Diesel exhaust particulates (DEP) adversely affect the respiratory system and exacerbate lung diseases, resulting in high mortality rates. However, its pathogenesis is complicated, and the mechanisms involved are incompletely understood. We investigated the effects of DEP pre-exposure on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) and identified the roles of interleukin (IL)-17 in mice. Mice were divided into vehicle control, DEP, LPS, and DEP pre-exposed and LPS-instilled groups. Pre-exposure to DEP enhanced the number of total cells, neutrophils, and lymphocytes in the BAL fluid of LPS-instilled mice. Pre-exposure to DEP synergistically exacerbated pulmonary acute lung inflammation and granulomatous inflammation/pulmonary fibrosis, concomitant with the enhanced expression of inflammatory cytokines in the BAL fluid and of collagen I and TGF-β1 in the lungs of LPS-instilled mice. The number of TGF-β1-positive cells in the DEP pre-exposed and LPS-instilled group was higher than that in the LPS group. The expression of NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome components was markedly increased in the DEP pre-exposed and LPS-instilled group. IL-17 levels in the BAL fluid and IL-17-positive cells in the lungs were significantly increased by pre-exposure to DEP in the LPS-induced group compared to that in the DEP or LPS group. These results suggest that DEP predominantly contributes to fibrotic lung disease in LPS-related acute lung injury by upregulating IL-17 cytokine-mediated collagen I and TGF-β1 and, at least in part, by activating LPS-induced NLRP3 inflammasome signaling. The study should be useful in devising better strategies for prevention and management of ALI.Closed-cell expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam is commonly used in car bumpers for the purpose of absorbing energy impacts. read more Characterization of the foam's mechanical properties at varying strain rates is essential for selecting the proper material used as a protective structure in dynamic loading application. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of loading strain rate, material density, and microstructure on compressive strength and energy absorption capacity for closed-cell polymeric foams. We performed quasi-static compressive strength tests with strain rates in the range of 0.2 to 25 mm/s, using a hydraulically controlled material testing system (MTS) for different foam densities in the range 20 g/dm3 to 220 g/dm3. The above tests were carried out as numerical simulation using ABAQUS software. The verification of the properties was carried out on the basis of experimental tests and simulations performed using the finite element method. The method of modelling the structure of the tested sample has an impact on the stress values. Experimental tests were performed for various loads and at various initial temperatures of the tested sample. We found that increasing both the strain rate of loading and foam density raised the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity. Increasing the ambient and tested sample temperature caused a decrease in compressive strength and energy absorption capacity. For the same foam density, differences in foam microstructures were causing differences in strength and energy absorption capacity when testing at the same loading strain rate. To sum up, tuning the microstructure of foams could be used to acquire desired global materials properties. Precise material description extends the possibility of using EPP foams in various applications. This paper focuses on the possibility of adapting the centrifugal slip casting method to obtain zirconia-alumina composite materials in the form of finished tube-shaped products. These types of products, due to their unique properties, can be utilised, for example, in the transport of aggressive substances, even in extreme temperatures or corrosive conditions. The study reports on the two series of zirconia-alumina composites differing in the content of ZrO2-2.5 and 25 vol%. The fabricated and sintered materials were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and stereological analysis. Moreover, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was provided in accordance with the requirements of the ISO 14044 and EN 15805 standards. The obtained data clearly show that the centrifugal slip casting method allows obtaining samples with high density and extremely uniform distribution of the ZrO2 phase in the alumina matrix. The stereological analysis results proved also that the addition of ZrO2 is effective in reducing the growth of Al2O3 grains during the sintering process. The phase analysis carried out by means of XRD showed that during the sintering process, in the case of composites with a lower ZrO2 content (2.5 vol%), the monoclinic to tetragonal transformation of ZrO2 was total, while for samples containing 25 vol% ZrO2, the monoclinic phase remained in a small amount in the final product. We examined the associations of dietary fiber and its source with cardiovascular risk factors in Korean adults. This cross-sectional study involved 16,792 adults from the 2013-2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Dietary data were obtained using a 24 h recall method and used to evaluate intakes of total dietary fiber and its source and fruit consumption. Cardiovascular risk factors included obesity, abdominal obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the associations of dietary fiber and its source with cardiovascular risk factors by sex. Total fiber and fruit fiber intake in men were inversely associated with metabolic syndrome (Q5 vs. Q1 odds ratios (OR) = 0.69, 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 0.53-0.92 for total fiber; Q4 vs. Q1 OR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.61-0.93 for fruit fiber). Among women, a higher intake of fruit fiber was related to a reduced prevalence of obesity (Q4 vs. Q1 OR = 0.85, p trend = 0.029) and abdominal obesity (Q4 vs. Q1 OR = 0.82, p trend = 0.026). Total fruit and whole fruit consumption was inversely associated with obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic syndrome in men and hypertension in women. The amount and sources of fiber are associated with metabolic diseases in Korean adults and should be considered in the context of overall dietary quality.
