Mental Health Services on the NHS
The NHS has responded to the rising number of mental health issues by offering services. This includes:
The Long Term Plan reaffirmed its commitment to increase investment in mental health services faster than overall NHS budget. This will include the work of a specialist in suicide prevention.
Get assistance
One of four people will be affected by mental illness at one time in their lives. The good news is that there are many avenues to seek assistance, and the majority of us will be able to recover over time. It's important to understand what assistance is available and who can offer it.
You can seek assistance from a variety places like your GP (primary medical doctor who treats patients), your local health center or a community mental health team. These teams consist of occupational therapists, nurses, psychotherapists and speech and language therapists who collaborate with those who utilize the service. Based on the kind of help you require, you may be offered individual or group therapy.
You will be asked to fill out a form by your doctor so that they can refer you to a mental health professional in the community. They will also ask what you require in terms of support. Then, you will be viewed by someone from a mental health team, which could include a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. In some instances the assessment and treatment will be carried out by a nurse specialist. If you are experiencing crisis, call the NHS 111 helpline for urgent assistance. If you're already being assisted by mental health services it's a good idea to contact your regular team first, unless it's outside of core hours, the weekend or a bank holiday.
The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health detailed plans to establish multidisciplinary, community-based mental health teams that are connected to primary care networks. These teams will increase the quality of the mental health services provided to those in crisis, and provide support to those within their communities and at home instead of in hospitals.
The plan aims to make crisis services more accessible by decreasing wait times and opening up more beds. It would also introduce mental health transport vehicles, and ensure that all ambulances have a mental health liaison nurse in their control rooms to ensure that people who are having an illness of mental health are helped in times of crisis.
Treatment options
The NHS provides a variety of treatment options for mental health conditions. Disorders that are less severe are usually treated by GPs however more severe conditions require a specialist team. These teams operate across both community and primary mental health services, as well as the psychiatric hospitals. You can also seek help in a secure space if you feel in crisis.
Talking therapies are one of the most commonly used forms of treatment for anxiety and depression. Previously referred to as IAPT, these programs have seen referrals increase every year since they were introduced in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan has committed to expanding these services to 1.9 million people by 2023/2024.
Psychiatric drugs are a different part of treatment. They can alleviate symptoms by changing the way chemicals work in your brain. They can also help reduce the effects of other treatments. Your doctor will recommend a medicine that is right for you.
A variety of talk therapy treatments are available which include group therapy as well as individual therapy. Some of these therapies are offered in person, while other can be performed remotely. Some patients prefer face-to face treatment, but it's a matter of choice. There are also a lot of charities that offer support groups and courses like Mind. Their website contains a wealth of reliable information, but you must be aware of the fact that there's plenty of inaccurate or misleading information on the internet about mental health issues.
While the NHS is working to improve its mental health care however, it is still struggling to keep up with demand. In the UK, there are 54 mental trusts. They receive the majority of funding for their services from clinical commissioning group. They typically are located in a specific region however, they are also able to be contracted to provide national services.
The lack of resources is a major issue. There are also concerns over the quality of care, and there is a shortage of psychiatrists and nurses. The NHS is trying to improve these services by offering more training and introducing new methods of working. great post to read provides safer and more effective ways to help people in crisis. This includes mobile crisis teams, as well as safe space.
Supporting you
Since the NHS was launched 70 years ago, there are positive changes for people suffering from mental health issues. Treatment options have increased and social barriers are being broken down. But there is still more to do.
People who are suffering from mental health issues require the ability to access the assistance they require quickly and easily. This is why the NHS is putting in the effort to improve the quality of services for those who require them. In 2020/21, we will ensure that all acute hospitals have a mental health liaison service, both in A&E and on inpatient wards, and that 70% of them will be in compliance with the core 24 standard by 2023/24. We will then strive for 100% coverage.
We will also increase services for people who require them in the community, including therapy for talking, which will give thousands of more people with common or severe mental health issues the help they need. We will continue to work on the national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) program to ensure that more people can be treated by trained therapists quicker.
The NHS provides free, confidential helplines to anyone struggling with mental health issues. These include the Samaritans, Mind and Rethink. These helplines are run entirely by volunteers who offer a safe place to talk or provide advice and information about how to handle your mental health concerns.
There are also a number local organizations that provide assistance and support to those who suffer from mental health issues. They can provide self-help guides, coping strategies and activities to try. Many of these organisations provide support groups in person for those who prefer it.
For students, there is the University's Open Door Team which offers a drop-in counselling service for those feeling low or stressed. There is also the Nightline student counselling service, which provides confidential listening and support from skilled volunteers, or information on other services. Charities like Mind and Rethink can provide an abundance of information and assistance, both online and in local groups. They can also offer various classes and activities, from mindfulness to art classes, which may be useful for people who suffer from mental health issues.
Referrals
Mental health services are under strain and GPs are forced to make difficult decisions about which specialist services to refer their patients to. The doctor will take into consideration the patient's medical background and refer them to services they believe will be able aid. They can refer a patient to an NHS trust, or an independent provider.
A mental health specialist will then review the referral and decide whether it's appropriate or not. If the specialist isn't satisfied with the referral, they'll contact the GP to discuss their decision and explain the reason. They can also ask the GP for more information or to change the referral.
The referral to a local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) can be made through the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). The system allows doctors and other healthcare professionals to refer patients to either a preliminary clinical assessment for mental health or directly to an appointment. However, not all CMHTs offer both options and the system isn't able to be used for every kind of mental health referral.
A GP may also refer patients to a community mental health specialist service (CMT). They are typically run by a large local healthcare organization or hospital. CMTs are a great option for people who wish to consult with a seasoned psychologist or psychiatrist, but don't need inpatient treatment. They also provide an early intervention service where a psychiatrist works with a psychotherapist to assist a person overcome any crisis or improve the quality of their life.
One of the biggest challenges faced by CMTs CMT is how to ensure that all referrals are allocated within an appropriate time frame. One of the problems is that a lot of referrals are considered urgent, even though they might not be. This can cause people who aren't in crisis to be overwhelmed and suffer delays.
To tackle this issue, a few CMHTs have tried to establish more uniform guidelines for what constitutes a referral urgent. This has been accomplished through the use of the standardised referral forma that requires the referrer to consider whether the case is urgent. The form has a checkbox for the referrer to check when they believe the referral is urgent.
