Epilepsy is a disease that is stigmatized globally. Several studies have introduced sensitization efforts to reduce stigma towards people with epilepsy (PWE) in various settings. Although sensitization efforts have shown some evidence of improved attitudes towards epilepsy, progress has been limited. This systematized literature review summarizes the existing literature concerning interventions that reduce stigma towards PWE. By conducting an overview of existing interventions, we aimed to consolidate knowledge and outcomes of existing efforts as well as highlight gaps and directions for future interventions.

We searched MEDLINE (via PubMed) and Embase for English-language studies published between January 1, 1970 and November 15, 2017 that focused on stigma reduction strategies for PWE in any global setting. Studies were included if they described a stigma reduction intervention for epilepsy. Studies were excluded if they were reviews, editorials, conference proceedings, abstracts, or did not discuss a sping effective stigma reduction strategies, especially in LMICs, and validating tools to measure their efficacy. This article is part of the Special Issue "The Intersection of Culture, Resources, and Disease Epilepsy Care in Uganda".
Little is known about the importance of an applicant's research productivity in terms of matching into a highly-ranked orthopaedic residency. We characterized the research of orthopaedic residents who matched in 2017 to determine whether 1) program tiers differed by their residents' research; and 2) discrete increases in applicants' research were associated with matching into higher-ranked programs.

We searched Scopus for resident publications accepted before 2017 or published through January 2017. selleck Using an established ranking system, programs were ranked (tier-1, highest; tier-5, lowest) by their department's number of citations from 2005 to 2015. We compared resident research productivity among these 5 tiers. We then categorized residents by discrete levels of research productivity (0, 1, or ≥2 publications) and compared the differences in matched program rank.

Data collection and analysis performed at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a tertiary care center in Baltimore, MD.

We obtained our sample from alloprograms. Having 1 publication was associated with matching into a higher-ranked program but no significant associations were observed beyond the first publication. The NLRP3 inflammasome is a vital part of the innate immune response, whilst its aberrant activation drives the progression of a number of non-communicable diseases. Thus, NLRP3 inflammasome assembly must be tightly controlled at several checkpoints. The priming step of NLRP3 inflammasome activation is associated with increased NLRP3 gene expression, as well as post-translational modifications that control NLRP3 levels and licence the NLRP3 protein for inflammasome assembly. Increasing life expectancy in modern society is accompanied by a growing percentage of elderly individuals. The process of aging is associated with chronic inflammation that drives and/or worsens a range of age related non-communicable conditions. The NLRP3 inflammasome is known to contribute to pathological inflammation in many settings, but the mechanisms that prime NLRP3 for activation throughout aging and related co-morbidities have not been extensively reviewed. Here we dissect the biochemical changes that occur during aging and the pathogenesis of age related diseases and analyse the mechanisms by which they prime the NLRP3 inflammasome, thus exacerbating inflammation.Plants produce structurally diverse specialized metabolites, including bioactive alkaloids and terpenoids, in response to biotic and abiotic environmental stresses. The APETALA2/ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTOR (AP2/ERF) family of transcription factors (TFs) play key roles in regulating biosynthesis of specialized metabolites. Increasing genomic and functional evidence shows that a subset of the ERF genes occurs in clusters on the chromosomes. These jasmonate-responsive ERF TF gene clusters control the biosynthesis of many important metabolites, from natural products, such as nicotine and steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs), to pharmaceuticals, such as artemisinin, vinblastine, and vincristine. Here, we review the function, regulation, and evolution of ERF clusters and highlight recent advances in understanding the distinct roles of clustered ERF genes and their possible application in metabolic engineering. The intestinal epithelium is one of the most rapidly renewing tissues, which is fueled by stem cells at the base of the crypts. Strategies of genetic lineage tracing and organoids, which capture major features of original tissues, are powerful avenues for exploring the biology of intestinal stem cells in vivo and in vitro, respectively. The combination of intestinal organoid-culturing system and genetic modification approaches provides an attractive platform to uncover the mechanism of colorectal cancer and genetic disorders in the human minigut. Here, we will provide a comprehensive overview of studies on intestinal epithelium and intestinal stem cells. We will also review the applications of organoids and genetic markers in intestinal research studies. Furthermore, we will discuss the advantages and drawbacks of organoids as disease models compared with mice models and cell lines.Wright and Bourke's compelling article rightly points out that existing models of embryogenesis fail to explain the mechanisms and functional significance of the dynamic connections among neurons. We pursue their account of Dynamic Logic by appealing to the Markov blanket formalism that underwrites the Free Energy Principle. We submit that this allows one to model embryogenesis as self-organisation in a dynamical system that minimises free-energy. The ensuing formalism may be extended to also explain the autonomous emergence of cognition, specifically in the brain, as a dynamic self-assembling process.
To predict mortality with the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) in a sample of community-dwelling older people, using a follow-up of 7years.

Longitudinal.

479 Dutch community-dwelling people aged 75years or older.

The TFI, a self-report questionnaire, was used to collect data about total, physical, psychological, and social frailty. The municipality of Roosendaal (a town in the Netherlands) provided the mortality dates.

Total, physical, and psychological frailty predicted mortality, with unadjusted hazard ratios of 1.295, 1.168, and 1.194, and areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.664, 0.671, and 0.567, respectively. After adjustment for age and gender, the areas under the curves for total, physical, and psychological frailty were 0.704, 0.702, and 0.652, respectively. Analyses using individual components of the TFI show that difficulty in walking and unexplained weight loss predict mortality.

This study has shown the predictive validity of the TFI for mortality in community-dwelling older people.
