Growth deficits were witnessed in HIV exposed infants compared to HIV unexposed infants. There is need for early nutritional monitoring and support among HIV exposed infants.

A convenience sample of licensed California FCCH providers (n = 30) attended a 2-hour, in-person group training in English or Spanish on nutrition standards for infants and children aged 1 to 5 years. Provider surveys and researcher observations during meals/snacks were conducted pre- and 3 months post-intervention. Providers rated the training as excellent (average score of 4.9 on a scale of 1-5). Adherence, assessed by survey and observation and compared over time using paired t-tests, increased from an average of 36% pre-intervention to 44% post-intervention (P = .06) of providers (n = 12) for infant standards and from 59% to 68% (P  less then  .001) of providers (n = 30) for child standards. One-third (39%) of providers rated infant standards and 19% of providers rated child standards as difficult to implement. Nutrition standards can be implemented by FCCH providers after an educational intervention; a larger study is warranted with a representative group of providers.Objectives. Survey current experience with Skin to Skin care (SSC) in Pennsylvania Maternity Centers. Study Design. The nursing director of each Maternity Center in PA (n = 95) was sent an on-line confidential survey querying SSC practices. Responses were compared by delivery size, location, and nature of affiliation. Statistics analyzed by chi-square and student t-test. Results. Of these 64/95 MCs (67%) responded. All allowed SSC after vaginal deliveries, 55% after C-section, 73% mother's room. Monitoring included delivery room nurse (94%) with support from other providers (61%), family members (37%), and electronic monitoring (5%). If SSC occurred in mother's room all reported family education on safe practices. 40% were aware of adverse SSC events, including falls and suffocation. About 80% educated staff about infant safety during SSC. Conclusions. Gaps in education and supervision during SSC were identified. Additional education and standardization of best practices are needed to reduce risks from falls and suffocation during SSC.This study explored to what degree economic development and improvement of healthcare are associated with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) mortality. A correlation analysis between LRTI mortality and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, and the Health Access and Quality Index (HAQI), respectively was conducted for 15 countries in East and South-East Asia. The results revealed a dramatic decrease in LRTI mortality in total populations for lower-middle income (LMI) countries but at the same time an increase in upper-middle income (UMI) and high-income (HI) countries. A highly significant (P  less then  .001) growth-dependent relationship between LRTI mortality and economic growth was observed. Improvements in HAQI were significantly associated with a decrease in LRTI mortality in LMI countries, but an increase in UMI and HI countries. The decline of LRTI mortality amongst children in LMI countries is an encouraging trend and efforts against LRTI must be continued, though not at the expense of preparing health systems for the growing burden.Background. Flint Kids Cook, a nutrition and culinary program for children and adolescents, was created in October 2017 to address health concerns among youth and families in a low-income, urban community. In this study, researchers examined family experiences with the 6-week, chef-led program, which was taught in a farmers' market kitchen. Methods. At the conclusion of each session, researchers used an open-ended focus group format to assess program experiences, perceived impact on youth self-efficacy for cooking and healthy eating, and caregiver support. This qualitative study was guided by thematic analysis. Results. Between November 2017 and December 2018, 72 caregivers (n = 38) and students (n = 34) participated in separate focus groups. Caregivers were primarily female (74%) and African American (71%). Most students were African American (76%) and half were female. Recurrent themes included food acceptance, dietary modifications, confidence in the kitchen, and program design. Caregivers and students agreed that location and design of the program alongside facilitation by an experienced chef were important factors for program success. Conclusions. This study demonstrated that a chef-led healthy cooking program for youth was effective in improving perceived food acceptance, dietary habits, and confidence in the kitchen. The program could be modeled in similar communities to address diet and health of children and adolescents. Background Perinatal asphyxia (PA) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in which dramatic transient impairment in liver functions occurs in some patients. Objectives We aimed to evaluate the state of the liver in cases of Perinatal asphyxia and to assess the severity of hepatic impairment in relation to different grades of HIE. Patients and Methods This case-control study was conducted on 100 full-term newborns with perinatal asphyxia (Group I) and 50 healthy neonates served as controls (Group II). All biochemical parameters of liver function were measured on the 1st, 3rd, and 10th day after birth. selleck kinase inhibitor These parameters include serum alanine transferase (ALT), aspartate transferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total protein, serum albumin, serum bilirubin (total and direct), and international normalized ratio (INR), in both cases and controls. Results Among babies with PA, 25 (25%) had an Apgar score of 0 to 3 (severe PA), 43 (43%) had an Apgar score of 4 to 5 (moderate PA) and 32 (32%) had an Apgar score of 6 to 7 (mild PA) at 5 minutes of life.
