Smartphone usage is increasing around the globe-in daily life and as a research device in behavioral science. Smartphones offer the possibility to gather longitudinal data at little cost to researchers and participants. They provide the option to verify self-report data with data from sensors built into most smartphones. How accurate this sensor data is when gathered via different smartphone devices, e.g., in a typical experience sampling framework, has not been investigated systematically. With the present study, we investigated the accuracy of orientation data about the spatial position of smartphones via a newly invented measurement device, the RollPitcher. Objective status of pitch (vertical orientation) and roll (horizontal orientation) of the smartphone was compared to data gathered from the sensors via web browsers and native apps. Bayesian ANOVAs confirmed that the deviations in pitch and roll differed between smartphone models, with mean inaccuracies per device of up to 2.1° and 6.6°, respectively. The inaccuracies for measurements of roll were higher than for pitch, d = .28, p less then .001. Our results confirm the presence of heterogeneities when gathering orientation data from different smartphone devices. In most cases, measurement via a web browser was identical to measurement via a native app, but this was not true for all smartphone devices. As a solution to lack of sensor accuracy, we recommend the development and implementation of a coherent research framework and also discuss the implications of the heterogeneities in orientation data for different research designs.Consistency reflects the mapping between spelling and sound. That is, a word is feedforward consistent if its pronunciation matches that of similarly spelled words, and feedback consistent if its spelling matches that of similar pronounced words. For a quasi-regular language such as English, the study of consistency effects on lexical processing has been limited by the lack of readily accessible norms. In order to improve current methodological resources, feedforward (spelling-to-sound) and feedback (sound-to-spelling) consistency measures for 37,677 English words were computed. The consistency measures developed here are operationalized at the composite level for multisyllabic words, and at different sub-syllabic segments (onset, nucleus, coda, oncleus, and rime) for both monosyllabic and multisyllabic words. These measures constitute the largest database of English consistency norms to be developed, and will be a valuable resource for researchers to explore the effects of consistency on lexical processes, such as word recognition and spelling. A939572 The norms are available as supplementary material with this paper. The expansion of cancer therapeutics has paved the way for improved cancer-related outcomes. Cardiotoxicity from cancer therapy occurs in a small but significant subset of patients, is often poorly understood, and contributes to adverse outcomes at all stages of cancer treatment. Given the often-idiopathic occurrence of cardiotoxicity, novel strategies are needed for risk-stratification and early identification of cancer patients experiencing cardiotoxicity. Clinical and research tools extending from imaging to blood-based biomarkers and pluripotent stem cells are being explored as methods to study the cardiovascular impact of various cancer treatments. Here we provide an overview of tools currently available for evaluation of cardiotoxicity and highlight novel techniques in development aimed at understanding underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms.Manganese (Mn) is an essential element required for many biological processes and systems in the human body. Mn intoxication increases brain glutamate (Glu) levels causing neuronal damage. Recent studies have reported that ephrin-A3 regulates this glutamate transporter. However, none has explored the role of this crucial molecule in Mn-induced excitotoxicity. The present study investigated whether ephrin-A3/GLAST-GLT-1/Glu signaling pathway participates in Mn-induced excitotoxicity using astrocytes and Kunming mice. The mechanisms were explored using fluoxetine (ephrin-A3 inhibitor) and riluzole (a Glu release inhibitor). Firstly, we demonstrated that Mn exposure (500 μM or 50 mg/kg MnCl2) significantly increased Mn, ephrin-A3, and Glu levels, and inhibited Na+-K+ ATPase activity, as well as mRNA and protein levels of GLAST and GLT-1. Secondly, we found that astrocytes and mice pretreated with fluoxetine (100 μM or 15 mg/kg) and riluzole (100 μM or 32 μmol/kg) prior to Mn exposure had lower ephrin-A3 and Glu levels, but higher Na+-K+ ATPase activity, expression levels of GLAST and GLT-1 than those exposed to 500 μM or 50 mg/kg MnCl2. Moreover, the morphology of cells and the histomorphology of mice striatum were injured. Results showed that pretreatment with fluoxetine and riluzole attenuated the Mn-induced motor dysfunctions. Together, these results suggest that the ephrin-A3/GLAST-GLT-1/Glu signaling pathway participates in Mn-induced excitotoxicity, and fluoxetine and riluzole can mitigate the Mn-induced excitotoxicity in mice brain. Background In the West, piecemeal endoscopic resection remains the primary treatment for large colon polyps (LCP), as most recurrences are believed to be benign and resectable with follow-up endoscopy. However, invasive malignancy at the site of prior piecemeal endoscopic mucosal resection has been reported in the Asian literature. This study aims to identify the incidence of and the risk factors for local recurrence with malignancy after endoscopic resection of LCP with high-grade dysplasia (HGD). Methods In this retrospective cohort study, we identified patients undergoing complete endoscopic resection of LCPs (≥ 20 mm) with HGD at the Cleveland Clinic between January 2000 and December 2016. Demographic, endoscopic, and pathologic data were collected. All subsequent endoscopic and pathology reports were reviewed to identify recurrence. The cumulative incidence of malignancy at the polypectomy site was determined and univariate analysis was performed to assess risk factors. Results A total of 254 LCPs with HGD were resected in 229 patients.
