How to Maintain a Frost Free Fridge and Freezer
A frost-free refrigerator and freezer will eliminate the need to defrost manually. This can save you time, effort and electricity when compared to a traditional refrigerator/freezer.
If you notice ice crystals on the package, frozen food can be damaged. These crystals can cause freezer burn and alter the texture of your food.
Defrost
The process of defrosting your freezer isn't glamorous or fun, but it's an essential aspect of fridge and freezer maintenance. Warm air is dragged into the freezer each when you open it, which causes condensation and the formation of ice on interior surfaces. This causes the freezer to lose its ability to regulate temperature, causing it to work overtime and consume more energy. It can also affect the flavor and quality of food, and cause freezer burn.
Defrosting a freezer naturally is the best option however it can take several hours. If you want to speed up the process using a handheld steam cleaner or hairdryer can be used. Be sure to unplug and shut off the freezer before beginning. Take out all frozen food and clean up any water spilled.
Make sure to have towels, or a plastic liner ready before you begin the defrosting procedure. This will catch any water that spills. It's also a good idea to empty your entire freezer so you can reorganize the food items that remain and dispose of expired or old items. Once the defrosting process is completed, be sure to thoroughly clean and dry the freezer prior to turning it on.
To speed up the natural process of defrosting, open and close the door to your freezer several times to let the temperature rise. Take all drawers and shelves off to enable you to access the frozen ice. You can also put some old towels or newspapers that are extremely absorbent on the floor to soak any puddles that form from melting the ice.
When the ice melts keep a heated spoon or plastic spatula in the vicinity to break off any large chunks that may be accumulating on the interior walls. Avoid using sharp objects like forks, knives, or ice picks when trying to break through the ice. This could cause damage and leaks in the freezer. Make sure to clean and rinse shelves and drawers after the ice has been removed. Once everything is clean then plug into the freezer and let it run for the night to return to its normal temperature of freezing.
Clean
A regular clean is the best way to avoid the build-up of spores and odors from food. Discard any produce that is spoiled or beyond its prime. Give a thorough clean-up of all drawers and shelves and wipe them clean with soapy water (I use Seventh Generation natural dish liquid using a damp cloth) then drying them. I also clean the freezer with a clean cloth dipped in a solution of baking soda and water or vinegar and water. Stubborn stains may require scrubbing with a nonscratch brush. I also vacuum the coils at the back of my refrigerator using a nozzle. This will get rid of all the dirt, pet fur and dust that is stuck in hard to reach areas.
You will not need to defrost your fridge with frost as frequently as you do with other models. Frost-free refrigerators come with an automated cooling system that cools the food by moving cold air through the fridge which eliminates the requirement to manually defrost the appliance. It is crucial to clean your refrigerator at least once a week. Throw out any food items that have expired the expiration date, and take out any old bottles, jars and packets of soy sauce.
To make the task of defrosting your freezer easier, remove all the food from the freezer and then put it temporarily into another freezer, a cooler with ice packs or in a box lined with blankets. During this process, protect the floor of your freezer with an old cloth. You can remove any remaining ice once the freezer has been defrosted using a plastic scraper.
If your fridge is equipped with an automatic defrost function, you will see an indicator light that will let you know when it's time to defrost. Empty the freezer and set it on the counter to avoid losing frozen food during defrost. You can then restock it with frozen food that has an extended shelf life. You can then use an old towel to collect any water that drips out of the freezer as it melts.
Maintaining
If the evaporator is covered with frost and it freezes, it will. This can cause the refrigerator to work harder and use more energy. Regular maintenance is crucial. This can be prevented by disconnecting the fridge and cleaning the evaporator.
When the defrost system is functioning properly the frost layer should form on the evaporator in an evenly pattern. If ice is forming on the evaporator, but it is not a problem with defrost, this could be a sign of a malfunctioning thermostat or timer.
In some older models, a return air duct and supply to and from the freezer can get clogged with dirt, pet hair, or food remnants. This causes the compressor to have to work harder and creates a lot of excess heat that will migrate to the refrigerator section cabinet and cause warm temperatures, particularly around the doors of the freezer. Keeping the freezer door gasket free of any damage and ensuring that it is sealed will lessen the chance of this happening.
The frequent openings of the freezer could also allow humid air from the room to enter the appliance. This creates an environment in which ice and frost form more easily. Making sure the freezer is tightly shut can help but it is not the solution to removing all problems with frost and ice.
Clean regularly the evaporator drainage tube to make sure it is not blocked with food debris or ice. A hand-held vacuum hose, or a special refrigerator coil cleaner (typically with brush that can be slipped into hard to reach places) is a good way to do this.
Make sure the freezer is free of any obstructions that can block airflow or the condenser. To remove food residues and prevent odours, clean the interior walls and shelves using a mix of hot dish soap, water or baking powder. Ensure that the air vents between the refrigerator and freezer compartments are not blocked, because this could hinder air circulation and raise humidity levels in the appliance.
Repair
There are several reasons why your frost free fridge freezer may not be working correctly. Most of these issues can be fixed easily however some require expert assistance. The majority of the time, the issue is caused by something that blocks air from moving to and from the freezer section of the unit. This can be caused by over-packed food items or clogged ventilation gaps, and keeping the door open for too long.
Unplug your fridge before performing any repairs or maintenance. This prevents the risk of electric shocks and allows any accumulation of frost to melt naturally.
If the refrigerator is still unable to cool it could be due to an issue with the defrost system. In this type of fridge and freezer, a heater is continuously turned on to melt any frost that has formed on the evaporator coils. fridge freezer sale frost free melted snow drains down a drain pipe into a pan in the back of the refrigerator and then evaporates into ambient air. The timer for defrost could be defective and should be replaced.
It's also possible that a bad seal is blocking cold air from getting into the freezer compartment of your refrigerator. It is easy to fix this by cleaning the seal with warm water and soap. Also, make sure that there aren't any objects that are sat against the wall of the freezer or blocking any vents for the freezer.
You can also replace the freezer gasket if it is damaged or worn. Many major appliance manufacturers provide spare parts, including freezer gaskets. It is important to know that the replacement of the gasket in a freezer should only be done by a qualified professional.
There could be an issue with the evaporator that circulates air in the freezer section of your refrigerator. In this instance you'll likely hear a clicking sound whenever the fan starts to turn on. This is because the ice that covers the evaporator coils has gotten too thick and is pressing on the fan's blades. This requires a professional to be diagnosed and rectified.
