Infection prevention and control precautions help to decrease microbial transmission, and through the appropriate use of antibiotics, Antimicrobial Stewardship programs aim to decrease the prevalence and emergence of Antimicrobial Resistance.
A systematic review was undertaken to critically appraise and synthesise evidence for nurses', children's and parents' knowledge and understanding of antimicrobial stewardship, and of infection prevention and control in acute paediatric care settings. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guided the review. Studies were included if they examined the factors that contributed to nurses' adherence to, or consumers' practice in relation to, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control.
Of the 16,957 papers identified, 50 studies conducted in acute paediatric settings met the eligibility criteria, and were included. Most studies were of low methodological quality. Fourteen studies evaluated nurses' knowledge and self-regarding antibiotic use.Metabolism of β-amyloid is critical for healthy brain. Decreased clearance of β-amyloid is associated with ensued accumulation of amyloid peptide, culminating in formation of senile plaques, a neuropathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease(AD). Apolipoprotein E (APOE), a lipoprotein for phospholipid and cholesterol metabolism, is predominantly synthesized by glia in the central nervous system, controlling Aβ aggregation and metabolism. By use of stereotactic injection and a Morris water maze, we found that delivery of Dicer1-expressing adenovirus into the hippocampus of an animal model of AD mice APPswe/PSEN1deltaE9 significantly improved spatial memory. The effect was associated with reduced amyloid peptides in the hippocampus which were analyzed with immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. With western blot, quantitative real-time PCR, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and northern blot,Dicer1 overexpression increased apolipoprotein E (APOE) and concomitantly decreased B2 RNA in the hippocampus of the AD mice and in astrocyte cultures whereas transfection of B2 Mm2 RNA decreased APOE mRNA and protein levels in astrocyte cultures. Further, human or mouse APOE mRNA was found containing Alu RNA or its equivalent, B2 Mm2 RNA, locating downstream of its 3'-untranslated region (UTR), respectively. The 3'-UTR or 3'-UTR in conjunction with the downstream Alu/B2 RNA were cloned into a luciferase reporter; with dual-luciferase assay, we found that simultaneous transfection of Dicer1 siRNA or Alu/B2 RNA decreased the corresponding luciferase activities which suggest that Alu RNA mediated APOE mRNA degradation. Altogether, Dicer1 expression mediated amyloid peptide clearance by increasing APOE via blocking B2 RNA-mediated APOE mRNA degradation.
Recent shifts in the distribution of Japan's population towards older ages, have meant that the chance of encountering patients with dementia in dental clinics is increasing. Many studies have shown that the brain volume decreases along with the progression of dementia. Although previous studies have reported a relationship between tooth loss or periodontitis and the onset of dementia, the pathological mechanisms underlying this association have not been elucidated. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between the oral condition and brain atrophy and to discuss how to adequately deal with patients with dementia.
This cross-sectional study included 15 participants who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The participants were 60years or older and presented with cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), diagnosed by a neurologist. We obtained information on the oral condition, lifestyle, cognitive function, and brain atrophy. Cogni study demonstrated that the number of present teeth could be an indicator of the progress of dementia. Preserving the teeth as well as the acquisition of a regular exercise habit might be important for preventing progression of dementia. Further research examining a larger study population and analyzing a greater number of factors is warranted. This work aimed to evaluate the ability of Sporothrix species to attach and form biofilm on the surface of cat claws as an ex vivo model. A total of 14 strains (5 Sporothrix brasiliensis, 3 Sporothrix schenckii s. str., 3 Sporothrix globosa and 3 Sporothrix mexicana) were used. The biofilms were incubated for periods of 01, 03, 07, 10 and fifteenth 15 days. Their metabolic activities were evaluated by the XTT reduction assay and the morphology and structure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysis of the SEM images revealed that all the species can form biofilms on cat claws. The metabolic activity in the ex vivo biofilms was similar to that found in in vitro biofilms when incubated for the same period. This is the first report of an ex vivo biofilm model involving cat claws. The ability to form biofilms on cat claws can increase the viable period of the fungus and consequently the number of possibly infected animals and people.Influenza virus is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the major cause of death in influenza virus infected patients. Recent studies indicated that active glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) encoded by glucagon (GCG) gene exerts anti-inflammatory functions. The aim of this study was to determine the potential role of active GLP-1 in H9N2 influenza virus-induced ALI/ARDS in mice. First, we uncovered that GCG mRNA expression levels and GCG precursor protein levels were significantly increased, but total GLP-1 and active GLP-1 levels were decreased in the lungs of H9N2-infected mice. Next, liraglutide, an active GLP-1 analogue, was used to treat infected mice and to observe its effects on H9N2 virus-induced ALI. Liraglutide treatment ameliorated the declined body weight, decreased food intake and mortality observed in infected mice. It also alleviated the severity of lung injury, including lowering lung index, decreasing inflammatory cell infiltration and lowing total protein levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF).
