The Theory of Evolution
The theory of evolution is based on the idea that certain traits are passed on more frequently than others. These traits allow for a greater chance to survive and reproduce for individuals, and their numbers tend to rise over time.

Evolution is an inevitable process

This results in an "struggle for existence" in which the ones with the most beneficial traits win, and others are eliminated. The remaining offspring transmit the genes responsible for these beneficial traits to their offspring, which in turn give them an advantage over other members of the same species. As time passes, the organisms that have these traits grow in size.
However, it's difficult to understand how natural selection can generate new characteristics if its main purpose is to eliminate inequities individuals. Furthermore, most forms of natural selection eliminate genetic variation within populations. Natural selection is not likely to create new traits without the involvement of other forces.
Mutation, drift genetic and migration are three major evolutionary forces which change the frequency of genes. Sexual reproduction and the fact each parent transmits half of their genes to each child accelerates these processes. These genes, referred to as alleles can occur at different frequency among individuals belonging to the same species. The frequencies of the alleles that result determine whether the trait will be dominant or recessive.
In the simplest sense the definition of a mutation is an alteration in the structure of a person's DNA code. The mutation causes certain cells to develop, grow and develop into an individual organism while others do not. Mutations can increase the frequency of alleles that already exist or create new ones. The new alleles are transferred to the next generation, and then become dominant phenotypes.
Evolution is dependent on natural selection
Natural selection is an easy process that alters the populations of living organisms over time. It is a result of the interaction between heritable phenotypic variation and the possibility of differential reproduction. These elements create a situation in which individuals with beneficial traits survive and reproduce more frequently than those without them. Sexual selection is another factor that can influence evolution. Some traits are favored because they increase the odds of an individual mating with another. This may result in bizarre phenotypes such as brightly-colored plumage on birds or oversized antlers on deer. These phenotypes aren't necessarily useful to the organism, but they can boost the chances of survival and reproduction.
Many students are also confused about natural evolution due to confusion it with "soft inheritance". While soft inheritance isn't required for evolution, it is often a key element of it. This is because it allows for random modifications of DNA, and the creation new genetic variants which are not immediately beneficial to an organism. These mutations are later used as raw material by natural selection.

Microevolution is triggered by genetic mutation and selection which operate on a smaller scale than macroevolution. It can be increased by other mechanisms such as gene flow and horizontal gene transfer.

It also clarifies that evolutionary theories are well-confirmed and widely accepted, worthy of rational acceptance. The book is less convincing when it comes to the question of whether God is involved in evolution.
