On May 18th, 1863, General Ulysses H. Grant took 70,000 union soldiers and loaded them into transport ships.
In the middle of the night, the ships went down the mississippi, right past the biggest guns in the confederate fort.
Because of the surprise, most of the soldiers made it out unscathed.
The ships continued down the river, out of firing range of the fort.
From there, they could cross the water and attack vicksburg from the south, the only place it was unarmed.
The confederates, with only 29,000 soldiers inside, couldn't do much to defend the town.
Grant quickly had his troops encircle the whole town.
Expecting a long siege, his troops dug 15 miles of trenches around the whole fort.
