OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of a music intervention upon anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate in adult patients with potentially malignant oral disorders. METHODS Eighty consecutive adults (mean age 68.3 years) consulting a Unit of Oral Medicine (Murcia Spain) were randomized to a study group (n = 40) that listened to music through headphones during 10 minutes or to a control group (n = 40). Corah's dental anxiety score, blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation (oximetry), skin temperature, and salivation were recorded at different timepoints before and after patient consultation. RESULTS Significant pre- versus post-consultation reductions were observed in blood pressure (p 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The applied music intervention had no apparent effect upon anxiety. Further studies using different music intervention strategies and/or analytic parameters are needed to explore the benefits of this approach to decreasing anxiety.Electro-hydrodynamic processing, comprising electrospinning and electrospraying techniques, is a novel technology used in the production of nano- and sub-micro-scale materials with specific properties suitable for environmental remediation processes. Polycaprolactone (PCL) micro-fibrous mats and alginate microcapsules were produced using electrospinning and electrospraying techniques respectively, and Lysinibacillus sphaericus CBAM5, a bacterium capable of metal removal by adsorption and accumulation inside the cell, was immobilized in these matrices. The polymeric structure was able to protect and maintain cell viability and the bio-composite materials were used to capture gold from synthetic water samples. The micro-fibrous membranes with immobilized bacteria were able to remove 93% of the gold after 120 h of inclusion in the aqueous medium. Using a filtration system, an efficiency of 64% was obtained for the removal of the precious metal after 10 cycles of filtration (2 h of exposure to the gold solution). In contrast, the microencapsulated L. sphaericus CBAM5 captured 64% of the gold after 4 h of the assay. Thus, both micro-structured matrices were suitable for the immobilization and protection of L. sphaericus CBAM5 and they showed high efficiencies of gold biosorption. Hence, these bio-composite materials could be used to concentrate gold from industrial wastewaters.Metal particles and ions released from implants not only have a fundamental effect on the longevity of total joint replacements, but can also be disseminated to remote organs. Periprosthetic tissues harvested during revision surgeries mainly reflect end-stage failure but may not adequately reveal initial biological reactions and systemic side effects. Therefore, primary reactions caused by metal particles and ions were investigated in an established murine model. Left knee joints in three groups, each consisting of ten female BALB/c mice, received injections of metal ions (MI), metal particles (MP) and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) (control). Seven days after the injection, immunohistochemical analyses of the synovial layer were performed with respect to some biological markers including Tumor necrosis factor -α (TNF-α), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Cluster of Differentiation 45 (CD45), Cluster of Differentiation 68 (CD68) and Cluster of Differentiation 3(CD3). The MP group showed significantly enhanced proinflammatory cytokine expression (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β) compared with the other groups (p less then 0.05). Interestingly, CD3, as a marker for T lymphocytes, did not increase in any of the groups. The MI group showed a significantly increased expression of CD45 compared with the control group (p less then 0.05). Therefore, during the primary process, metal particles have stronger pro-inflammatory potential than metal ions, and T lymphocytes did not seem to be activated in our murine model. Systemic reactions caused by metal particles and ions were found by observing the untreated right knees.Multiple hot-compression tests were carried out on the 6082 aluminum (Al) alloy using a Gleeble-1500 thermal simulation testing machine. Data on flow stresses of the 6082 Al alloy at deformation temperatures of 623 to 773 K and strain rates from 0.01 to 5 s-1 were attained. Utilizing electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM), the dynamic recrystallization behaviors of the 6082 Al alloy during hot compression in isothermal conditions were explored. Camostat With the test data, a hot-working processing map for the 6082 Al alloy (based on dynamic material modeling (DMM)) was drawn. Using the work-hardening rate, the initial critical strain causing dynamic recrystallization was determined, and an equation for the critical strain was constructed. A dynamic model for the dynamic recrystallization of the 6082 Al alloy was established using analyses and test results from the EBSD. The results showed that the safe processing zone (with a high efficiency of power dissipation) mainly corresponded to a zone with deformation temperatures of 703 to 763 K and strain rates of 0.1 to 0.3 s-1. The alloy was mainly subjected to continuous dynamic recrystallization in the formation of the zone. According to the hot-working processing map and an analysis of the microstructures, it is advised that the following technological parameters be selected for the 6082 Al alloy during hot-forming a range of temperatures between 713 and 753 K and strain rates between 0.1 and 0.2 s-1.During the electric arc furnace steelmaking process, the coherent jet technology was widely used to protect the kinetic energy of the supersonic oxygen jet and achieve better mixing effects. Comparing with the conventional oxygen lance, the coherent lance could increase the surface area of impaction cavity, resulting in a better stirring effect and higher reaction rate. However, there was limited research about the effect of restriction structure for the coherent lance tip on the flow field characteristic of the main oxygen jet. In this research, three kinds of restriction structures have been investigated by numerical simulation and combustion experiment at room and high ambient temperature conditions. Then an optimum restriction structure would be tested in a 75 t electrical arc furnace steelmaking process to verify its metallurgical property.
