For a long time the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so could give the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is only one aspect of how the development paradigm has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. Over many generations these changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with traits that are advantageous can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. As time passes, this difference in reproduction can lead to the emergence of entirely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like increases in muscle mass due to diet or exercise can't be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their fight to remove evolution from textbooks for high school and have also gotten rid of references to the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestral bird's parent.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

Evolution explains how the Earth and all living species evolved. It is also a fundamental part of biology and helps scientists understand how living organisms work and grow. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world and to make useful discoveries including the development of new medicines.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe as well as life on this planet, and it has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over many years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only focuses on physical objects, events and processes.

In fact, many religious people have come up with ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans share an ancestral lineage with other animals.

It is crucial for science educators to support the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few nations around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made progress in some states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses and the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries such as developing new drugs or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve animal and plants species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, whereas others have an intense faith in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. The YECs are the best known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.


OECs are not as well-known however they are as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it requires a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and allows them to change over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the original species were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life can't come from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and permit both creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution in their books. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
