Testicular torsion (TT) is an emergency requiring a prompt diagnosis and surgery to avoid irreversible changes and a complete loss of testis. The present study aimed to identify potential factors that may be predict a testicular salvage after TT in pediatric patients.

Consecutive medical records of all children ≤16years old with surgically confirmed TT over a period of five years (2011-2016) were collected. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to testicular viability and the type of treatment Orchidectomy and orchidopexy. The differences between the two groups and potential predictors of testicular salvage were analyzed.

Thirty-one boys with TT met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. The mean age was 13.6years (range, 10days - 15.8years). Testicular salvage was possible in 18 (58.1%) patients. The duration of symptoms and a lesser degree of torsion indicated a testicular salvage in children and adolescents with testicular torsion, but in multivariate analysis only duration of symptoms (time to surgical detorsion) was significantly associated with the risk of non-salvage. At follow-up, testicular atrophy affected 73.3% of the patients treated with orchidopexy.

Bed bugs are hematophagous insects that can be problematic in some urban emergency departments. The objective was to determine if red blood cell (RBC) and coagulation indices of bed bug-infested emergency department (ED) patients differed from those of noninfested control patients.

A chart review from a single health system was performed for ED patients between February 1, 2011, and February 1, 2017. Bed bug-infested patients were matched to noninfested control patients on the basis of age, sex, and the presenting ED. Variables were analyzed with the t-test and Pearson χ
test and were modeled with multivariable logistic regression.

The study had 332 bed bug-infested patients and 4952 controls. Infested patients had lower hemoglobin (11.7g/dL vs 12.8g/dL), hematocrit (35.0% vs 37.9%), RBC counts (4.1×10
/L vs 4.4×10
/L), mean corpuscular volume (86.0 vs 87.5fL/cell), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations (33.2 vs 33.7g/dL) and higher RBC distribution width-coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) (15.2% vs 14.2%) than noninfested patients (all P≤.003). Infested patients were more likely to be anemic (59.5% vs 36.9%) and to have severe anemia (4.4% vs 0.7%) (P<.001 for both). Blood transfusions were more common in those with bed bugs (5.1%) than those without bed bugs (2.3%) (P<.001).

Despite near equal representation of women in medical schools since 2008, the percentage of women in surgical subspecialties has remained low. Hand surgery accounts for one of the highest percentages of women, at 19%. Ascension to leadership positions has not yet been fully studied among this group. Our study examined whether increased female representation translated to representation at different levels within the organization.

The 2014 to 2018 membership rosters were obtained from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and compared by gender. Leadership and volunteer committee positions were evaluated as published in the annual ASSH Committee Reference Book.
