What Evolution Korea Experts Would Like You To Learn
Evolution Korea

Up until recently the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can result in changes to genes or entire genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with advantageous traits are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. In time, this disparity in reproduction may lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species evolve into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living creatures develop traits that increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. Over time, this genetic variability can result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. Such a variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important to Humanity?

Evolution explains how Earth and all its living species came to be. It is one of the fundamentals of biology and helps scientists understand how living things work and grow. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world and to make useful discoveries including the development of new treatments.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain as much about the universe and the life on this planet. It has been thoroughly examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, support the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology isn't in conflict with religious beliefs as it only addresses physical objects, events, and processes.

Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. For instance, some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans have an ancestry with other animals.

It is crucial for science educators to stand up for the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support vary. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions that can lead to the development of new treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, and still others have a deep religious belief in God and seek to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists typically fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are the best known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created just recently.

에볼루션 게이밍 Evolution KR may be less known However, their beliefs are just as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible, because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. In the end the evolutionary changes create new species that are similar to the original ones.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the original species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.

In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would eliminate references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering talks on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
