the ED of their hospital. The association between PPE use and the infection rate was investigated using univariable and multivariable regression analyses, adjusting for potential confounders.

Primary outcome was the incidence of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections among permanent ED staff between 1 March and 15 May 2020.
