Four new alumino-/galloborates RbMT3 (BO3 )2 O3 (M=Ba, Sr; T=Al, Ga) have been synthesized for the first time by using a high-temperature solution method. All the title compounds have Sr2 Be2 B2 O7 -like structures, in which the [BO3 ] triangles and [TO4 ] tetrahedra form the final double-layered configurations with the M- and Rb-site atoms located between and in the double layer, respectively. The structure evolution from Sr2 Be2 B2 O7 to RbMT3 (BO3 )2 O3 series is discussed. The broader energy bandgaps in Al-based borates when compared with Ga-based ones can be entirely attributed to the location of Al/Ga s orbitals near the Fermi surface. Both experimental and computational approaches were used to study their structure-property relationships.
Some dogs with chronic otitis externa (OE) develop proliferation of the tissues surrounding the opening of the external ear canal, resulting in obstruction. Traditionally total ear canal ablation with bulla osteotomy (TECABO) has been recommended.

To evaluate the efficacy of a novel treatment using carbon dioxide (CO
) laser surgery and to describe the histopathological features of chronic proliferative and obstructive OE.

Twenty-six dogs were included, 16 with bilateral and 10 with unilateral disease (42 ears were treated). Dogs with nonpatent horizontal ear canal or macroscopic calcification of the ear canal were excluded. For histopathological evaluation, tissue samples were collected from 11 dogs (17 ears).

Hyperplastic tissue around the canal opening and within the vertical ear canal was dissected and ablated using a CO
laser. Biopsy samples were evaluated for sebaceous and ceruminous gland hyperplasia, epidermal hyperplasia, inflammation and fibrosis.

Following CO
laser surgery there wasg obstruction of the ear canal opening and vertical canal, and should be considered as an alternative to TECABO whenever possible.A catalogue of metal-organic gels are synthesized from phytic acid (PA) and a diversity of metal ions (Fe3+ , Cr3+ , Al3+ , Ce3+ , Y3+ , Co2+ , Ni2+ , Mn2+ , Cu2+ , Zn2+ , Mg2+ ) upon heating at 80 °C. PA-M gels have various morphologies, including irregular granular (PA-Fe, PA-Al, PA-Ce, PA-Cr, PA-Ni, PA-Co), spongy (PA-Y), and hollow tremella-like (PA-Cu) morphologies. Interestingly for PA-Fe-1  4 (PAFe3+ =1  4) a large amount of gas is generated during the gelation process leading to a self-foaming gel. The PA-Fe-1  4 self-foaming gel shows reversible gel-sol phase transition. The gel is unusually weakened and transformed into a sol at room temperature, and the sol is reversed to gelation when heated again at 80 °C. PA-Fe-1  4 gel also shows shapeable and load-bearing properties, and it can bear up to 200 times of its weight, depending on the gas amount fixed in the foam gel and the aging time. This work provides a catalogue of self-foaming supramolecular gels with tunable properties based on naturally abundant resources.

Prospective study. In lean cats, food availability was stepwise increased during the first week and given ad libitum for a total of 40 weeks to increase their body weight. From week 41 to week 60, food access was limited to reach a weight loss of 1% to 2% each week. Measurement of IGF-1 was performed at week 0, 16, 40, and 60. Insulin-like growth factor-1 was measured by radioimmunoassay. Body weight and IGF-1 were compared among the 4 time points.

Body weight increased by 44% from week 0 (4.5 ± 0.4 kg) to week 40 (6.5 ± 1.2 kg) (P < .001) and decreased by 25% from week 40 to week 60 (4.9 ± 0.7 kg) (P < .001). Serum IGF-1 concentrations did not differ during the study period (week 0, 16, 40, 60 500 ± 188, 479 ± 247, 470 ± 184, 435 ± 154 ng/mL, respectively; P = .38). Correlations with body weight were not observed.

In the case of six fluorido ligands, [MnF6 ]3- anions with two longer and four shorter Mn-F bonds making elongated octahedra are usually observed. Herein, we report the synthesis of the compound K3 [MnF6 ] through a high-temperature approach and its crystallization by a high-pressure/high-temperature route. The main structural motifs are two quasi-isolated, octahedron-like [MnF6 ]3- anions of quite different nature compared to that met in ideal octahedral MnIII Jahn-Teller systems. Owing to the internal electric field of Ci symmetry dominated by the next-neighbour K+ ions acting on the MnIII sites, both sites, the pseudo-rhombic (site 1) and the pseudo-tetragonally elongated (site 2) [MnF6 ]3- anions are present in K3 [MnF6 ]. The compound was characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, and magnetometry as well as by FTIR, Raman, and ligand field spectroscopy. A theoretical interpretation of the electronic structure and molecular geometry of the two Mn sites in the lattice is given by using a vibronic coupling model with parameters adjusted from multireference ab-initio cluster calculations.
Mixed-mode reversed-phase/anion exchange liquid chromatography is useful for separations of mixtures containing anions (e.g. this website ionized acids). However, when using this form of liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection, the bleed of amine-containing hydrolysis products from the columns may cause ion suppression or enhancement.

Using electrospray ionization tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry detection, we determined the ion suppression or enhancement caused by column bleed for three mixed-mode reversed-phase/weak anion-exchange columns containing stationary phases that differ in chemical structure. Two of the stationary phases are based on silica particles, while the third uses ethylene-bridged hybrid organic/inorganic particles, which have improved hydrolytic stability. Mixtures of acidic and basic analytes were combined with the chromatography flow postcolumn, both with and without a column, and their mass spectrometry ion signal responses (peak areas) were determined. The ratio of signal response with and without a column is the matrix factor.
