Modulation regarding salt-induced tension effect in Gladiolus grandiflorus L. through exogenous use of salicylic acid.
Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a severe cutaneous adverse reaction characterized by a morbilliform cutaneous eruption, fever, lymphadenopathy, and multiorgan involvement. Alopecia universalis is a variant of alopecia areata characterized by complete loss of hair on the entire body. Herein, we report a case of alopecia universalis that presented after DRESS.The objective of the present study was to investigate the morphometrical features of the cat cerebellum using design-based stereology. Cerebellar hemispheres from four male cats were examined. Isotropic, uniform random sections were obtained and processed for light microscopy. Cerebellar total volume (V), white (WM) and grey matter (GM) volume fractions, and the volumes of the molecular and granular layers were measured using the Cavalieri's estimator and the point counting system. Cerebellar surface area was estimated using test lines, and Purkinje cellular and nuclear volumes were analysed using the nucleator technique. The volume of the cat cerebellar hemispheres was 2.06 ± 0.29 cm3 . The relative volume fractions of the GM and WM were 70.6 ± 2.6% and 29.3 ± 2.6%, respectively. The surface area of the cerebellar hemisphere was 68.2 ± 17.8 cm2 . The volumes of the molecular and granular layers were estimated at 0.89 ± 0.16 cm3 and 0.56 ± 0.1 cm3 , respectively. The Purkinje cell volumes were found to be ranging from 1,717 to 28,489 µm3 , of which cells with a perikaryon volume of 6,994 µm3 had a higher incidence. The Purkinje nuclear volume was estimated at 440-3,561 µm3 , and nuclei with a volume of 1,252 µm3 were the most frequently occurring ones. Our data might contribute to the veterinary comparative neuroanatomy knowledge, help develop experimental studies in this field, and possibly lead to advancement in the diagnosis and treatment of nervous diseases in the cat.Aim Although it is suggested that an appendectomy has a positive effect on the disease course in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), recent studies indicate a potential increased risk of colectomy and colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to evaluate colectomy and CRC rate after appendectomy in UC patients using a nationwide prospective database (ICC PSI-IBD database). Method All UC patients were retrieved from the ICC PSI-IBD database between Jan 2007 and May 2018. Primary outcomes were colectomy and CRC. Outcomes were compared in patients with and without appendectomy, with a separate analysis for timing of appendectomy (before or after UC diagnosis). Results In total, 826 UC patients (54.7% female, median age 46 years (range 18-89)) were included. Sixty-three (7.6%) patients previously underwent an appendectomy 24 (38.1%) before and 33 (52.4%) after diagnosing UC. In multivariate analysis, appendectomy after UC diagnosis was associated with a significantly lower colectomy rate compared to no appendectomy (HR 0.16, 95% CI 0.04-0.66; P=0.011), and the same non-significant trend was seen in patients with an appendectomy before UC diagnosis (HR 0.35, 95% CI 0.08-1.41; P=0.138). Appendectomy was associated with delayed colectomy, particularly when performed after diagnosing UC (P=0.009). No significant differences were found in CRC rate between patients with and without appendectomy (1.6% versus 1.2%; P=0.555). Conclusions Appendectomy in established UC is associated with an 84% decreased colectomy risk and a delay in surgery. Since the colon is in situ longer, the risk of developing CRC remains, which underscores the importance of endoscopic surveillance programs.Missed nursing care and physical restraint have been identified as indicators of patient safety, but no studies to date have explored their relationship. To explore the relationship between these two phenomena a secondary analysis of a longitudinal study on 1,464 in-hospital patients and 314 nurses was performed. The use of physical restraint was assessed at the bedside on a daily basis; missed care was assessed with the MISSCARE survey. Individual, nursing care, and hospital level variables were measured. A total of 184 (12.6%) patients were restrained for 20.33% of their in-hospital stay. No significant differences emerged in the occurrence of missed care between restrained and unrestrained patients. However, some common antecedents of these two phenomena emerged in units where there is a lack of personnel, both an increase in missed care and physical restraints duration should be expected. As a consequence, patients are threatened in their right to receive the required care and they are at risk of being restrained. Moreover, a higher skill mix is a preventive factor, which suggests that the increased numbers of RNs on the team, may prevent routine forms of PR use by analysing the PR in place critically and removing them as soon as possible, thus reducing the duration of the restraints. All rights reserved.Erythrocyte lysing buffer (ELB) facilitates the search for spermatozoa by eliminating erythrocytes in testicular suspension used during the ICSI procedure. This study investigates the effects of ELB on sperm quality parameters, sperm chromatin and sperm DNA fragmentation. Normal ejaculations were used as the model for testicular spermatozoa in this study. After swim-up, the sperm pellets were divided into two parts. Part I, the control (Group A), was diluted with culture media; and Part II, the intervention group (Group B), was diluted with ELB for 10 min. After centrifugation in both groups, the sperm pellets were re-suspended with culture media. The samples were immediately evaluated (A0 and B0) and then evaluated again after 1 hr (A1 and B1). The results indicated ELB decreased the progressive motility (81.60 ± 8.69 vs. LY450139 ic50 64.69 ± 19.08) and viability (97.62 ± 3.02 vs. 85.91 ± 11.46), in Group A and B, respectively, both immediately and 1 hr after preparation. Also, ELB engendered a significant increase in the DNA fragmentation index both immediately (9.68 ± 3.55 vs. 14.38 ± 6.52) and after 1 hr (10.37 ± 5.03 vs. 19.38 ± 6.39). In conclusion, ELB may damage sperm cells, shown by a decreased motility and viability, and it increased DNA fragmentation. Therefore, the use of ELB in testicular semen handling should be discouraged.
