Pavoni's machine standardized the espresso's one-ounce capacity, and he was the first to use pressure to create a thick crema. This was a big step forward for the coffee. He also reduced the temperature of the boiler and used a valve which allowed pressure to increase and decrease at regular intervals. This increased consistency and reduced heat losses.
