The Raman tensor of the dominant A1 modes of the nonlinear optical crystalline material potassium dihydrogen phosphate and its 70% deuterated analog have been ascertained. Challenges in determining the A1 mode tensor element values based on previous reports have been resolved using a specially designed experimental setup that makes use of spherical crystal samples. This novel experimental design enabled the determination of measurement artifacts, including polarization rotation of the pump and/or scattered light propagating through the sample and the contribution of additional overlapping phonon modes, which have hindered previous efforts. Results confirmed that the polarization tensor is diagonal, and matrix elements were determined with high accuracy. The diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis (TBP) remains challenging. This prospective study evaluated the diagnostic value of Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) and T-SPOT.TB and adenosine deaminase (ADA) for TBP in a high burden setting. A total of 123 HIV-negative patients with suspected TBP were enrolled at a tertiary referral hospital in China. Pericardial fluids were collected and subjected to the three rapid tests, and the results were compared with the final confirmed diagnosis. Of 105 patients in the final analysis, 39 (37.1%) were microbiologically, histopathologically or clinically diagnosed with TBP. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) for Xpert were 66.7%, 98.5%, 96.3%, 83.3%, 44.0, 0.338, and 130.0, respectively, compared to 92.3%, 87.9%, 81.8%, 95.1%, 7.6, 0.088, and 87.0, respectively, for T-SPOT.TB, and 82.1%, 92.4%, 86.5%, 89.7%, 10.8, 0.194, and 55.8, respectively, for ADA (≥ 40 U/L). ROC curve analysis revealed a cut-off point of 48.5 spot-forming cells per million pericardial effusion mononuclear cells for T-SPOT.TB, which had a DOR value of 183.8, while a cut-off point of 41.5 U/L for ADA had a DOR value of 70.9. Xpert (Step 1 rule-in) followed by T-SPOT.TB [cut-off point] (Step 2 rule-out) showed the highest DOR value of 252.0, with only 5.7% (6/105) of patients misdiagnosed. The two-step algorithm consisting of Xpert and T-SPOT.TB could offer rapid and accurate diagnosis of TBP.This work aimed at the chemical and structural characterization of powders obtained from chestnut flower honey (HFCh) and honey with Inca berry (HBlu). Honey powders were obtained by spray drying technique at low temperature (80/50 °C) with dehumidified air. Maltodextrin (DE 15) was used as a covering agent. The isolation and evaluation of phenolic compounds and sugars were done by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were performed to determine the morphology of the studied honey powders. The obtained results showed that the content of simple sugars amounted to 72.4 and 90.2 g × 100 g-1 in HFCh and HBlu, respectively. Glucose was found to be the dominant sugar with a concentration of 41.3 and 51.6 g × 100 g-1 in HFCh and HBlu, respectively. 3-Phenyllactic acid and ferulic acid were most frequently found in HFCh powder, whereas m-coumaric acid, benzoic acid, and cinnamic acid were the most common in HBlu powder. The largest changes in the FTIR spectra occurred in the following range of wavenumbers 3335, 1640, and below 930 cm-1. The X-ray diffraction profiles revealed wide peaks, suggesting that both honey powders are amorphous and are characterized by a short-range order only. The insect olfactory system operates as a well-choreographed ensemble of molecules which functions to selectively translate volatile chemical messages present in the environment into neuronal impulses that guide insect behaviour. Of these molecules, binding proteins are believed to transport hydrophobic odorant molecules across the aqueous lymph present in antennal sensilla to receptors present in olfactory sensory neurons. Though the exact mechanism through which these proteins operate is still under investigation, these carriers clearly play a critical role in determining what an insect can smell. Binding proteins that transport important sex pheromones are colloquially named pheromone binding proteins (PBPs). Here, we have produced a functional recombinant PBP from the horticultural pest, Epiphyas postvittana (EposPBP3), and experimentally solved its apo-structure through X-ray crystallography to a resolution of 2.60 Å. Structural comparisons with related lepidopteran PBPs further allowed us to propose models for the binding of pheromone components to EposPBP3. The data presented here represent the first structure of an olfactory-related protein from the tortricid family of moths, whose members cause billions of dollars in losses to agricultural producers each year. Knowledge of the structure of these important proteins will allow for subsequent studies in which novel, olfactory molecule-specific insecticides can be developed. We present a convenient way to obtain an optical power limiting behavior in a quantum dot molecule system, induced by an interdot tunneling. Also, the effect of system parameters on the limiting performance is investigated; interestingly, the tunneling rate can affect the limiting performance of the system so that the threshold of the limiting behavior can be a function of the input voltage, allowing the optimization of the limiting action. Furthermore, by investigating the absorption of the probe field, it is demonstrated that the optical limiting is due to a reverse saturable absorption mechanism; indeed, analytical results show that this mechanism is based on a cross-Kerr optical nonlinearity induced by the tunneling. Additionally, the limiting properties of the system are studied by using a Z-scan technique.Neoadjuvant systemic treatment is increasingly being integrated in the standard treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients to improve oncological outcomes. Current available imaging techniques remain unreliable in assessing response to therapies, as they cannot distinguish between (vital) tumor tissue and therapy induced fibrosis (TIF). Consequently, resections with tumor positive margins and subsequent early post-operative recurrences occur and patients eligible for potential radical resection could be missed. read more To optimize patient selection and monitor results of neoadjuvant treatment, PDAC-specific diagnostic and intraoperative molecular imaging methods are required. This study aims to evaluate molecular imaging targets for PDAC after neoadjuvant FOLFIRINOX treatment. Expression of integrin αvβ6, carcinoembryonic antigen cell adhesion molecule 5 (CEACAM5), mesothelin, prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor, fibroblast activating receptor, integrin α5 subunit and epidermal growth factor receptor was evaluated using immunohistochemistry.
