Lower extremity Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) demonstrated relatively more severe intramuscular fat infiltrations in demyelinating type (p.Lys89Glu mutation) patients compared to intermediate type (p.Gly77Arg mutation) patients. The anterolateral and superficial posterior compartment muscles of the distal calf were preferentially affected in demyelinating type patients. Therefore, it seems that the investigated GNB4 mutations do cause not only the known intermediate type but also demyelinating-type neuropathy. We first presented three Korean families with GNB4 mutations and found phenotypic heterogeneities of both intermediate and demyelinating neuropathy. We suggest that those findings are useful for the differential diagnosis of CMT patients with unknown GNB4 variants.A healthy lifestyle is essential for maintaining physical and mental health. Health promotion, with a particular emphasis on regular exercise and a healthy diet, is one of the emerging trends in healthcare. However, the way in which exercise training and nutrients from dietary intake interact with each other to promote additive, synergistic, or antagonistic effects on physiological functions leading to health promotion, and the possible underlying biomolecular mechanisms of such interactions, remain poorly understood. A healthy diet is characterized by a high intake of various bioactive compounds usually found in natural, organic, and fresh foodstuffs. Among these bioactive compounds, astaxanthin (ASX), a red carotenoid pigment especially found in seafood, has been recognized in the scientific literature as a potential nutraceutical due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neurotrophic properties. Therefore, scientists are currently exploring whether this promising nutrient can increase the well-known benefits of exercise on health and disease prevention. Hence, the present review aimed to compile and summarize the current scientific evidence for ASX supplementation in association with exercise regimes, and evaluate the additive or synergistic effects on physiological functions and health when both interventions are combined. The new insights into the combination paradigm of exercise and nutritional supplementation raise awareness of the importance of integrative studies, particularly for future research directions in the field of health and sports nutrition science.Graphene film has wide applications in optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. A novel and facile method was reported for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) film by electron transfer and nascent hydrogen produced between aluminum (Al) film deposited by magnetron sputtering and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution for only 5 min, significantly shorter than by other chemical reduction methods. The thickness of Al film was controlled utilizing a metal detection sensor. The effect of the thickness of Al film and the concentration of HCl solution during the reduction was explored. The optimal thickness of Al film was obtained by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrical conductivity measurement of reduced GO film. Atomic force microscope images could show the continuous film clearly, which resulted from the overlap of GO flakes, the film had a relatively flat surface morphology, and the surface roughness reduced from 7.68 to 3.13 nm after the Al reduction. The film sheet resistance can be obviously reduced, and it reached 9.38 kΩ/sq with a high transmittance of 80% (at 550 nm). The mechanism of the GO film reduction by electron transfer and nascent hydrogen during the procedure was also proposed and analyzed.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy in women. Depending on the diagnostic criteria applied, it occurs in up to 16.6% of the general female population. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia includes a group of autosomal recessive disorders, the most common of which is non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCAH) caused by mutations in the
gene. PCOS and NCAH have similar clinical manifestations (hyperandrogenemia, i.e., hirsutism, acne, alopecia, and increased androgen levels in the blood) and potential impact on long-term health (infertility, increased risk of type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. buy Iclepertin Consequently, it is thought that NCAH mutations in the heterozygous state may play a role in PCOS development and phenotypic expression.
To determine the prevalence of the most common pathogenic alleles of the
gene in adolescents with PCOS and adolescents at risk of PCOS development, and to compare the results with healthy adolescents matched for gynecological age.
Ay adolescents. Future studies of larger cohorts and rarer pathogenic
gene variations are required.
We found no differences in the incidence of NCAH-causing variations in the heterozygous state in adolescent PCOS patients, risk adolescents (with hirsutism but normal menstruation), and healthy adolescents. Future studies of larger cohorts and rarer pathogenic CYP21A2 gene variations are required. The aim of the presented research was to investigate the mechanism of sorption of Cu(II) ions on the commercially available Purolite S 940 and Purolite S 950 chelating ion exchangers with the aminophosphonic functional groups. In order to understand better the sorption mechanism, the beads were cut with an ultramicrotome before and after the Cu(II) ion sorption process. The cut beads were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an EDX detector. The performed linear profiles of the elemental composition allowed us to examine the depth with which the sorbed metal penetrates into. For further investigations concerning the mechanism of the sorption process, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis using the attenuated total reflectance (ATR) technique and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods have been used. The comparison of FTIR and XPS spectra before and after the sorption of Cu(II) ions showed that free electron pairs from nitrogen and oxygen in the aminophosphonic functional groups participate in the process of copper ion sorption. In addition, the microscopic studies suggested that the process of ion exchange between Na(I) ions and sorbed Cu(II) ions takes place on the Purolite S 940 and Purolite S 950. This study concerning the in-depth understanding the of Cu(II) sorption mechanism, using modern analytical tools and research methods could be very useful for its further modifications leading to the improvement of the process efficiency.
