Molecular markers are one of the major factors affecting genomic prediction accuracy and the cost of genomic selection (GS). Previous studies have indicated that the use of quantitative trait loci (QTL) as markers in GS significantly increases prediction accuracy compared with genome-wide random single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. To optimize the selection of QTL markers in GS, a set of 260 lines from bi-parental populations with 17,277 genome-wide SNPs were used to evaluate the prediction accuracy for seed yield (YLD), days to maturity (DTM), iodine value (IOD), protein (PRO), oil (OIL), linoleic acid (LIO), and linolenic acid (LIN) contents. These seven traits were phenotyped over four years at two locations. Identification of quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) for the seven traits was performed using three types of statistical models for genome-wide association study two SNP-based single-locus (SS), seven SNP-based multi-locus (SM), and one haplotype-block-based multi-locus (BM) models. The id and demonstrated that the combined use of single and multi-locus models can effectively identify a comprehensive set of QTL that improve prediction accuracy, but further studies on detection and removal of redundant or false-positive QTL to maximize prediction accuracy and minimize the number of QTL markers in GS are warranted. In an attempt to reduce the negative consequences of adolescent media use, parents often monitor their children's online activities. However, research suggests that parental monitoring often does not reduce children's problematic mobile phone use as expected. Based on the results of a survey of 584 Chinese adolescents, we found that parental monitoring positively predicted children's problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) within a Chinese cultural context. The results also showed that children's escape motivation partially mediated this relationship, while their level of shyness moderated both the mediated path and the direct impact of parental monitoring on children's PMPU. read more The findings suggested that a higher level of shyness increased the likelihood that parental monitoring would increase the child's escape motivation and PMPU. The study results provide guidelines for parents and educators regarding interventions for adolescents' problematic phone use. With the rapid accumulation of population and industry, the urban service efficiency requirements in building sustainable and smart cities are increasingly becoming higher. However, current environmental assessment methods require large amounts of data, long assessment cycles, and tedious assessment processes; thus, they cannot quickly respond to the rapidly changing urban green space. To resolve the above problems, we present a multidimensional model for sustainable and smart cities equipped with RE-3DSG sensors to detect the real experience of residents and the three-dimensional structure of the urban green space. RE-3DSG sensors consist of two parts The net ecosystem service (Net ES) and green volume ratio (GVR), where Net ES provides a solution consisting of runoff control, air purification, cooling, carbon sequestration, noise reduction, and recreational area establishment, while GVR assesses the spatial structure of urban built environment plant clusters. By implementing the proposed model, it is proven that it can assist users (usually decision makers in government departments) to improve the decision-making efficiency and increase the satisfaction of residents with urban green spaces, thereby achieving the goal of building a sustainable and smart city. The naturally occurring anthraquinone emodin is found in many plants that have been part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Recent pharmacological studies suggest that emodin might be a valuable therapeutic option for the treatment of various diseases. We describe the antioxidant effects of emodin on the superoxide radical. Our techniques include X-ray crystallography, density functional theory (DFT), and a recently developed cyclovoltammetry improvement, the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) method. X-ray results show offset π-π stacking of emodin units in the crystal, and this type of interaction is supported by the DFT, which indicates one superoxide interacting via π-π stacking with the quinone moiety, by transferring one electron to the ring, and inducing some quinone aromatization. The second superoxide seems to form a stable complex after interacting with the H(hydroxyl) in position 3 of emodin. We show that one molecule of emodin sequesters two molecules of superoxide one forming a complex with H(hydroxyl) in position 3, and the other due to π-π oxidation of superoxide and emodin ring reduction. We conclude that emodin is a very strong antioxidant. Color variation in the voltaic cell was observed during the RRDE study. This was analyzed and explained using a mini-grid gold electrode for UV-Vis spectroscopy in the voltaic cell.Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) vaccines have substantially reduced the burden of invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPDs) worldwide. Despite high coverage with S. pneumoniae vaccination, upper-respiratory-tract colonization by S. pneumoniae is still common. We assessed maintenance of serological responses to S. pneumoniae serotypes included in PCV-10 by ELISA in HIV-1-infected children (n = 50) and age-matched controls (n = 50) in Ethiopia. We isolated S. pneumoniae in nasopharyngeal swabs and determined S. pneumoniae serotype by whole genome sequencing (WGS). Comparable levels of S. pneumoniae serotype-specific IgG concentrations were detected in plasma of HIV-1-infected children and matched controls, with geometric mean concentrations (GMCs) consistently higher than the protective threshold for PCV-10 serotypes of 0.35 μg/mL. We isolated S. pneumoniae from 38 (out of 97) nasopharyngeal swabs, 25 from HIV-1-infected children and 13 from controls. WGS based serotyping revealed 22 known S. pneumoniae serotypes and 2 nontypeable (NT) isolates. Non-PCV-10 serotypes represented >90% of isolates. We showed that HIV-1-infected children and matched controls in Ethiopia carry a level of maintained serological memory to PCV-10 considered protective for IPDs. We identified a higher proportion of nasopharyngeal carriage with highly pathogenic S. pneumoniae non-PCV strains among HIV-1-infected children compared to controls.
