The Structured Bed Reactor with Recirculation and Intermittent Aeration (SBRRIA) is a reactor configuration that presents high efficiency of organic matter and nitrogen removal, besides low sludge production. However, operational parameters, as the recirculation rate, aeration time, and airflow, are not fully established. A bench-scale structured bed reactor with intermittent aeration was fed with synthetic effluent simulating the characteristics of sanitary sewage. The reactor was operated for 280 days with an operational hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h. The reactor was operated without effluent recirculation for the first time since this approach was not yet reported, and was named Structured Bed Reactor with Intermittent Aeration (SBRIA). The COD removal was higher than 81% for all operational conditions, and the total nitrogen removal ranged from 10 to 80%. The highest efficiencies were obtained with an aeration time of 1 h 45 min (total cycle of 3 h) and an airflow rate of 4.5 L.min-1. Different nitrification and denitrification behaviours were observed, resulting in nitrification efficiencies over 90% when the reactor was submitted to higher aeration times and denitrification efficiencies above 90% when the reactor was submitted to low aeration times. The airflow ranges tested in this study affected the nitrification and the total nitrogen efficiencies. Even without effluent recirculation, the temporal profile showed that there were no peaks in the concentration of the nitrogen forms in the reactor effluent, saving electrical energy up to 75% due to pumping.This study examined the effects of ischemic preconditioning (IP) on the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) induced injury in normal and hypertrophied hearts. Cardiac hypertrophy in rabbits was induced by L-thyroxine (0.5 mg/kg/day for 16 days). Hearts with or without IP (3 cycles of 5 min ischemia and 10 min reperfusion) were subjected to I/R (60 min ischemia followed by 60 min reperfusion). IP reduced the I/R-induced infarct size from 68% to 24% and 57% to 33% in the normal and hypertrophied hearts, respectively. Leakage of creatine phosphokinase in the perfusate from the hypertrophied hearts due to I/R was markedly less than that form the normal hearts; IP prevented these changes. Although IP augmented the increase in phosphorylated p38-mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK) content due to I/R, this effect was less in the hypertrophied than in the normal heart. We collected real-life data from nine hospitals in Finland and Spain including 1020 FL patients to study the influence of sex on disease outcome. The median follow-up duration was 67 months (range 0-226 months). Female patients showed better progression-free survival (PFS) (hazard ratio [HR], 0.720; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.588-0.881), disease-specific survival (DSS) (HR, 0.653; 95% CI, 0.448-0.951), and overall survival (OS) (HR, 0.653; 95% CI, 0.501-0.853) than male patients. However, there were no significant sex differences in prognosis in patients with early POD. This study strengthens the understanding that male sex is an adverse prognostic factor for FL. An email invitation to complete the survey was sent to the 1842 members of the British Orthodontic Society on 9 June 2020 with a follow-up reminder on 15 July 2020. The invitation contained a brief description and online link to the questionnaire, which was active between 9 June and 9 August 2020. The 15-item questionnaire covered frequency of reading, preferred format, likes and dislikes, and what changes might improve the
. Data were analysed for the membership as a whole using simple descriptive statistics.
In total, 310 individuals completed the questionnaire, representing a response rate of 17% with 74.2% (n = 230) reporting reading at least one article per issue. The most popular way of reading the
