In ectoparasites we found DNA of Rickettsia parkeri and Rickettsia asembonensis in ticks and DNA of Bartonella clarridgeiae, Bartonella sp. and R. asembonensis in fleas. Our results highlight the evidences of vectors and vector-borne agents in wild animals, and their potential wide distribution in the Pampa biome and the southernmost portion of the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil.This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP1)-resistant Enterobacter spp. bacteremia. The medical records of 111 patients with Enterobacter spp. bacteremia divided into a TZP-susceptible group (minimum inhibitory concentrations [MICs2] ≤16 μg/mL) and TZP-resistant group (MICs >16 μg/mL) were retrospectively reviewed. The male-to-female ratio, age, underlying disease, and infection site did not differ between the 2 groups. Multivariate analysis revealed that the independent predictor associated with TZP-resistant Enterobacter spp. bacteremia was the previous usage of third-generation cephalosporins (P = 0.036). In conclusion, TZP administration in cases of suspected Enterobacter spp. bacteremia previously treated with third-generation cephalosporin should be cautiously considered.The learning process of ball juggling is characterized by considerable individual differences in acquired coordination patterns. Previous research has shown that the coordination patterns observed in novice jugglers can be roughly divided into two classes the high ratio pattern, in which the ball is held for a relatively long time, and the low ratio pattern, in which the ball is held for a relatively short time. To account for these differences in coordination patterns, we examined the anchoring strategies employed by novice jugglers for controlling the juggling movements. Analyses of the correlation between coordination patterns and selected spatiotemporal variabilities revealed that the coordination patterns with a high dwell ratio had lower temporal variability than patterns with a low dwell ratio, which in turn had lower variability of spatial variables than patterns with a high dwell ratio. These findings indicate that individual differences in the coordination patterns adopted by novice jugglers, and hence their learning paths, result from differences in the control strategies employed.Recent findings challenge the prior notion that the cerebellum remains unaffected by Alzheimer's disease (AD). Yet, it is unclear whether AD exacerbates age-related cerebellar grey matter decline or engages distinct structural and functional territories. We performed a meta-analysis of cerebellar grey matter loss in normal ageing and AD. We mapped voxels with structural decline onto established brain networks, functional parcellations, and along gradients that govern the functional organisation of the cerebellum. buy MLN4924 Importantly, these gradients track continuous changes in cerebellar specialisation providing a more nuanced measure of the functional profile of regions vulnerable to ageing and AD. Gradient 1 progresses from motor to cognitive territories; Gradient 2 isolates attentional processing; Gradient 3 captures lateralisation differences in cognitive functions. We identified bilateral and right-lateralised posterior cerebellar atrophy in ageing and AD, respectively. Age- and AD-related structural decline only showed partial spatial overlap in right lobule VI/Crus I. Despite the seemingly distinct patterns of AD- and age-related atrophy, the functional profiles of these regions were similar. Both participate in the same macroscale networks (default mode, frontoparietal, attention), support executive functions and language processing, and did not exhibit a difference in relative positions along Gradients 1 or 2. However, Gradient 3 values were significantly different in ageing vs. AD, suggesting that the roles of left and right atrophied cerebellar regions exhibit subtle functional differences despite their membership in similar macroscale networks. These findings provide an unprecedented characterisation of structural and functional differences and similarities in cerebellar grey matter loss between normal ageing and AD.
Lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) volume is reduced after optic neuritis (ON) in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). We aimed at a longitudinal assessment of LGN volume in NMOSD.
Twenty-nine patients with aquaporin 4-IgG seropositive NMOSD (age 47.8±14.6years (y), female n=27, history of ON (NMO-ON) n=17, median time since ON 3[1.2-12.1]y) and 18 healthy controls (HC; age 39.3±15.8y; female n=13) were included. Median follow-up was 4.1[1.1-4.7]y for patients and 1.7[0.9-3.2]y for HC. LGN volume was measured using a multi-atlas-based approach of automated segmentation on 3 Tesla magnetic resonance images. Retinal optical coherence tomography and probabilistic tractography of the optic radiations (OR) were also performed.
At baseline, NMO-ON patients had lower LGN volumes (395.4±48.9mm
) than patients without ON (NMO-NON 450.7±55.6mm
; p=0.049) and HC (444.5±61.5mm
, p=0.025). LGN volume was associated with retinal neuroaxonal loss and microstructural OR damage. Longitudinally, there was no change in LGN volumes in the absence of ON, neither in all patients (B=-0.6, SE=1.4, p=0.670), nor in NMO-ON (B=-0.8, SE=1.6, p=0.617) and NMO-NON (B=1.7, SE=3.5, p=0.650). However, in four patients with new ON during follow-up, LGN volume was reduced at last visit (median time since ON 2.6 [1.8-3.9]y) compared to the measurement before ON (352±52.7 vs. 371.1±55.9mm
; t=-3.6, p=0.036).
Although LGN volume is reduced after ON in NMOSD, this volume loss is not progressive over longer follow-up or independent of ON. Thus, our findings -at least in this relatively small cohort- do not support occult neurodegeneration of the afferent visual pathway in NMOSD.

Case-control emotion processing studies indicate that altered amygdala and striatum function may underlie SAD; however, links between these regions and symptomatology have yet to be established. Therefore, in the current study, 80 individuals diagnosed with SAD completed a validated emotion processing task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Anatomy-based regions of interest were amygdala, caudate, putamen, and nucleus accumbens. Neural activity in response to angry > happy faces and fearful > happy faces in these regions were submitted to multiple linear regression analysis with bootstrapping. Additionally, multiple linear regression analysis was performed to explore clinical features of SAD. Results showed greater putamen activity and less amygdala activity in response to angry > happy faces were related to greater social anxiety severity. In the model consisting of caudate and amygdala activity in response to angry > happy faces, results were marginally related to social anxiety severity and the pattern of activity was similar to the regression model comprising putamen and amygdala.
