Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn-3 PUFA) are essential nutrients and may be capable of delaying age-related cognitive decline. However, previous studies indicate that Australians are not meeting recommendations for LCn-3 PUFA intake. The current study therefore examined LCn-3 PUFA intake in an older Australia sample, as well as associations between LCn-3 PUFA intake and cognitive function.

Cross-sectional data were collected from 90 adults aged 50 to 80 years. LCn-3 PUFA intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and red blood cell fatty acid profiles were used to calculate the Omega-3 Index (RBC n-3 index). Cognitive function was measured using Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III.

Positive associations were observed between age and RBC n-3 index (b=0.06, 95% CI 0.01 - 0.10, P=0.01), and age and LCn-3 PUFA intake from fish oil capsules (b=17.5, 95% CI 2.4 - 32.5 mg/day, P=0.02). When adjusting for LCn-3 PUFA from fish oil capsules, the association between age and RBC n-3 index was no longer significant. No associations were observed between LCn-3 PUFA intake and cognitive function.

LCn-3 PUFA and fish oil consumption increased with age in this sample of older Australians, particularly due to supplement intake. However, LCn-3 PUFA intake was not associated with cognitive function.

Human blood plasma is a complex that communicates with most parts of the body and reflects the changes in the state of an organism. Identifying age-related biomarkers can help predict and monitor age-related physiological decline and diseases and identify new treatments for diseases.

In this study, TMT-LC-MS/MS was utilized to screen differentially expressed plasma proteins in 118 healthy adults of different ages. Participants were divided into three groups 21-30 years of age (Young), 41-50 years of age (Middle) and ≥60 years of age (Old).

The number of differentially expressed proteins in the comparisons of Young vs Middle, Middle vs Old and Young vs Old were 82, 22 and 99, respectively. These proteins were involved in numerous physiological processes, such as "negative regulation of smooth muscle cell proliferation" and "blood coagulation". Moreover, when Young was compared with Middle or Old, "complement and coagulation cascades" was the top enriched pathway by KEGG pathway enrichment analysis. Functional phenotyping of the proteome demonstrated that the plasma proteomic profiles of young adults were strikingly dissimilar to those of the middle-aged or older adults.

The results of this study mapped the variation in the expression of plasma proteins and provided information about possible biomarkers/treatments for different age-related functional disorders.

Many people experience orthopaedic problems (OPPs), such as knee joint pain, hip joint pain, low back pain, and knee stiffness in their lifetimes. OPPs can impair lower extremity function, cause depression, and worsen quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between sedentary time (SDT) and OPPs.

Retrospective cross-sectional study.

This study used data from the 2014-2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Survey participants with previous or current osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, as diagnosed by a doctor, were excluded. OPPs were defined as knee joint pain, hip joint pain, low back pain, and knee stiffness. The cut-off value for SDT was 7.5 hours/day. The study population comprised 3,671 people (1,856 men and 1,815 women), all of whom were ≥50 years-old. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed.

A total of 328 men (17.7%) and 519 women (28.6%) had OPPs. Men with SDTs ≥7.5 hours had a greater risk of OPPs than did men with SDTs <7.5 hours (odds ratio [OR], 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-1.93). A pink-collar job, physical inactivity during leisure time, and passive (e.g. riding in a car or train) versus active (e.g. walking or riding a bicycle) transportation predicted OPPs in men with SDTs ≥7.5 hours. SDT was a risk factor for knee joint pain in men (OR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.11-2.92) and hip joint pain in women (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.35-3.11).

In men, prolonged SDT is a risk factor for OPPs. More physical activity programmes should be launched at the community level for people ≥50 years-old to reduce the occurrence of OPPs.

The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) is new criteria for diagnosing malnutrition that need validation adjusted to race. Our aim is to determine the optimal reference values of calf circumference (CC), investigate the prevalence of GLIM-defined malnutrition based on different screening tools in inpatients over 70 years old in China and assess its relationship with clinical outcomes.

We designed two continuity studies by analyzing a prospective multicenter database. First, we estimated and validated the CC cut-off values by receiver operating characteristic analyses against in-hospital mortality. Then the patients who were at risk by NRS 2002, MNA-SF and MUST were assessed by the GLIM criteria using the new CC values. Some clinical parameters and outcome data were evaluated.

The optimal cut-off values of CC were 29.6 cm for male patients and 27.5 cm for female patients. Selleckchem ISM001-055 The prevalence of GLIM-defined malnutrition was 27.5% by using NRS2002, 32.6% by using MNA-SF and 25.4% by using MUST.ith MNA-SF seems to be the first choice to diagnose malnutrition.
Vitamin D is the one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide, and insufficiency or deficiency can be associated with musculoskeletal and non-skeletal conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus.

Recent data suggests that Vitamin D is relatively safe and toxicity is rarer than previously indicated. However, international guidelines regarding dosage and target plasma levels are conflicting. Moreover multiple well-designed studies of healthy older adults, unselected in terms of Vitamin D status, have revealed largely negative results (with the possible exception of older patients in care homes/hospitals) in terms of improvement in musculoskeletal and non-skeletal conditions to date.

On that basis, it is suggested that future trials regarding Vitamin D supplementation should be carried out in high-risk groups. The use of published criteria for evaluating the effect of nutrients and targeting of individuals with Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency for inclusion in such studies is also proposed.
